      While we are at it, mark your drill/sand/scrape spots and protect whatever you don't want sliced with tape before taking chunks out of your guitar. Ask anyone that has tinkered with guitars, it is very easy to overdo a scrape/drill/sand spot just eyeing it out.

    Hey Bea, how about tremol-no? Have you tried it? I really really recommend it, you can basically switch between full floating trem to hardtail in seconds.

    • @riffsnreviews
      @riffsnreviews 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Or a couple of coins (number of coins will vary depending on country lol), some tape, and double sided tape, wrap coins in tape, stick the tapped coins with double sided tape to the wood in front or behind (or both) the block (front of block if you want to drop tune) take 5 minutes to and is very effective, and costs the price of the coins and tape...

    • @Yesidoplaytheguitar
      @Yesidoplaytheguitar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      RiffsNReviews Mal von Ox That's what i did on my trem. Cost me exactly half a euro and some tape. Hasn't moved half a millimeter in over 2 years, and made the guitar twice as good.

    • @ErwinLiszkowicz
      @ErwinLiszkowicz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah, but tremol-no let's you block the trem on demand, moreover if you block of trem the 'cheap' way you might miss on a bit of sustain, there's a reason why luthiers use big wooden chunks to block trem permanently.

    • @Yesidoplaytheguitar
      @Yesidoplaytheguitar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, i read up on tremol-no before doing it. It's badass, but i'm a student so cheap is usually the way to go. For now at least... Have a great day!

    Did this recently with a Jackson Dinky with a cheap and nasty licensed floyd with next to no tuning stability. Cut a block of wood to size and stuck it in place and tightened up the springs to keep it locked. You can still do a dive bomb if you want but the guitar plays better, holds its tuning perfectly and the good wood-to-sustain-block contact has really increased the sustain a noticeable amount. A great way to make a cheap instrument perform a hell of a lot better!

  • @jongauthier9289
    @jongauthier9289 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Damn, Bea, you got a monster tone! I think those rubber coated springs are an awesome thing! However call me insane, but I kinda like hearing the springs creak when I'm jamming. Got some old recordings from like 15 yrs ago that I made using a Samick Strat knockoff and it would squeak like a fieldmouse with high gain, but I thought it added a little roughness to the recordings which I liked

    • @Raezioo
      @Raezioo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I really like hearing stories like these, where people think 'imperfections' are a good thing :) I'm the kind of guy who wants everything to be as perfect as can be, and it stresses me out from time to time. I could learn something from you haha! The only 'abnormal' thing I do to my basses, is setting the action quite higher, at least higher than what it should normally be. Simply because of the fact that I like 'battling' my strings :)

    • @jongauthier9289
      @jongauthier9289 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thomas Raes ha, thanks. I have always liked hearing imperfections in music. Like EVH's tremelo springs creak on the divebomb in "Eruption", or the amp hum on the "quieter" parts of "Are you gonna be my girl" by Jet, or the audible sound ofJohn Lennon flipping his switch from his neck pickup to his bridge pickup on "I want you". I don't know, it just brings a bit of realness to music for me.

    • @michaelangeloh.5383
      @michaelangeloh.5383 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The twang from the springs are a problem in a recording. - The same as the bits of string between the nut and the tuners or the bridge and the stop-tail that exists. - Anything that rings outside of the string between the nut and bridge can really ugly up your amplified or recorded sound.

  • @FlavioCastro81
    @FlavioCastro81 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    For the 3rd mod, I`ve always used rolls of coins on one side of the cavity. Cheapper, easier and also improves the sustain because of all the metal being next to the floyd block. I also used it to stop some guitars` tremolo.

    I think more sustain and crispier sound. Makes a difference. Some people can say, I don't care the difference isn't worth the money, but that little difference in sound makes Your sound more distinctive and it separates hobby guitarist from pro player. Am I right?

Did not got the red springs but still better springs and have a small piece of cloth inside each spring that works great. I did made one change later as I got noises when the block was hitting the adjustment screw - was solved with a small piece of hard felt on the tip of the screw.

    I used to think I could get away from floyd style guitars, but tracking in the studio sucks with stable bridge/locking tuner equipped guitars, the floyd does so much well, the double locking aspect is great and the fine tuners are just so useful. At the end of the day, it turned out that a blocked floyd is the perfect stable bridge guitar, and really the best bridge you can opt for, as blocked it beats everything but an Evertune, and floating, it's simply the best there is

    You missed the brass claw upgrade. I found that my floyd lost some of the highs and mellowed out with the big brass block making it a bit mid heavy, the brass claw which comes with brass screws for about a tenner seemed to balance it out a bit.

