As someone who has been using both side by side I’ve gotta say they are different enough that one isn’t necessarily better than the other. And if I could have only one it would probably be the grandmother. The gma is just so immediate and easy to use-it’s the ultimate go-to analog machine for leads and bass and plucky sounds. The Matriarch feels like more of a machine for wild sonic experimentation.
Two excellent synths. I’ve got a Matriarch on pre-order and am eagerly awaiting it. It’s a winner for sure. The basic sound is so lovely and it’s super flexible.
Yes-I would ALSO love to hear more about good pairings. I have a Matriarch and a Grandmother and am excited to get going with Eurorack pairings with them.
Once again, an excellent review. I own a Grandmother and absolutely love it. You are right to point out that it is a good Eurorack front end, because that is how I use it. Now, thanks to your videos on the Matriarch, I think this would be a great add to my studio, even my live rig.
I have just received Matriarch and already have Grandmother. Right out the gate I know they are going to be used differently. For instance, I enjoy keyboard tracking the modulation on grandmother to get a biting clavichord lead tone that doesn’t sound the same on Matriarch because for some reason, the pitch modulation tracks the root tonic better on the Grandmother. But Matriarch will reveal its secrets to in time. Both excellent instruments.
Fantastic video, thanks so much! I was going to get Matriarch but ended up getting Grandmother instead (with Chase Bliss Mood and Strymon Volante pedals). I'm very happy with that decision - it sounds awesome paired up to a Mother 32. I am still tempted by Matriarch though, so I'm very grateful you have made this video on their differences.
The keyboard tracking allows for some interesting and sometimes surprising results in paraphonic modes. It caught me out to begin with, but now I’ve got the idea, I’m very glad they put the knob on the Matriarch. :-)
Hmmm. The Matriarch has this stupid glide problem with short attack and glide times when playing longer intervals. Otherwise I love the sound of my Matriarch. And for short glide times I have my other synths. Greetings from Germany!🇩🇪🤝
Your videos have been a great source of information and inspiration as I've been wiggling through my modular journeys, thanks for putting so much time and effort into helping so many folks out! By far turn to your info vids the most when I'm looking for a solid look into something. Just picked up a grandmother and discovered (quite joyously!) that you now (at least since firmware version 1.1.0) CAN disable the arp's top/bottom note repeats! You have to do it via a sysex message which can be a little confusing if you haven't dabbled with them before and isn't something you can just change back and forth on the fly. Wanted to point it in case anyone else had submitted themselves to not having that capability! The particulars are in the firmware update notes since 1.1.0! Enjoy the arpy goodness! 😊
I sold a BUNCH of stuff. I got the Grandmother last year and absolutely loved it. i sold almost all of my Arturia Synths, all the volca stuff I had and some guitar pedals. I basically will just have my DAW and Moog synths and pedals.
That's a good analogy. I own and use a full system (including the speakers and the mixer), and have to say that the matriarch has more features. Soundwise, they're different for obvious reasons (the filter) and less obviously, the system 100 has no custom or regular I.C.'s in it..it's literally all true analog.

I was only able to afford a used Grandmother, which I love! But that Matriarch sure does have me drooling! One day... she will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine.
Me from the future: I have both now and I regret nothing. The Matriarch gives me everything I wished the Grandmother had. With the exception of the spring reverb tank, you won’t be losing out on anything by just getting the matriarch. However, if you have the Grandmother and want to add the super-dupermother to your collection, they have an incredible synergy that adds a lot. If you can, pick up the Matriarch. It’s magic.
I’m fortunate to have a Matriarch, but my hand does sometimes stray over to the empty space to the right of it... I’d be keen to hear how you are using them together. :-)

