I've read it twice. Once in high school and just now at 39yrs old. The whole section around the picnic at Clara's is so comforting. One of my favorite fictional settings. I like the fact that all the characters have the same human doubts and joys as I do, except they live a much rougher life than I. The sequel and prequels are not as impactful, still worth a read.
Just getting back into reading, and now reading Lonesome Dove for the first time in honor of my dad passing away recently. It called to me and I watched one of your videos saying it was one of your favorites of all time. I’m a Texan who has been to the Rio Grande, and has road tripped up through Yellowstone to Montana. I had no idea what the book was about, and it has sat on my shelf for years (by marriage). Once I picked it up it just made sense. Thank you for your part in bringing these characters into my life.

Just finished!!! Man what a ride!!! I have never wanted to drink whiskey and gamble but I want to now!!!
Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece. It may not be on my top 10 list anymore, but that’s just because I’ve read too many books. But it definitely sticks in my brain to this day.
I reading this right now, mostly because you prompted me to. The dialogue is so powerful, even when they say very little. I find myself so lost in the story that hours have passed and don't want to put it down.
Great review! I read this book when I was 12 on the recommendation of my father and it had a profound impact on me. To this day it is my favourite novel, I read it at least once a year and annoyingly recommend it to anyone I meet who is a reader. If you want to purchase a book from a store and they don't have it, usually they will order it in for you. The best way to go in my opinion, especially if it's an independent book store.
Just wanted to say I enjoy your Instagram immensely and that it's really influential. I read Piranesi because of you and it's now one of my favourite books ever. It gave me the longest book hangover and I even gifted a copy to a complete stranger. That sounds weird but she's a friend of a friend so it wasn't like I just walked up to someone in the street.
Thanks for the rec! I've never heard of it before, but I wanted to read more books from that era. I read Butcher's Crossing this year, and it was fantastic!
really appreciate your fresh- immediately post read take - lots of great allusion and description of the flavor and magic without spoilers - well done, thank you
Never read a western, I’d always be reading thrillers and it’s a nice change .Through your review made me want to read it and I’m glad I started reading lonesome dove and it is sooo gooooooooood !
I just finished this today. I'm usually a fantasy reader and I'm almost positive this was my first Western, but I really loved it. Maybe it's because it's all I read, but I noticed a lot of parallels between Westerns and Fantasy. The whole race war concept, hostile terrains, mysticism, good vs. evil, quests, and the cattle drive sections were very reminiscent of the military fantasy I've read. So yeah, lots of interesting overlaps between the two I hadn't considered. Maybe that's why a lot of the biggest open world video games are either fantasy or westerns. Food for thought! Cheers! Loved the video!
I just got one for 94 Philippine Pesos (less than $2)! I recently heard about it and I saw it in this chain bookstore that sells thrifted books. Your review just got me excited to read it soon. Im glad I found it when I did.
I love that you have fresh eyes on so many things embedded to pop-cultures zeitgeist. Not knowing the episode order of Star Wars movies may offend some, but enders me to your channel. You have no bias in your review!
Just finished this book after I found your tik tok about it. This was an epic book, with an epic story and characters. Like you said, one that will stick with you. Was kind of bummed on some of the open ended-ness of this book but that’s what series are for!
I just discovered your channel. It’s super interesting to hear from someone who is a newcomer to reading. I have been very into reading since I was a kid. Your perspective and thoughts on the books you’ve read is very interesting. I have never read Lonesome Dove but now I absolutely will. really love your channel!
Had the same feelings when I finished as well. Excited and happy to talk about it, but also so bummed that it was over. But like you said, three other books to dive into
I bought this book a little after you did and looking forward into reading it. Also I purchased it cause my grandfather was a fan with western books. ❤
I read this book probably 20 years ago but recently bought a copy in the hopes my husband would dive in to it. He has not (bummer!) but your enthusiasm makes me want to do a re-read myself. I also want to suggest that you ask your local book store to order the books for you. I know it's easier to order them online but if you don't really need them ASAP I think they'll be happy to get them in to the shop for you.
My husband read this book 30byears ago, after the miniseries. I have been reading a ton the last few years and wanted to get him back into reading. I got the audiobook and started playing it on our living room stereo, we are both enjoying it so much, and doing it together.❤
Absolutely loved this book! Read the sequels and prequels after reading. Would love to hear your thoughts on those when you've finished, definitely worth the read for Lonesome Dove fans
I have just started reading The Desert Rose by McMurtry and i'm really loving it so far. I'll probably read the next book in the duology next, and then some time this year I do want to get to The Lonesome Dove. It's been staring at me from my shelves for SOOOO long and i'm tired of it side-eyeing me as i walk by lol
@@booksaresick It was just okay. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. If I had to do it over again, I'd just read a spoiler filled review. I only cared about one character. I have the other two books in the series and I don't think I'll get to those until next year.
First off, I love your videos. I’m 46 and started reading books again. It’s probably been 30 years! So yeah, I’m kinda excited. Just finished Lord of the Flies. Lonesome Dove is now on my to read list. Secondly, I don’t know why but I gotta know what album that is in the background? The vinyl cover with the pink background. :)
I'm like you and never annotate books. But there's one passage I tabbed. I dogeared that book on page 845-846. It's what Clara told Call before he left: "'I'll write him, (Newt)' she said. 'I'll see he gets your name if I have to carry the letter to Montana myself. And I'll tell you another thing: I'm sorry you and Gus McCrae ever met. All you two done was ruin one another, not to mention those close to you. Another reason I didn't marry him was because I didn't want to fight you for him everyday of my life. You men and your promises: they're just excuses to do what you plan to do anyway, which is leave. You think you've always done right -- that's your ugly pride, Mr. Call. But you never did right and it would be a sad woman that needed anything from you. You're a vain coward, for all your fighting. I despised you then, for what you were, and I despise you now, for what you're doing'".
This book was my favorite book of 2023 and of all time. I could not get enough of these characters.

