    I must add that the Strymon T-shirt was not intentional Hahah!
    Again, just a few opinions on my experience with endorsements and how they seem to work. I'm all up for discussion!

      I want to say thank you for this. There haven't been many good videos about the topic of endorsements, and this is one of the very few. I think if anybody has questions, they really shouldn't have many. Keep up the outstanding work, dude. We need it.

      I agree with wolf warren great video . there is a lot of big misconceptions on endorsements . i am sure with someone like yourself it is to the point of being aggravating on many levels .

      Rabea Massaad my main thing is constantly chasing the tone that I hear in my head and that changes based off what is inspiring me at that time. For me that's anything from Classical guitar to Rick Graham to Blues to Metal or even Jazz. Great video man.

    We should all be talking a lot more about endorsements to try and eliminate the idea that it's all about being given free stuff.
    Building healthy business relationships between company and artist is entirely crucial, any artist seeking endorsement should be asking what they can do for the company. Any equipment the company give is, in a way, a thank you for boosting the profile of the company, and a spring board for you to do more.
    While it isn't completely unheard of for companies to approach artists and ask them to try their equipment, it's certainly not happening at the level people have heard about in legend.
    The brand has to like the artist, and the artist has to like the brand, and they sit to discuss the business opportunities of the two parties working together.
    Music business, as I often say, is more about the business than the music.

    What peple don't understand is that an endorsement is a business investment on behalf of the company. They are investing time, money and gear into an artist to get some return from it.

    Great video.
    I hate the misconception that companies endorse artists.
    Artists endorse companies. Gear companies should be duking it out to get to endorse them. Artists carry the fanbases, which means solid marketing.
    Take pride in your work and become one of those players that people want to be like.
    That goes for on and off stage.

    Thanks for this Rabea. I really love the way you are so honest. This is what people should know. I agree with everything you said. I would only want to be endorsed by companies who produce equipment that I already own / use. I, like you, use many different products in my studio and I am VERY proud to use my Profiling amplifier (Kemper). I make sure that even though I am not endorsed by any company, I acknowledge that I have used their products in every recording I produce/engineer etc. Not because I want an endorsement, but because it's the right thing to do. I have massive respect for all of the companies that manufacture the equipment I use. Without them . . . . My sound wouldn't be, my sound.
    Apple, RME, Kemper, Avid, Chapman Guitars, Toontrack etc. Thank you.
    Great video by the way.

    I never thought of endorsements, but ever since opening up the Guitar World issue with Tom Morello and laying eyes on a PRS ad, I knew that one day I would have one. This was before I knew how much they cost. I never actually expected to have one, but I love my acoustic and electric SE guitars. On top of that I got to meet Paul Reed Smith and he signed the backplate and we got to shoot the breeze for a minute. Some dreams do end up coming true. Maybe one day I'll be a PRS artist. Been a fan for a long time, going on 18 years. If not, no biggie because something happened that I never would've imagined and I couldn't be happier. Sometimes when we dream, and we get close to achieving them, the reality is a major letdown from the expectation. I'm grateful for the TH-cam personalities that have discussed endorsements and the process, as well as debunking the mythological aspects of it. Keep up the great work Bea!

    As an AR rep I can approve that it's a pain in the ass having to deal with people who want free stuff. When I notice that's what the artist is looking for I lose interest in the conversation and will not start a relationship.
    Listen to this man and offer the companies interesting ideas of mutual support.
    Thanks for the great video!

    If you really like a brand of guitars, just keep playing them proudly, show them off in videos, at gigs, photoshoots and so on. Make sure people see what you play and in time there will come a moment. You'll meet someone, the right person will see it or you'll feel confident to approach the brand yourself. Just let it happen.

    That’s good to know; because I’ve always loved Jackson guitars.. and I never thought I would love or play any other guitar..but oh well.. guess what.. people and music changes.. and along with it comes the change and needs for instruments. I never thought I’d like fender strats; but I do now. Ibanez I never liked; but guess what; they are changing their neck styles now..and I like them now. So do I like the idea of endorsements now? Probably not for me when I get that good?
    So thanks Rabea.. good insight and video. Thanks.

    People's idea of gear landing in their laps (from endorsements) stems from the 70's, where Marshall had A LOT of money, and would end up giving Amps to a huge number of artists! Orange Amplifiers recently put up an excellent write-up on what they expect from an artist when endorsing!