An iOS editor for live performance and in the studio seems like a no brainer so the cc midi access is controlled by a dedicated app to accomplish the same things like what IK did with the uno synth! iOS also has the Moog system 15 for sequence and arp stuff an app which I have used with grandmother. And apps are even cheaper than modular as well as regular plug-ins. And desktop or laptop computers are still way too clunky for me.my computer is my iPads /pro / air. And I refuse to go backwards after all the work I have gotten done with synths and iPads. You are a god of quality information my brother thank ya! I have a Grandmother, I would love to have a Matriarch in the future. I don't know if I should sell my GM or keep it and use it as a Matriarch expansion (since I don't have any eurorack modules). I haven't found too much info on the Internet about pairing both synths together, maybe I have to do my homework on semi-modular synthesis.
@@Victor-ul4qq I ended up sending back the GM to Thomann and exchanged it for a Matriarch paying the difference in price. I don't regret it, loved the GM but the Matriarch is the GM on steroids.
Personally, while I love the spring, i didn’t miss it - I don’t think it would add much to the longer stereo delays which I tend to gravitate to with Matriarch. It would probably be nice with short punchy delay times though
I notice you've got the grandmother's volume pretty much dimed to match the volume of the grandmother which is half way up at most...I noticed something similar comparing my matriarch to a friend's grandmother. Is there a reason for this? The three major differences I noticed (besides the obvious stuff regarding reverb vs delay, four oscillators vs two etc) was the grandmother had more gain, a more pleasant sounding white noise to it, and the oscillators sounded just a hair bit better, warmer, more of that classic Moog gooey tone. Im still super stoked I've got the matriarch, but it makes me feel like I need both. Anyone else notice this?
I was using a pre-production model here, so I never measured the difference (I gain match when I edit the video anyway). Regardless, it would be interesting if anyone else with experience with both comments
I own a moog matriarch, grandmother, and Sound Studio 3, for over a year, but I'm still struggling to understand what the patch points actually do and HOW to use them. And I don't find the user manual to be much help. Any recommendations for learning resources?
OMG I love all your videos. Owned and loved Moog synths for a while but always lamented at the limited but beautiful waveforms and glad to finally see FM. I believe the answer is no, but cant confrim that the filter POLE characteristics (1-4) cannot be changed as in the 25 and 37s. THATwould make these PERFECT. Can you confirm?

Dang you're good! I'm definitely a beginner. I heard Cory Henry playing the sub 37, and it blew my mind, seriously. I ordered it immediately. . Prior to that, I had zero interest in synths. Now I'm hooked, and was curious about these two as well. I like them both, but the Matriarch reached me the most of the two. Good lookin out on the word to beginner's.

Any recommendations for a midi controller that can store groups of cc values as presets? I have a Keith Mcmillen softstep that I bought to control my Clusterflux, but I'm looking for something that's easier to use, or doesn't need software. The ultimate goal would be to save/send groups of cc's to save the essence or variations of patches on my GM synth, or my Clusterflux.
I just bought a Grandmother- it's in the mail. This will be my first trip into semi-modular synths. The one thing I REALLY wish it had was the delay module the Matriarch has. Is there a way to bring in a delay mod to work in the ecosystem of the Grandmother? Thanks
Probably a guitar pedal. There are analog ones out there, and stereo ones. Daniel Fisher’s Grandmother demo for Sweetwater has him using one - see what you think. Moog made a limited run of Moogerfooger delay pedals, but they are super expensive second hand now.
Great video, Mr. Pop. I'm loving my GM and have been considering grabbing a Matriarch. The pending release of the Poly D has me hesitating for now. I'm confident that either would be competent enough to serve our purposes, though there are factors the give me pause with each. The obvious "value factor" comes into play while considering the Poly D. But I do really like the idea of partnering the Matriarch with the GM and the Mother 32. Thanks again for this resource. I'm sure I'll come to a decision that I'll be happy with... eventually.

On this video it literally looks to be almost twice the size of the Grandmother. But the specs says it's on 11" larger. at 32" wide. Is it only 32" wide?
@@loopop With the KeyStep Pros Gate connected to the (Amplitude) Envelope Trigger seems to work, but that CV controls the entire synth. Is there a way to individually use the oscillators? @@dude65535 I went ahead and connected my KeyStep Pro via MIDI and Decoupled the oscillators via the manual's MIDI section. Each oscillator is triggering paraphonically (from OSC 1-4). If I wanted to patch the CV Gate Out from the Keystep Pro to the Matriarch I can control Pitch, Pulse Width Modulation, and Lin FM. The CV Gate In can go through the Amplitude ASDR which triggers the entire Matriarch (in tandem) paraphonically. So those are the ways I figured out. I'm thinking, depending on when the sequences trigger the oscillators might swap around a bit, making complete control of one oscillator not an option.

