- With Sonic Unleashed recently recieving a ton of praise and people beginning to apprecuiate the boost stages in the game, I wanted to talk about its boost stages.Many people have been saying Unleashed is where the series peaked but I personally believe it was Sonic Generations. I discuss why in this video.

Sonic unleashed is my favorite Sonic game, and Generations is my 2nd favorite. And that’s mainly because I love the boost gameplay in those games. It’s neck and neck for me but I like the boost gameplay in Sonic unleashed a little more. While generations controls a lot better and is basically flawless I like the faster speed, longer levels, more difficult levels, and more difficult ranking system that unleashed provides.
I got a lot to say lol.
So Sonic Unleashed is a lot more challenging in the boosting stages compared to Sonic Generations. This is very true and it also causes Sonic Generations to be a lot more casual and accepting to new players. But the main issue that I have with Sonic Generations is that you master it very fast. (If you don't count speed running and breaking the game) I don't see the issue with making Sonic have less time to react to obstacles as a means to higher the difficulty within levels because Sonic is built on the philosophy of replayability. The boosting gameplay's main source fun comes from replaying the level, getting better at reacting to upcoming obstacles and getting through the stage faster. This is why I find shortening the time you have to react to obstacles as a perfect way to make the boosting gameplay much more challenging. If it's all about reacting fast, why not find out how good you are at reacting?
As the paths within a level, I don't see much of an issue with either game. Sonic Generations does have a lot more paths within the levels but my main issue with that is there is not incentive to go on 90% of the cool secret paths. If maybe some of the paths were tricky to follow but will get you through the stage faster, that would be a lot better. Something else that could make the extra paths in Sonic Generations a lot better is if the ranks were a little bit harder so that you really need to find the best pathways with my previous point in consideration. Overall though, the extra pathways don't take away from Sonic Generations and it makes the game feel a lot more alive actually. With Sonic Unleashed, the extra pathways would have made it a lot better because it already has a lot more incentive to complete the levels faster than Sonic Generations. So basically, the extra pathways could use a lot more work in future versions of the boost if they choose to go down that route.
For controls, you're right. The homing attack is stupid and should be mapped to A. Sonic Generations drift is a lot better because Sonic no longer has the weight of a car anymore. However I don't really see the whole slippery point. I actually think Sonic Unleashed has some pretty precise control besides the drift. I do think Colors did it a lot better but I don't think Unleashed is bad in that department whatsoever. Sonic Generations is just fine in being precise as well.

I've played both games. Unleashed clears Generations.
I've heard many times that Generations "had better controls" than Unleashed and when I was playing, I just couldn't see it. I found myself repeatedly returning to Unleashed more than Generations. I learned both feels the best I could and at no point did I find myself really enjoying Generations. It felt small and tight. I couldn't get much distance on anything. It was tight, but in a bad way. Unleashed felt more loose and like I wasn't restricted.
Although both controls are specifically made to fit the level design and vice versa, I can see a few tweaks being made to the Unleashed controls and it'd be great! Can't say I did with Generations and if I did, it would always circle back to Unleashed.
It's all subjective however. Unleashed was made more loose to accommodate the length of the game. Generations is more tight because the levels are shorter. It's probably the biggest apples to oranges I've seen. And I really like apples.

Great discussion on this topic, as much as I love Unleashed and it's my favourite Sonic game of all-time, Generations is the BETTER game, as I believe Sonic Team learned what worked and didn't worked in Unleashed and refined and improved it for Generations. And yes, Seaside Hill Act 2 is the best stage in Generations, level design wise ;)

Rush’s boost gameplay is literally the reason why unleashed even exists as they both function the same way, minus the fact that unleashed has the stomp, the 3D perspective & the ramps tricks system bein a lil different, gameplay wise & mechanically they’re both literally the same

Unleashed hides many of its paths behind quick time events, Generations hides its paths behind smart level design. Gens is so much better it’s not even funny

