    Have you taken the test yet? What did you think??

    • @battidancer
      @battidancer ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No I have not. I decided to do the practice exams on SmartyPance this week just to familiarize myself with the format and also to use a timer on those questions I need to use google or other search engines. I have to say google is quickest, I was thinking of using UpToDate and although I have used it past(great resource) , for this exam it seems content is too bulky to find what I need. But others may have different experience with it. Your advice has been very valuable.

      I took it a few days ago. I got 21/25. I was hoping that they would give better clues so that we could really study specific topics before entering the question other than just generic cardio or pulmonary. I hate not knowing if I passed or not. I used google and medscape for the references. Some of my questions were paragraphs long and took a solid minute of my time to read and comprehend. Overall I find it so frustrating that my entire career and employment comes down to these re-certification exams. No one else has to do this.

      @@battidancer Thanks John. I agree that Google was quickest, but sometimes I wasn't able to find the answer. Having a searchable PANRE blueprint, whether it's SmartyPANCE or HIPPO, I think is handy. You probably won't find your answer to a majority of questions that way, but there are times it really comes in handy. Unfortunately, I don't personally know about UpToDate, but I am seeing some people say they used it and it worked well. I suspect those people are very familiar with UTD. I'm not convinced, but I hope to test it out in the future. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    • @TheMedicineCouch

      @@GodheardandHeanswered Yep! A whole lot of stress, worry, time, and money for something no other provider has to do! I also agree with the non-specific topic "heads-up". I mean, are you going to stop and study every topic under Cardiology before answering the question? That would take forever. I personally think if I knew it was a question about say pericarditis, I would study that section pretty well to refresh my learning, then take the question. THAT would solidify my learning, and isn't that the goal of this longitudinal test? But, I have to say, I am very happy to have this option and I think it will benefit many people.

      I took the first quarter this morning, got 22/25, took about 90 minutes.
      I missed 2 that were in my field because I overthought them. My initial response is that PANRE LA is going to be a better way to learn and refresh than the traditional test.

    I really enjoyed this. Thank you for your research and helpful comments. I too just completed "Part 1" of PANRE-LA, and although I'm only 1/12 of the way done, this is so much more manageable and less time consuming and gut wrenching than the PANRE. I did not study either. Fingers crossed all goes well all the way through! Thanks again. Nice work.

    My first PANCE was in 1977 and have lost track of all the recert exams I have taken. This is first open book type exam for me. Subscribed to Smarty Pance, (great, love it!) one of your resource recommendations. Wow wish this stuff was around in the 70's, 80's, 90's, it was just textbooks and eventually review books. I’m scared! I’ve worked in derm for 12 years and last time I took the PANRE I said never again! I kept debating taking a refresher course or just going for it with PANRE-LA but after listening to your video, I think I will have to do some preparation. CME4 life was another resource I was looking at but I like the search feature of SmartyPance. Thanks so much for your videos. They are so helpful!!! 😊

      It really is a much less traumatizing experience than the PANRE! 😆Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to really go through any of the SmartyPance lectures, but I do know they have a ton of information and practice questions on the site. Of course, the price is so reasonable, you can hardly go wrong. I haven't taken the CME4Life course, but I have a classmate who loved it. She did the in-person course. Also, many people recommended it who took the pilot PANRE-LA. Thanks for the comment and it's so good to hear that people find the videos helpful! Best wishes to you with the test!