I guess Everyone sounds Perfect through a Moog Vocoder 😂. I mean, it worked for Cher after Sunny Crashed into the ski lift pole 😔😂🎉. Cher used it in life after Love song around late turn of Century 1999~2001~ish territory. Great Rolling, the 25 cid, Molly and friends. Still prefer laying low in the dirt with a few buttons and some Cubensis and why not through in the river 5 Meo dmt, or some good old fashioned Ayahuasca (spelling). Even Peyote. Dislike people who complain about it ALL being to strong.. buck up and enjoy.. pretty much sure you won't die. Maybe its just me.. i am the idiot who puts 10 gel taps of the 25 cid and everyone was like What the f*ck😂. Then crossed a interstate highway dodging the cars just to get into mine. Realized i broke a hose for radiator coolant. Now starting to trip my face off while everything is Extremely drippy at this point...10 gellys Hit Quick. The owner was nice enough to Let me park car overnight. The place shut down and cops are like Everywhere passing my car as im tripping exponentially to different Planes and Platoes. And finally., my ride showed up. We went back to the bar and i experienced 1 of 3 Life Changing Moments, an Epifony. Houres seemed like microseconds. I saw The Most Incredible 3d moving Angels. After that experience I was COMPLETELY BAFFLED. FYI.. the place i was tripping, drank and realized it is not about me. The bar was the place where the Liberty Bell was hidden. And just up the road is a place where other Extremely individuals stayed that helped us move forward and become more Civilised. I'm thinking 🤔 Benjamin Franklin, or Penn , as our State Pennsylvania= Penns woods, kinda funny now thinking about it, my Family Came 🤣 From Transylvania. Minus the spring reverb, the Matriarch is capable of doing everything the Grandmother is capable of.

I own a moog matriarch, grandmother, and Sound Studio 3, for over a year, but I'm still struggling to understand what the patch points actually do and HOW to use them. And I don't find the user manual to be much help. Any recommendations for learning resources?

OMG I love all your videos. Owned and loved Moog synths for a while but always lamented at the limited but beautiful waveforms and glad to finally see FM. I believe the answer is no, but cant confrim that the filter POLE characteristics (1-4) cannot be changed as in the 25 and 37s. THATwould make these PERFECT. Can you confirm?

I also want to see a whole video on pairings with other devices/modules. I'm wondering if my Sherman Filterbank will be a useful tool with the Matriarch? Or my Keystep? I also have cv and gate outs from my Avalon Bassline. Hmmm?
Is it possible to sequence another synth via cv gate or use the arpeggiator while playing Matriarch separately/independently?

Dang you're good! I'm definitely a beginner. I heard Cory Henry playing the sub 37, and it blew my mind, seriously. I ordered it immediately. . Prior to that, I had zero interest in synths. Now I'm hooked, and was curious about these two as well. I like them both, but the Matriarch reached me the most of the two. Good lookin out on the word to beginner's.

Is there any way to damage the synths by randomly playing with patching ? The manual shows different voltages for different input/outputs.

Does the oscillators are the same in the Grandmother and the Matriarch (Minimoog oscillators style or another Moog oscillator)??
@loopop Is it possible to utilize the Grandmothers spring reverb but playing only through the Matriarch ? I was considering purchasing a GM and to use its modules as an extension of Matriarch, if possible to do so.
yes it's possible, but a bit of a same because the reverb is mono and Matriarch loves to be in stereo

Any recommendations for a midi controller that can store groups of cc values as presets? I have a Keith Mcmillen softstep that I bought to control my Clusterflux, but I'm looking for something that's easier to use, or doesn't need software. The ultimate goal would be to save/send groups of cc's to save the essence or variations of patches on my GM synth, or my Clusterflux.
And by GM, I mean Grandmother, not General Midi
I just bought a Grandmother- it's in the mail. This will be my first trip into semi-modular synths. The one thing I REALLY wish it had was the delay module the Matriarch has.
Is there a way to bring in a delay mod to work in the ecosystem of the Grandmother?