QTE only rewards you for giving you a shorter path rather than punishing you and making you take the slower path (just like the normal ramps that makes you reach higher when boosting) except for EggmanLand which is the line for your reaction to continue or not in the challenging level. If you want to explore the slower paths then you can avoid doing QTE successfully, but are made for those who want to break their time records in mind. Not to "hide paths" which also has many other ways to get them like in Generation which 100% follows it's level design but simpler.
The best way to go is with Generations modded on the PC. With the ridiculous amount of options, you can increase the rank difficulty for example. Also, with Unleashed project, and all the possible add-ons for that, and related level pack mods, you get the Unleashed daytime levels WITH the tighter Generations controls. There are plenty of physics mods that do things like increased speed, and even camera mods if you want the camera to function like in Unleashed. The best thing about Generations is how the mods expand the game. I don't feel like I must choose between Unleashed daytime levels or Modern Sonic in Gens anymore.
I haven't played either. But just on a visual level I prefer Generations.
Alot of people say Unleashed is the best Sonic game in terms of visuals but really nigga all it is is a bunch shaders and that shit be lookin' dated anything could if they tried at least 5% percent like bruh. 🤦♂️ Sorry but people really think a bunch of shaders gonna make a game look good.
The controls of Sonic unleashed Sonic just makes it impossible for me to enjoy the game. Both the button layout and how he handles really sucks.
While I like both Unleashed and Generation I have to say Sonic Generations is better, I loved Sonic Unleashed's story and is the best story telling in any Sonic game but story don't really matter Gameplay matters. Sonic Generations refined the boost formula to it's full potential and Sonic Team showed us how to make a great boost game (which got ruined thanks to Forces). The Adventure Formula wasn't fully refined BC SA2 felt like a spectacle and the less We talk about Sonic 06/Sonic the Dumbster Fire the better but Sonic Generations had the better level design then Unleashed look no further than Modern Sonic Seaside Hill (while I don't care for Sonic Heroes I love Generation's Seaside Hill).
Now I find Classic Sonic to be a better gimmick then the Werehog, Classic Sonic was in Sonic Generations to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary and while His gameplay is nowhere near as good as Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus Classic Sonic was a joy (until Sonic Forces ruined that) The Werehog was over saturated yes the Werehog can be fun but most of the levels are frustrating and the less We talk about Eggmanland the better.
While Sonic Unleashed and Super Smash Bros. Brawl help rekindled My interested in Sonic after Sonic 06's disaster I felt Sonic wasn't there yet. Sonic Generations was a joy to play that the game had huge marketing from Comics, Figures from Jazwares and Sonic returning to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade The wait I felt was worth it and Sonic Generations is My favorite 3D Sonic game (But Sonic 3 and Knuckles is still better IMO), Also Sonic Generations has great mods that are worth checking out so if I'd recommend any version of Sonic Generations the PC version is the way to go
That’s a good point would u say that sonic was in a better place in late 00s then he is now cos we’ve not had a good game since gens except mania which was a throwback game.

@@arenwalker3624 I'd would say with games like Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, Sonic 06, Sonic Rivals, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Sonic Chronicles and Sonic and the Black Knight and shows like Sonic X. I think Sonic was in the worst spot.
with exception of Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic Unleashed HD the brand was just getting alot of hate from the Wildcards (Sonic Haters, Sonic Fans outside of the Fanbase) where just dog pilling on the series. the 2010s where eh. Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus where bangers, Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice and TSR where alright but Sonic Lost World and Sonic 4 where mediocre but Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystals and Sonic Forces sucks.

I agree. I mean when you look at what Sonic Generations did with Modern Sonic’s stages or even the day stages in Unleashed, it emphasizes how disappointingly bad Modern Sonic stages in Forces is. Even though Unleashed had more flawed controls for being the earliest to do this, the themes, and level designs were awesomely memorable! Just imagined a game like Generations with peak boost gameplay, and only original levels like in Unleashed but super epic next generation levels with uniquely challenging gameplay? Pretty sure that’s what we all been striving. The day we get a 3D Sonic game with good controls, and level design will be a definitive sign for 3D games again. To me we haven’t had the most solid charm on both since the adventure games when you really look at what made those games special among long veterans. Not that they were perfect. Just a bummer they didn’t expand what made them great in quality of life form. Perfect controls, and high speed platforming be damned.
Yh it’s a shame that sa2 and Gens were peak in terms of controls and one of them is based on nostalgia the other is 2 decades old and I’m need of a remake.