Had been in my “to read list” for years. My Mum read it once upon a time, along with “The Stand”, and had highly recommended them to me forever.
Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece. It may not be on my top 10 list anymore, but that’s just because I’ve read too many books. But it definitely sticks in my brain to this day.
what's your number 1?
YES DUDE. This is my second favorite book of all time. I’m so glad you loved it!!
Gus and Call are probably (maybe) my favorite literary duo ever. Such amazing arches and what a great dynamic between them!
What's your first favourite book? I'm curious.
@@Catherine-gb2qy East of Eden by John Steinbeck! An amazing novel, if you haven’t read it!
@@ianthereader I'll be sure to read it! Thank you 😊
I reading this right now, mostly because you prompted me to. The dialogue is so powerful, even when they say very little. I find myself so lost in the story that hours have passed and don't want to put it down.
Love this book! It's my favorite single book I've read.
I am not a Western girlie, but my goodness I LOVE this book... Whenever someone asks for my top books this is always towards the top of the list.
This book sat on the bookshelf in my childhood home and I never gave it a thought. Because of you I bought it and am starting it 😊

Lonesome Dove is a book that feels underrated no matter how highly rated it is. I loved the prequels and liked the sequel.

This is on my TBR. Sounds like an amazing read. I stopped reading thick books for awhile, so this might be the first one I get back into.
One of my top 5 books of all time
I'm in between books right now and you're making me really want to pick this up. About to enter my cowgirl era.

Have you read Watership Down? The Lonesome Dove of rabbit novels 👀
This is my favorite book. I just finished the sequel Streets of Laredo today.
How'd you like Laredo???
@@booksaresick It was just okay. I'd give it a 3 out of 5. If I had to do it over again, I'd just read a spoiler filled review. I only cared about one character. I have the other two books in the series and I don't think I'll get to those until next year.
I’m loving your book reviews and enjoying the overall content. Slight correction on your pronunciation of Laredo, it’s a Spanish E so (Lu-Ray-Doe) 👍
Super excited for you that you’re reading The Stand by Stephen King. I had covid when I read that….great experience!
Going up on my TBR!
Maybe I will branch out of my usual fantasy genre and give this one a go!

I just finished this one. Read a little before bed every night, so it took a few months…I pictured Arthur Morgan for Gus and John Marston for Call 😂
Now you need to watch the TV mini series with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones.
Is this book like RDR2?? I’m so interested
my grandparents and mom love this story. they really love the old show. …..me??? nope… hahaha 😂
Now that you’re finished with the book will you try to watch the TV. Movie ?
I have this under the tree❤
Fuck me this book is good
Can I start a petition for you to do the audiobook of this one please. ☺️ thank you haha
Request the book from your local bookstore.

Always interesting to hear why people loved this book. I hated it!