Probably a guitar pedal. There are analog ones out there, and stereo ones. Daniel Fisher’s Grandmother demo for Sweetwater has him using one - see what you think.
Moog made a limited run of Moogerfooger delay pedals, but they are super expensive second hand now.
My grand dad have one, im using Opsix, Moodwave, Wavestate

Great video, Mr. Pop. I'm loving my GM and have been considering grabbing a Matriarch. The pending release of the Poly D has me hesitating for now. I'm confident that either would be competent enough to serve our purposes, though there are factors the give me pause with each. The obvious "value factor" comes into play while considering the Poly D. But I do really like the idea of partnering the Matriarch with the GM and the Mother 32. Thanks again for this resource. I'm sure I'll come to a decision that I'll be happy with... eventually.

Be cheaper and smaller? No extra sounds on Grandmother to my knowledge

On this video it literally looks to be almost twice the size of the Grandmother. But the specs says it's on 11" larger. at 32" wide. Is it only 32" wide?

@@loopop With the KeyStep Pros Gate connected to the (Amplitude) Envelope Trigger seems to work, but that CV controls the entire synth.

You can control the CV of each oscillator separately with CV. So a Keystrp pro could run 2 different sequences. :-)
@@dude65535 I went ahead and connected my KeyStep Pro via MIDI and Decoupled the oscillators via the manual's MIDI section. Each oscillator is triggering paraphonically (from OSC 1-4). If I wanted to patch the CV Gate Out from the Keystep Pro to the Matriarch I can control Pitch, Pulse Width Modulation, and Lin FM. The CV Gate In can go through the Amplitude ASDR which triggers the entire Matriarch (in tandem) paraphonically. So those are the ways I figured out. I'm thinking, depending on when the sequences trigger the oscillators might swap around a bit, making complete control of one oscillator not an option.

Cher used it in life after Love song around late turn of Century 1999~2001~ish territory. Great Rolling, the 25 cid, Molly and friends. Still prefer laying low in the dirt with a few buttons and some Cubensis and why not through in the river 5 Meo dmt, or some good old fashioned Ayahuasca (spelling). Even Peyote. Dislike people who complain about it ALL being to strong.. buck up and enjoy.. pretty much sure you won't die. Maybe its just me.. i am the idiot who puts 10 gel taps of the 25 cid and everyone was like What the f*ck😂. Then crossed a interstate highway dodging the cars just to get into mine. Realized i broke a hose for radiator coolant. Now starting to trip my face off while everything is Extremely drippy at this point...10 gellys Hit Quick. The owner was nice enough to Let me park car overnight. The place shut down and cops are like Everywhere passing my car as im tripping exponentially to different Planes and Platoes. And finally., my ride showed up. We went back to the bar and i experienced 1 of 3 Life Changing Moments, an Epifony. Houres seemed like microseconds. I saw The Most Incredible 3d moving Angels. After that experience I was COMPLETELY BAFFLED. FYI.. the place i was tripping, drank and realized it is not about me. The bar was the place where the Liberty Bell was hidden. And just up the road is a place where other Extremely individuals stayed that helped us move forward and become more Civilised. I'm thinking 🤔 Benjamin Franklin, or Penn , as our State Pennsylvania= Penns woods, kinda funny now thinking about it, my Family Came 🤣 From Transylvania. No worries, we have to test before Biting these Days. S.T.I./S.T.D. Herpies and ALL that other stuff that you can call a Standing Ovation (the clap). And the RH+ or Rh- Factor. 👽 Have a DO NOT MESS WITH THE BASQUE REGION. Between France and Spain even Portugal spots.