    Changing the stock tremolo plate, poles & block of my ibanez js for a gotoh + heavy brass block made a huge difference to the tone and feel of the guitar. Especially the block made the tone richer and more resonant and increased sustain. I'd recommend it to any floyd rose user.
    Springs seem like an interesting improvement.
    Question: do you prefer back plate on or off? (And why)

    Better off using a Tremol-No. It gives you 3 modes including the ability to block it without having to screw anything into your guitar. Not to mention if you eventually want to use the floating trem again it's as simple as undoing the thumb screws.

  • @grimora-dg3vq
    @grimora-dg3vq 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    First thing I notice is a huge difference in the sustain immediately! Also a bit more clarity in each note as I compare the before and after. My Sire S7 plays beautifully but the sustain on the high E and B strings sucks because of such a small OEM block. I've already added FU Tone springs because there was a noticeable rattle even though it doesn't have a full on Floyd Rose. Yeah it definitely helped.

    Whole new generation, ha ha. Never heard anybody refer to the Floyd Rose as being a “floating tremolo system.” Especially since after 40 years of using Floyd’s, I never had a floating one until about a year ago. Then, after fighting with that tuning instability, I finally put trem-stops on those guitars, ha ha.😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸

    The Fu Tone Stuff is way to expensive, sorry but charging over 20 bucks for 3 springs or 25 bucks for 3 screws and an L-shaped piece of brass... Just put a thin piece of foam into the spring. Doesn't affect the spring behaviour at all if it's not too thick and costs you 1 cent. Go to your local hardware store and ask them for a brass L-shaped piece and in 80% of the cases you can get it there for under 5 bucks with all the screws you need. The brass floyd block is legit in my opinion but all the other stuff is just hilariously expensive.

    Hipshot also makes a really really handy gadget they call the TremSetter. It's an additional spring (more or less) for your conventional strat-style tremolo system. Once it's set it makes the strat style trem absolutely SOLID. Use one on all my strats, and it makes that trem (which feels awesome, but historically detunes the guitar) absolutely rock solid. I never buy a strat now without putting one in.

    Utter rubbish. Big blocks only prevent the string energy from interacting with the body, not always musical. only fit one if you have a problem with the resonance of the instrument.most of FU tone stuff is total troll logic , some even unfit for the purpose it is sold ( brass locknuts and titanium Floyd saddles are too soft.)
    The FU Floyd is a third party bridge that can be purchased for $200 less than FU charge for the exact same bridge less the logo. Avoid this ripoff rubbish.

  • @thescerigai
    @thescerigai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best mod is the Tremmory if you can live without flutters. Sustain blocks are a scam, all they do is limit the range of your trem, just play with more volume if you want sustain.

  • @Snowy0123
    @Snowy0123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    People that have problems with floyds are usually beginner guitarists that don't understand how to set them up. Also like me, I love floyd type trems even though I don't use a whammy bar because playing a Floyd equipped guitar feels different than a hardtail. There's a softer feel when picking with a Floyd guitar, less tension feel. Hardtails feel stiffer.

  • @GatenGraver
    @GatenGraver 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Bea, just want to add that I get the wanting to do things quick and easy; but without predrilling, you could've split that body in two with those two screws. It's 1 extra step but it could mean the difference between completely destroying a guitar and having a working guitar.

    I don't know why there's a misconception about the fender trem, It is a floating trem, the thing is that people that don't know how to properly set it up, just put the plate flush to the guitar body, probably making more problems if you use the trem that way. I replaced the sustain block of a fender trem and the change in tone is amazing

    Hey Bea,
    I noticed at 9:00 that you had your iphone monitoring your main cam. What camera and app are those? They look super handy.

    Question here.I heard mick thompson? the slipknot guy, say he had his tremolo blocked but he still uses the springs 'to get the action trough the guitar.When you use foam or coated springs isnt that sustaine killing?

    So would you say 2 red springs = 3 normal springs?

  • @wolo
    @wolo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    And what about intonation? You just put the saddles in random positions and that's it? You didn't even say "take a photo with your phone to see later where they were" before disassembling the bridge

    I can't believe there is no replacement bridges for Floyd Rose/Ibanez edge pro if you get rid of the floating bit and have a solid bridge.

    Cool little vid, These trem stoppers are good as you can set them up as the hard no pull up and full dive used something like this for a long time that one hooked up to the block. Have you tried having the springs parallel?

    It helps to mark the position of the saddles with a pencil before removing them.
    I'm a big fan of billet trem blocks, steel also works and is brighter and more aggressive sounding. But both steel and brass are way better than the pot metal blocks you find on cheaper trem units.
    Cheaper bridges with pot metal saddles can be similarly upgraded to stainless or brass and the effect is even more noticeable than swapping the trem block.
    Conversely, graphtech and similar saddles are darker and warmer sounding than brass or steel but give better sustain than pot metal.

    Can you still pull the Floyd up if you remove the black screw of the trem-stopper but leave the actual L-shaped brass piece on?

      Yes - you can set it a little further back and engage it or disengage when you want to.
