  • The Honda Pilot is now larger, and more rugged with a dedicated off road trim called "Trailsport". We got one for review, and it had a fault we've never seen before. Otherwise, we drove it on road and off to see if Honda has differentiated its soft-roader from its mini-van. Join us or a Test Drive!

    My wife bought a White trail sport last week. I have driven it over 300 miles. Took it on an old logging road this past weekend -pot holes and gullies. The trail sport did fantastic. Handled all I threw at it like a champ. It’s NOT for crazy rock scrambling, but, it’s called Trailsport.

    Saw a sky blue one with the bronze package at the gas station today and it made me do a double take. I want one so bad.

    This is the right direction for the Passport and Pilot. It's much more capable vs the predecessors, NA V6, great color and looks. The AWD system is a snow and ice monster.
    If it were me I'd spend the extra money and go for the new Land Cruiser, but this is going to carry more people and be more comfortable.

      The new Land Cruiser is a Land Cruiser in name only. It is no longer the real king of off-road. It's a fugazi.

    Trailsport can send up to 75% of the power to the rear. All the other trims are 70%.
    Hopefully a bulb goes off they send up to 90+% to the rear🙃 and revisit doing a hybrid with the v6.
    The Pathfinder was it for me, the CX-90 didn’t meet my family needs with 3rd row space. The Pilot snatched top spot after my mechanic said test drive one. Handles much better. Entire family loved it. Anytime I have 8 in the vehicle (6 adults, 2kids ), one comment my friends make is “I never thought inside was so spacious”.

    I test drove a '23 in EX trim. I liked it. I'm a big guy, and it was noticeably more roomy in driver space than many of its competitors. The 3.5 surely wasn't a V8 but also didn't feel anemic. A few weeks later I compared Grand Cherokee, Atlas Cross Sport, and Passport Trailsport, all 3 V6 AWD... Of the three, I felt like the Honda had the best acceleration. The Grand Cherokee felt cramped and I don't know what's happened to the pentastar over the last 5-6 years but that one felt like it was going to come apart. The Cross Sport outdid the Honda by far on styling interior and exterior. Its VR6 was pleasantly smooth in power delivery without much need (but seemingly also not much desire) to rev high but the Honda's V6 just felt more ready able to get up and go. The Pilot looks a lot nicer than the Passport but both have really dated and extraordinarily bland interiors. After a lot of thinking about it, I ended up getting the VW but probably could have been almost as happy with either Honda (the Passport was much more interesting to me than the Pilot but between styling and not-quite-enough legroom in the higher trims, I swayed toward VW... I hope I don't come to regret that)

    With all their conversation about the Trailsport’s rough road capability, which I enjoyed, why didn’t they take it on some rough roads? I’ve seen a few reviews showing the Trailsport doing stuff I would only have thought possible in a real off-road vehicle, such as my Toyota 4Runner. The Trailsport seems like an excellent compromise for folks who want to get to trailheads for day hikes in the back country, such as in the Sierras.

  • @aroundomaha

    I don’t care about off-road but the Pilot is on my short list of candidates over choices such as the GV70. A normally aspirated V6 is one of the reasons.

    This is the first video I've seen on these new Pilots. I saw one on the road and thought immediately "It's a Honda Grand Cherokee WK2".
    I would definitely buy this over a Grand Cherokee for the reliability factor alone. I also like in this trim that there is some sidewall on those tires. I'm so tired (lol) of seeing these supposed "off-road" SUV's with comically sized wheels with itty bitty tires.

    As a Trailsport owner, I can vouch for just about everything here. My key complaints: the transmission is VERY rough when it’s new. The shifting is terrible. Also, it really needs air-height adjustment suspension to really be awesome. As it is, it’s great, but if I could lift/lower it as need it would be perfect. Oh, and a hybrid would be a good idea…. I’m averaging 20mpg.

    I have a 2014 Honda pilot awd touring and this new pilot has nothing I care enough about to trade it in for. Honda please add a hybrid v6 so I can trade mine in. After 130,000 miles my pilot has averaged 20.3 mpg. I would like better please.

    Hey Honda, if I have a Trailsport, I want a bench middle seat because guess what? We want to put all the seats down and have a completely flat floor with no holes in it (i.e., middle seat missing from 2nd row) so that when we go off-road, we could sleep in the back. Trailsport owners don't care about captain's chairs, that's the touring and elite owners. But we do want the ventilated seats you keep from us in the Trailsport. Stop taking the choices away from us and GIVE US the choices to build what we want. Your vehicle selection system at dealerships sucks. This is what makes me want to go to Toyota or Nissan or Lexus.

    • @iosifkovalenko8364
      @iosifkovalenko8364 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would also want ventilated seats. But also understand that if Honda focused more on customization, then prices would go up so we would get less for our $.
      I would love a trail sport elite model with all the bells and whistles.
      I was on the waitlist for a gx 550, but with all the v6 twin turbos failing on toyotas, i decided on the naturally aspirated v6 from honda.

  • @jimmythefish
    @jimmythefish 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thinking about one of these. I have a 2011 Honda Odyssey that has served us well but I want AWD for skiing and ground clearance for when I go fly fishing and I have to drive rough logging roads. I want to be able to tow a teardrop trailer without stress.
    I like the second row captain’s chairs because we often leave the middle out of our Odyssey for the ski bag down the middle.
    This is way more comfortable and practical than a 4Runner; hard to justify the Toyota if you’re not hard core off-roading.
    I’d love a hybrid but our second car is a Nissan LEAF and we use that most of the time around town. I’m not using a lot of fuel generally.

  • @dirtandhappiness2023
    @dirtandhappiness2023 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    They really need to add air suspension to this to really give it real offroad chops. The i-VTM4 system is AMAZING, the vehicle just needs better ground clearance and some better damping to really go overlanding. It's SOOO close...

      @theCycleReport 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @matteugenio I'm absolutely not sure. They have an all new vehicle here with a new powertrain. It could've absolutely been a turbo 4 hybrid setup but clearly they stuck with a revised v6. I doubt they'll do it at all honestly since they went so far and would've led with the first model year of this gen with a game changer mpg setup.

      I drove mine on the Goodyear Eagle Touring all-seasons. Solid and confident. Impressed even my boss who has a 21 Highlander and learned we were on all-seasons. Passed everyone as they were driving slower than I, including 2 vehicles that went into hwy ditches (1 was some jeep the other turned over).
      Do a review in the winter with snow. Just floor it and launch and you will feel the rear, turn off traction control and … 😁 Will try again once a other storm comes.

    • @TestDriveVideos
      @TestDriveVideos  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As mentioned in the review, the problem was traced to a bad cell on the car battery. Not a common issue, but a new battery that is faulty is not impossible and not a Honda specific problem. Once it returned with a new battery it ran fine for us. If it works for you, we expect this to be a good vehicle - Honda's making great products right now. Thanks for watching!

      @@TPeaceD Interesting. In Canada the Trailsport comes with the hitch but no wiring/plug.

      The last generation was soft in both styling and feel, which made it a tough sell over Hondas excellent minivan. Minivans are the best people haulers but suffer from a soft perception and reputation - most SUVs succeed because they seem more rugged and capable. While generation doesnt have a lot of new tech, it adds that rugged feel and some more cabin space. Thanks for watching.

      They have higher profit margins. That's all there is to get. Fleet emissions regulations and marketing/propaganda has helped to ensure their preference amongst consumers, and intentional design choices are made to reduce interest in smaller cars (particularly poor packaging, limited options, mediocre drivetrains) while trucks and SUVs have become the preference of the image-conscious.