    • @SphennyMusic
      @SphennyMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jobe Lewis back when bands had a 5 Marshall stacks in their back line you couldn't miss it. Now a lot of bands just mic up and you can't even see their amps anymore.... or they still have 5 Marshall stacks but don't plug into them just to look badass

  • @natfingerboard
    @natfingerboard 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sometimes you are not that well known, but a company sees the talent on you and the future on your image, and helps to get you out there, in exchange of showing their gear. Companies have a lot of network, but they need the talent to show their products. There are a lot of ways to approach it. But it always is a two way street, always.

    Well said. The bottom line is....If you think you got something that can interest a producer of instruments they will probably think so too if you make your point. I'm not a big artist but I've earned some respect national in Sweden and that has been recognized somewhat. I've approached some brands I've been interested in and if they see the qualitys you have and see what it's worth it will work out. But you have to make it worth for them, put in lot's of hours. Social media is a big part of it. But I would never promote a brand I didn't like.

    I really like the 'family' aspect that you mentioned. I can think of a few companies that I'd love to work with just to be part of what they stand for. For example Walrus Audio. I love what they're building and I'd love to spread that love. The problem being that I'm not even close to being famous enough. XD

    I'm lucky enough to be playing in 4 bands at the moment, all of them rock based, one of them is a prog rock band. And I must admit that getting some endorsement would be helpful gear wise? And if I had the money, I'd be buying the Rabea Chapman ML1, I love that guitar, it looks great, and you make it sound amazing! How do you go about approaching companies for an endorsement? You said that basically you have be in a position where people are going to see you use a companies gear, and that sometimes companies can approach you for an endorsement, but how do the gear companies get to see you use Thier gear? M

    Hi Bea! :)
    Do you think that making TH-cam videos only (with a conspicuous audience) is enough for asking an endorsement?
    Could a "Part-time" musician (like students or workers) run for and endorsement in the 2017?
    Thank you so much, and keep up the good work :D
    Cheers

    • @leejk3926
      @leejk3926 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IK that I'm not Rabea and have no experience in it but I've seen TH-camrs get endorsements and not just music TH-camrs either. If you get big enough and a company is aware of social media and the influence it has then you may even be more likely to get endorsed as a very large TH-camr rather than a full time musician unless they're pretty famous. Once again, I have no experience, that's just how I'd think it would go down.
      Jared Dines and Rob Scallon are endorsed by Chapman guitars (I believe) because Rob Chapman knows social media and TH-cam very well and those TH-camrs have influence within the guitar community.
      TH-camrs who review anime are often sponsored by Crunchyroll because it's related and the TH-camrs are well known within that community so viewers are likely to use Crunchyroll.
      So on for any video genre that is applicable I would imagine.

    People forget that it's called the Music 'Business'. Just like Tesco selling a brand of sausage. A record company sells you. You have to be a viable brand. It's up to you to make the product and show Tesco! How good it is. Then if it sells, a company, e.g. Ford. Will offer you a good deal on vans for delivery. Bea. You should do a clothing line and guitar accessories. Straps, leads etc. A Bea-lead...BLead. You can have that one.

    exactly.. great video! i forget how but a drummer friend got an endorsement from "whatever" sticks etc. (can't recall, i'd be funny if there were "whatever" brand sticks lol) but he doesn't have a media or band to promote the brand, just lessons and an occasional free gig.. so how did he swing that deal? i know it wasn't a big endorsement for sure.. also, my channel is really small but we use chapmans and diamond guitars/ amps among others (i've been in the buying/ selling business for years and started the channel to help sell the guitars) for writing, recording and posting our songs etc. onto youtube.. how much media status would someone need to try getting an endorsement?

    That's why I want to be endorsed by ESP or Charvel. I've used their guitars for a couple years now, and I love them, and I feel they're great for the type of music I do. I'd love to show them off. Same with Orange amps. I use a small orange crush mic'd up and it sounds great! Can't say though I wouldn't be opposed to joining up with PRS strictly to play one of their $4,000 models. I'd never need another guitar again!