    Yay for everyone who did well! I did not. I am sure I failed with flying colors. I am in a specialty so most of this I haven't been in touch with for the past 7 yrs. I did most of what you recommended, but I think part of it is getting past myself and also learning how to read what is most important in the questions. I don't trust myself when I AM right and if I think I am right, I'm wrong. Glad to find this info. I had heard of HIPPO but not SmartyPance, so will look into one of those. I went to PA school after 50 and it was so super stressful, I feel like I am having PTSD when I open the test. Like I said, I need to get over myself. I went to PA school in my mid 40s and I do feel some of your same feelings. I haven’t exactly figured out what it is, but there are many struggles that come with learning and practicing medicine when you’re older! I’m sorry you’re struggling with the test, but it’s just the first quarter so, hopefully, you’ll find your groove and it won’t be as bad in the upcoming quarters. I have another video coming out soon about the first quarter wrapup, more thoughts on how the scoring works, and feedback from others that have left their thoughts about the test. Maybe that video will help also and give you an idea of what other people are struggling with your and where they stand. One thing to remember is that the scoring is very fluid, and you have the ability to improve the score of past quarters. I’ll talk about that more in the video. Thanks for watching and thanks for letting me know my video was helpful!

    THANK YOU!! Like a dumb a$$, seeing the “January-March” all over the NCCPA site, I did not realize the deadline was the BEGINNING of March (3/10/23) 🤦🏻‍♀️! I assumed on/around 1/1 to 3/31. And with my menopausal/ADHD /can’t remember 💩 🧠, I’m quite anxious and haven’t even started 😳. AND my doc refused to fill out papers for an accommodation of extra time per question (max of double time FYI). This video helped a lot!! 👍🏻.
    And YES, it’s frustrating we have to test like this when others don’t. The docs I work with said they have to do some kind of test too (are they mistaken or is it just not a “high stakes“ test?). Around here it seems most jobs want NPs 😒. Many NPs (and DNPs 🙄 ) I work with did A LOT of their training online. I could write a book on complaints about that. Good luck, y’all!

    I took the pilot. It sounds like they didn’t change much from the pilot. Except being able to bank questions (good idea)and it’s 3 years! I thought 2 years was awful long. But great review of what to expect Michelle.

    • @TheMedicineCouch
      @TheMedicineCouch  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Kim! Well, technically the test is only two years. You just have to pass 8 quarters. however, they give you 12 quarters in total. So, you have some quarters that you can fail or just skip if you want. My goal is to do the test every quarter and pass in the first eight, so I can be done with it!

    I agree 100% that this recertification test with its high stakes does not prove or disprove knowledge base. It's just another nccpa means of fleecing a profession and actively lobbying state legislatures to tie certification to state licensure. They also lobby the insurance industry to require recertification. The benefits nccpa bring to our profession are negated by the money grab from the high stakes recertification tests. It's not attracting new candidates to P.A. programs, unfortunately.

    • @TheMedicineCouch
      @TheMedicineCouch  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, there are many PAs calling for this test to go away, or at least the high-stakes aspect of it. Interestingly, many MDs are also lobbying for their board exams to change or be dropped as well.

    I am SO SO very grateful I found your channel! Following your advice through and through! It seems the only current bummer is the long questions wasting part of the 5 mins.. Do you have any advice on what types of things to focus on when googling? I don't expect there to be buzzwords really so I'm wondering what to concentrate on. Also, so far what I've decided is to open and store 5 questions at a time (by the way you can open the 6th just not store it)... perhaps listen to the SmartyPANCE lectures for those topics only beforehand and then keep moving forward like that. The blueprint for the smaller % topics lets you know whether or not to focus on treatment vs just H&P / Diagnosis which does help in some cases. I'm likely overthinking this but like some of the others I have been in specialty for years and am also trying to be cautious. Thank you so much again! I love this channel!

    • @TheMedicineCouch
      @TheMedicineCouch  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much Deanna! I'm glad you like the videos. It's really hard to give advice on how/what to Google. What I would suggest is finding some long scenario practice questions and try to Google different words or phrases you can pull out, noting which ones worked the best. After you do 5 or 10 practice ones like this, you should have a better idea of what works for you that you could apply towards the test. As far as your strategy goes, that may work on some of the smaller blueprint sections, but it would be really hard to review all the elements for most of the sections. I would focus on getting really familiar with your resources (again through practice questions). Practice searching in SmartyPANCE and know what all they offer on the site. Then just dive in and give some of the questions a go. Even if it's just 2. I really think once you start, some of the nerves will dissipate! I haven't really practiced medicine much in the past 3 years. I had to search for the answer / or for verification for most of my answers, but it worked out. I only missed 2. So, I think you can do it!

