This reminds me of an editorial cartoon I saw on another podcast's thumbnail. It depicted two aliens in a space ship flying over the moon, looking back at Earth as our planet, with multiple explosions coming from it. One alien says to another- " there go those Earthlings again - fighting over which religion is the most peaceful. "

Seth, all the kids in my family had a toxic relationship with our mother. I tried to communicate with my mom but she’d zing me every time. A friend said, “Why do you keep doing this to yourself .” It made me think and asked myself why I keep allowing her to verbally hurt me. So I stopped. Protect yourself and stay away from toxic people, even if it is your mother. Then don’t feel guilty about it. Enjoy the freedom from being abused.

I did this with my mother when I was 21 or so. It was like an INSTANT diet. The weight that came off of me was so relieving. She never liked me. I'm an only child, but my cousin was her favorite. When I finally said "fuck it", I was able to not be stressed when a family gathering was coming up. So much more peace in my soul! Highly recommended!

Somewhere along the line it went from a casual way of occasionally keeping up with acquaintances to 574 pictures of dinner a day.
Tho the good bit of being atheist is everyone hates you. The 575th pic was my own offering of roast baby. And just to make sure the hatred was at maximum saturation, I served it with Oxo instead of a delicate jus infused with rosemary and a soupcon of fresh bat. Oh the calamity! Bet you're not even talking to me now, I'm that plagued.

I am not from US so no-one fecking cares what I think about god or if I believe it or not, including my family. Idk maybe generation before may have had troubles a bit about it - but they are gone now - just to say given the other comment you got. But I actually wanted to simply say to you that just stay strict about what you feel about F-book. I myself have absolutely no interest for any sort of social media. But I had to make some darn account on one of those cause my cousins wedding was being arranged via that damned platform. It annoyed me already then, cause I was even before against the idea of putting my or really anyone's private lives that openly public for any reasons. I don't view it as a smart or very internet-security-conscious a move, period. So when that shit was over I just stopped to care about the page, with the final message saying something along the lines that social media is not my thing, the reasons why not all though strictly speaking even that's not anyone's onion to peel - and pretty much stated that it's nothing personal against any family or friends - but those who actually know me also know how to contact me, and can still do so via other means. Of course there are some who will try to insist on it - but I ignore them and don't feel bad about it, if they didn't bother to read what I left as my last message, even they aren't that interested in what's posted there and alas...
The point being is that you too are in no way obligated to join or return to any a public forum for anyone and yes doing so can turn out or feel a mistake from the beginning. It hinges on weather you want your life for all the world to see, judge and possibly manhandle is up to you, and as you stated... you chose not to want it. Even if you erased something that you publish, there is no way to get it entirely off and away - and that being the nature of anything online, there being a copy or save with likelihood somewhere, even if you never did anything that got anyone's attention (for good or bad) - all that alone is enough to never even use your actual name online, never mind have social media site. So your choice really should be enough. For anyone who cares of you, that IS enough, no further discussions needed to be had.
I chose to explain in the last message, before simply forgetting what I had shortly due that cousins wedding arrangements. Nothing complicated, just, stated that the shit isn't for me and people who actually know me also know how to contact me. But in all truth even having to explain isn't necessarily your responsibility, so what, you don't like being public cause perhaps you don't have it in you to want, even that tiny bit of 'fame' per say, lol, period. It's just laziness of people to have to dig out that phone number from the list or log on some messaging platform that does not have public element to it like Skype.
Come to think, Skype is even cheaper than your phone for all those phone-calls, including when calling international and you get even an image with it (obviously not if calling the electric company, but calling them utterly possible). And other similar things exist, not that I would bother to have multiples of anything, so Skype can do for the example. Hell, you could even use just Discord - which costs nothing - I mean if you did not want / need the ability to call into phone numbers. So yea I option out from even the phone mostly, cause it's cheaper to use computer and I am in reach of it 24/7. But in all it is same here, ABSOLUTELY NO social media for me either. My husband has same take, the nature of it makes his skin crawl - so some folk out here do have same take about it in general, for various reasons. It's not even really good for a person's life to have to be online that openly or to have to - endure the related bs. - to consistently be on react and reachable - to always have to keep in touch with people. Even just that kind of responsibility about it isn't very pleasing a pressure to exist with. For me the reasons were on security, privacy and namely cause I don't like to be in focus of any attention where it's public, I am shy, I guess. But the thing is - you aren't obligated to return unless you want to.