In terms of level design and control, Sonic Generations is better. The problem with Unleashed's level design for the daytime stages is that its focused on speed and speed alone. I've learned after playing through all the mainline games recently that good Sonic level design is made up of speed and exploration. The daytime stages are speed focused and nighttime stages are exploration. So for Unleashed while there IS alternative paths it's not as frequent as Generations where you always have a different route you can take to get through the level faster or find extras (in the classic stages at least). The level design in Gens feels like an evolution of 3&K and SA1 level design which is why it's so great. Even though Generations continued to use the "car" control that Unleashed introduced I can at least say Generations improved on it by making it tighter and feel like I'm playing Sonic Heroes with the boost. The drift is also much better, while Unleashed's drift was more technical the game didn't teach you how to use it well and it wasn't used much so making technical in the first place made it kinda pointless and I'm totally fine with it being simplified. But yeah Generations is the better game, but Unleashed is still decent at best and has some great qualities.
Now make Why Sonic Colors is better than both.

Adventure 1, 2, heroes, Unleash, Generations, and Colors are examples of Sonic team trying and succeeding.
Even so, I prefer Unleashed over Generations.
I definitely agree with almost everything you’ve said in this video in regards to gens having better boost stages, minus the dimps complaint as I don’t feel like any of the Unleashed day stages ever got that bad when it came to having too many bottomless pits in level design compared to what we had to deal with in the rush & advance games.
If you included the graphics in the comparison it would be unfair for generations
The problem with Generations level design is how open it is. If you play these stages with the adventure formula it wouldn't make much of a different. The 2D sections looked like it was made for classic sonic. Unleashed on the other hand has much faster 2D sections. And if you say things like shamar has slow 2D then I'll just say you can skip those sections with shortcuts in the level.
Both Unleashed and Generations have good levels but I think if Generations used the adventure formula for the levels it would be more fun.

imo sonic unleashed is my favorite because of how hard it is because most of my fails in generations was because the not really fun platforming but sonic unleasheds platforming is terrible but there is less of that in there and its more sonic rush styled plus sonic frontiers made me used to the boost button mapped on x

sonic generations is a literal shape shifter and can be modded to be turned into most if not all sonic games.
Lol, I saw a mod of gens that was just adventure sonic in emerald coast. This game is literally any sonic game.
Yeah, I played both unleashed and generations today. And honestly generations kinda blew me away…..it’s different than unleashed. But unleashed is unique in its own way. But I definitely liked generations better.

The drift is so bad in sonic unleashed
Nuh uh, imo I think it's underrated. Play savannah cidatel act 2 again, I practiced alot. I boost for a little bit and before at least 2 seconds into the turn, stop and hold the direction you wanna turn to tightly (rinse and repeat)
Unrelated note but colors' is great too. I mean like, once you kinda F E E L it.... I used to think it was trash but the trick is pretty easy. Just keep up your running momentum and then at the very part where you're about to hit a wall and supposed to turn, take advantage of you're great turning to finesse it quickly to not only smoothly turn, but to also keep your speed after drifting. (I'm 2 years late but just if you're still here, keep this in mind)

Tbh I don’t really like Sonic Generations because it’s story isn’t really that good and for more reason. I only like the gameplay because it’s really fun.
But with unleashed I enjoy the story and the gameplay.
Generations is a curious one. Because in some ways, it feels very polished (controls, main stages) but in others, it feels surprisingly half-assed ("story," the extra levels, the final boss).
There's not much to the game. Unleashed felt more like a full-fledged adventure.

In my opinion, Unleashed would be better than Generations, there are a lot more cutscenes, the fastest sonic in existence, a very good storyline, & a longer game. But generations have a lot more mods than Unleashed since it is available on Steam, also has a good storyline, & uses the same engine but has better maneuvering than unleashed, bless you sega. Generations is an awesome game but my heart is all on Unleashed.
Edit: I do agree with your statement, Unleashed might be sometimes hard to control due to how fast he is & Generations on the other hand are easier to control.

this is just a skill issue and this is how I can tell when drifting in unleashed your not supposed to boost it takes skill the stomp works of momentum only part where I can agree its not that sonic is not tight its that he's sensitive in movement in gens the stomp stops you in a air straight down the drift isn't even used in the same way in gens and then that goes into lvl design to their is 2 stages max where the drift is used and I feel like they just dumbed it down their is not skill involved and im not saying it as an excuse foe poor controls their videos showing how the drift isn't bad and imo its more satisfying than gens I think one game is just harder than the other ig

I do not agree a lot of your points seem to come across as if you didn’t even try to learn to play the game ngl :p when you homing attack things that are high lighted and things that arnt and didn’t even try to learn to drift and call the level design bad I don’t think you should criticize a game just because it’s hard for you to play a lot of people can get trough stages just fine without doing all of that