    Thank you! I currently have the AAPA HIPPO program. It seems good for studying, but not easy for test taking- specifically, the SEARCH function is not user friendly. And, you cannot bring up one subject, i.e. Infectious Disease and have that as the sole subject to search. You have to search the entire program (i.e. drug through all the Blueprint subjects, so if you search the word fever and you're answering an ID question, you get drug through all the modules (e.g. CVS, RHEUM, etc) . In smarty PANCE, can you isolate search in each module alone, and not be drug through the entire database?

    • @TheMedicineCouch
      @TheMedicineCouch  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! SmartyPance recently launched that feature. You have the option to search across the entire entire blueprint, or you can search through just a blueprint category.

  • @Mike-ww5fk
    @Mike-ww5fk 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I agree. High stakes recertification tests are not used in any other profession. It's a financial stranglehold on our profession by the nccpa. Many students are considering the p.a. profession, opt out for a much more recertification friendly, less potential career ending highly intense exam. This will be my last unnecessary exam. I will retire after 35 years of practicing in orthopaedics. 90% of these questions are irrelevant in my specialty. That's why we refer to specialty providers. Just my opinion. Thanks for panre-la advice.

    • @TheMedicineCouch
      @TheMedicineCouch  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I feel that it’s a test that either needs to be complete take-home and not high stakes or just needs to go away. We already have a crazy high CME requirement. That should be enough to demonstrate that we are keeping our medical knowledge fresh.

      Thanks Anne! I agree that ChatGPT is not the best resource. I've listed all the resources I recommend in the description box below the video, with links to those products. I've also made several videos about the PANRE-LA and share all the tips I have. Well, maybe except one. When I took this last quarter, I made a point of reading the last sentence of the question stem first. That helped me because if I knew exactly what they were wanting to know, I was able to pull out the relevant points from the rest of the question stem as I read it. That seemed to save me a lot of time.

      As I mentioned in the video, I was able to find several answers using SmartyPance, but not most or all of them. I'm not sure if any 1 resource would allow for you to find all of them. Google is great because you have the ability to have access to thousands of sources, but then you have to weed through the results. I just purchased the $80 version of smarty pance thinking I wouldn't need the reel dx videos with the $100 version. Do you recommend the additonal picmonic upgrade or any other upgrades I'm not aware of yet with it? I'm not going into the test cold turkey and going to do some practice work with the site and wondering if you think picmonic is overkill. Thanks for you helpful YT content.

    • @TheMedicineCouch
      @TheMedicineCouch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brad. I think it really depends on how you learn. With the $80 version you get quite a lot, but it's mostly pearls that you read through and practice questions. There is access to Picmonic with that level, which is good for visual learners. If you feel like you learn better through scenarios with real patients, then the ReelDx portion may be helpful to get. So, I don't think you would go wrong with either, but think about your learner style and that may help you decide. Thanks for watching!

    I graduated from the USC PA program in 1979 paying $1500 for the program. In the 40+ years I've been a PA there has been times when I wasn't certified because I didn't feel the exam proofed my competence in my field of work so I shined it. Then I wanted to apply for other jobs that required national certification took the exam and passed...pain in the bum. I echo same sentiments as the the presenter. At this point I recommend if someone is thinking about being an advanced provider I recommend the NP route. Nurses for sure are backed from a much greater position of power compared to PA's and don't have to go through this baloney of recertification.

      It's just like putting them on "hold". Basically, if you don't like the content section it comes from, you can bank it and move on to the next questions. The dashboard will show you what questions you have banked. (Of course, you never get to see the question itself before you have to answer it.) You can bank up to five and come back to them later. I don't know if it's a super helpful feature, but I guess some people may find it helpful if they just want to avoid all questions from a certain blueprint topic until they can study that topic more.