He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
"I never did engage in this kind of thing before

Caught another ban for posting a meme from Family Guy. The one with Bob Ross that said "It'll be our little secret and if you tell anyone I will cut you."
My favorite ban was when I got a 72 hour ban for making a joke on a GWAR post about their GWAR brand alcohol. I said something about how I'd trade a handy for a bottle of their booze. Right up the alley of the crude silliness of GWAR.

One basic reason is - I AM AN ARTIST! I read it periodically and feel regret she never could appreciate my way of life. I am now eighty and have had a great life. Productive, happy and satisfied, at peace. I have no contact with my family. They as well, still don’t get my way of life. Still going strong creating art. Also I gave up religion years ago.

Seth I doubt you will ever see this but the story of you setting boundaries with your mom, I can empathize so much, I too had to draw a line in the sand and declare Job 38:11 “…Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further…” the day she said to me “I wish you were dead than anyone know you are my son, you are an abomination to God and he will strike you dead and anyone who gives you comfort” and to imagine that was her response to me before she ever knew I was an atheist she turns 73 on the next MLK, JR. Day. Next year will be the 12th anniversary of her statement to me that day and not a single word has passed between us since, the last words I told her that day were consider me dead then cause I sure as hell consider you dead to me. It never ceases to amaze me how cruel, hateful and cold the one person who is supposed to love you unconditionally can be. I can only imagine her words if she were confronted with the truth of me being an atheist, I guess that would make me a double abomination, lol. Mine wasn't religious, but she made up for it in other evil ways. For instance, I'm an only child, but her favorite was my cousin. I'm sure she loved me. But she NEVER liked me. She would always be up to spending time with my cousin, but anytime I asked her if she wanted to go do whatever, she always had a sinus headache or cramping or hadn't slept good the night before and was tired. Literally any excuse she could come up with. And the last time I allowed that to affect my mood was when I was 21 years old. In my mind, I divorced her that day and it was like I had INSTANTLY lost 100 lbs! I highly recommend it to anyone with a toxic relationship, be it friend, family member or significant other. Peace will truly enter your soul!
She passed in 2010. I still haven't cried. I guess at this point, I never will.

Another excellent podcast in a long line of excellent podcasts. Long time viewer and atheist here. I value your sane and sensible approach in dealing wit theists, even the more unbalanced ones Always a good idea to leave a person a way out with some dignity rather than forcing them into a corner and then becoming defensive and unmovable. That being said, I was wondering if you had any suggestions in how to movie some of your fellow high profile atheists into following your lead rather than the yelling, screaming, cursing and berating that seems to be getting worse instead of better. Almost as if it is a planned style of interaction for ratings and in appealing to the lowest, most base level of their fan base,. My sense is that they are causing more harm than good. I know that this must be tricky as several of these individuals are your friends...

regarding the youtube/facebook issues, I remember the Hannah and Jake channel going through some of this as they review christian movies. There was a guy who worked for the movie producers they were reviewing that would illegally strike every video they posted. I believe they ended up going to court over it.

No great loss, Seth. I was on Facebook for about a month. Had dozens of "friends". Mostly pretty women who i didnt know, nor ever would. Regardless, despite that fact, i found the content to be so mindnumbingly, boring, stupifying, useless, and insulting that i cancelled it asap. I just cant understand what is the least bit fascinating about it.