    I've worked on endorsements from both side (for a manufacturer and for an artist), and all I can say: if I you ask yourself how to get an endorsement or which brand you should try to get on board, just forget it... If you have to ask, stay away from this thought! My 2¢

    • @wolfwarren6376
      @wolfwarren6376 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I worked at a pedal company for three years, so I can relate. If you came to us because you thought of us first when you asked yourself who to be endorsed by instead of actually using the products and making great music with them, you should already know what the response letter will be. It's also why I never try to get endorsements, because I think to much and know for a fact that I'd never get an endorsement with the amount of thinking I put into it.

      Phil Smith I was thinking to myself before even clicking this video that you either have to have show that you've bought, have been using, and love their products or that you have to be a good content creator with a substantial enough following. If you are looking for endorsements like you are shopping for the right pair of shoes then you won't ever be endorsed by anyone.

    Back in the day, guitar companies fell over themselves competing to get Steve Vai' signature on their guitars. Why? Because he had the eyes and ears of the rock guitar community following him. You have to have the following before anything happens.

    As an endorsed artist. What could be potential downsides to an endorsement? Or maybe stories where endorsement deals have gone south? (No names of course!)

  • @digiscream
    @digiscream 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've tried explaining this to so many people, and there are always more who just don't get it. Hell, I've been offered endorsements purely because I happen to run quite a large forum; that gives me influence without playing a single note. (*)
    The only key point that you missed, I think, is that endorsement terms are tightening these days because the arse has dropped out of the industry; budgets for artist relations and promotion are dropping, while the requirements for artists to maintain their endorsement are increasing. It's just business.
    (*) I declined, incidentally, on the basis that I've always promoted that brand and (in my circle of influence) my name is already synonymous with them but I don't need any more from them than I already get, so making it official would only serve to place restrictions on both parties, and I think it'd be counter-productive.

    Bea, before approaching a company to ask to endorse them, how large do you think an artists fan base should be ?

      Steven Cela many want 20,000 - 50,000 social media to begin to consider and ussually need to be a touring musican or highly veiwed youtube channel etc. Most deals are just artist discounts

    • @eetfuk5699
      @eetfuk5699 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Cela You shouldn't have to ask that question. You don't hit a certain numbers of followers and then have guitar companies sending you gear.

      King Trump That wasn't the point of my question, I wanted to know what companies see within artists for them to consider what the endorsement does for them, at the end of the day the company wants to be advertised through the artists medium so they have the means reach a wider audience aka the artists fans.

    How to get endorsed to chapman guitars? Am a guitarist from India. I asked andertons 3 years back that if they can ship chapman guitars to India if I bought them. But unfortunately they did not ship guitars to India at that time. So what will it take to get endorsed to CG? And I didn't found any chapman guitar in local stores. :(

    A friend of mine got an endorsement from a rather big guitar brand through their regional distributor. However the guitar he was given didn't work with his sound, he used single coils and the guitar was humbuckers. At gigs he's just have the guitar on a stand on stage and never used it. 😂 😂

    If you aren't in a band or aren't putting any music out as an artist, could you still get an endorsement if you were popular on social media (e.g. Instagram, Facebook etc.)?

    Am I right in thinking a lot of guitar endorsements are simply discounted products? For example, 75% off all PRS SE guitars for x period of time?

    • @SphennyMusic
      @SphennyMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamie flexman sometime they are for sure. Like Revv amplification offer their products at an "artist discount". Sometimes brands offer free shipping and handling but the artist must return the product after they made a video. This is common on TH-cam, especially with pedal companies.

    I've noticed you like to refer to them as endorsements in the music world, I BMX and pros seem to refer to brands that send them gear as sponsors (which I imagine is the same in the skateboarding world) could you clarify any difference between an endorsement and a sponsor if any in the case of receiving gear (not money as that's what I associated with the word sponsor)

      One of Rabea's unreleased solo tracks. A solo album has been on the agenda for several years, but Dorje, Toska and Chapman Guitars work have taken greater precedence over it.

  • @AndreBaeta1

    I only disagree on the fact that you dont need to play good to get an endorsment. I Think most people would like to have a certain bands gear because they sound good, because they have the skill and choose that gear because its what the band needs to represent their level of skill. I only buy certain brands if I know that a great and talented musician uses it.

    as a small scale guitar maker my problem to start was finding really good pro players that fitted my kind of guitar vibe and got where I was coming from then
    try them so i can get feedback etc
    It's been hard work but getting more social media now from 2 pro players
    like bea said it works both ways but you need to love the product first
