ORIGINAL INFO: The power is ON! …Perhaps someone should shut that off. It’s running up the electrical bill.
RUMINATIONS: The “another episode of Mobile Suit Gundabridged” thing is a reference to something I had done for April Fools’ Day of that year - an episode of an abridged series that did not exist (featuring some wonderful voice talents from Elite 3, Team Four Star, and Little Kuriboh). It’s never going to get posted to youtube since it’d get contentIDed immediately, but the reason why the reference is here in particular is because I labeled it as a History of Power Rangers episode for the movie. People were actually quite upset that it WASN’T History of Power Rangers, which is understandable since at the time they were coming out so far apart, but I had already stated that I wasn’t going to do one on the movie and I’ve stuck to that. Although it’s also the reason why I incorporated the introduction video into the first season video when I did the re-edit for youtube - people apparently never watched the Introduction video. Still, I figured reviewing the movie adaptation on Atop the Fourth Wall would sate people, since it’s close enough to the movie that it’d be like reviewing it on History of Power Rangers anyway.
Timing wise, May was becoming a big month for me. Aside from a convention or two that I had to do, I had just released the second DVD (hence my shilling of it at the end), but also the brand spankin’ new website. I had used a blogspot for 5 years of the show, but I was never happy with it once the show began to expand. The year before was when I had launched the “Please Let the Ads Play” video, and while people claim that it somehow destroyed me or resulted in a huge loss for me, the truth was that it INCREASED monetizable views - people had actually shut off or whitelisted their adblockers from it, and that was great!
The problem was that in the year since then… viewership was down. It wasn’t because of the ad video (or if it was, it apparently took people a year to realize, “Hey, I’m mad at him!” since there was no immediate drop in viewers), but rather just a changing of the times. Viewership was STAGNANT. It’s building again, but it’ll be much better once we’re all caught up on the reuploads. But no, the stagnation, as I see, has been a result of a view factors:
-No new Channel Awesome Anniversary movies. One of the motivators for me to do my own movie was that the anniversary films gave something for the fanbase to get excited about, to speculate about and get them watching old and new material. With no big event to build towards, people were less interested in binging old content or the like.
-Crappy ability to watch old material. For all the flack Channel Awesome’s website design has gotten (and much of it is deserved), people forget that the old Channel Awesome layout was even worse - essentially just a text link farm aside from the scroller, but with no context for older material if people wanted to check it out. Any newcomers stumbling across the site would be turned off by the layout and head elsewhere, meaning no new viewers coming in to watch my old stuff and get hooked. My own website being a blogspot meant that it wasn’t conducive to watching old episodes or even finding something that looked interesting by scrolling through the list.
-Market saturation. Now online video is different from broadcast television or movies simply because if you don’t want to watch something right now, you don’t have to - there are no competing time slots where people MUST watch my show instead of someone else’s. However, as more reviewers came into prominence, people had less time to watch ALL the shows they wanted to watch. It was already a problem on Channel Awesome (and people say it’s STILL a problem), but now very talented people were coming about on other platforms away from CA and not necessarily seeking out our stuff anymore.
Spoony, the Nostalgia Critic, James Rolfe, and others had grown independently popular thanks to having a place where one could easily find their material and watch it. And since Channel Awesome’s site redesign was dragging its feet (long story there why that took so long to happen), I decided to work on this on my own. Other reviewers pointed me in the direction of The Engineer, a frequent guest and collaborator of Bennett the Sage and occasional voice actor, artist, modeler, and in this case: web designer. Over the course of a month or two we hammered out everything I wanted for the site, I paid him, and we finally launched the day before this episode hit.
The Frog in Japan is a reference to the Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya, a reference completely lost on the west for at least a decade when it was loosely woven into the plot of well...Naruto. I feel for Adam/Johnny, having to be a damn frog.

Fitting as Ninja Black from Kakuranger, the sentai that both season 3 of MMPR and the movie was based on, was named Jiraiya
And then referenced by name in Persona 4 when Jiraya was the name of a special Persona.

Funny story, the Blue Ranger's actor, David Yost actually is gay in real life. I know Linkara knows this because of History of Power Rangers so I love the meta-reference there.

the only part of the Fred subplot I liked in the film was the total anarchy the kids were reaking while the adults were zombified. it was like pleasure island, sans the whole donkey bit.

Ooze is oddly sincere and grateful to his rescuers for a cartoonish villain. I mean, he changes his tune like 5 minutes later, but still...
I always wondered why they never used the movie suit as the Metallic Armor for the 3rd season. Now I know.

As an older MMPR fan who was (do the math) years old when the original movie came out and also bought the comic when THAT came out, I must concur with Linkara. This was a far from perfect adaptation of an even less imperfect movie.
The movie itself is a guilty pleasure of mine (I saw it a few times as a kid)
The Tengu were a great villain design, I liked the new Zords, and Ooze was hilarious
The movie is alright as a film but as a power rangers property its pretty good

Now the episode alluded to in HOPR Revised MMPR Season 1 has a TH-cam link! AND what timing AGAIN as the Power Rangers reboot movie has FINALLY begun filming, with Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G, and Naomi Scott as Jason, Billy, Zack, Trini, and Kimberly and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa! It's due for release in about 54 weeks. March 24th 2017. Also, Pokemon Sun and Moon were announced two days prior to the start of the Power Rangers movie's filming. Daaaaamn Linkara, your timing is great!

So if the Tengu warriors found Kars in spaces and he landed on Earth, that means when the rangers finally got back Kars already enslaved it.
I remember seeing the movie stills comic version at school when I was a kid. I was thrown off when they used the Shogun Megazord in it. I thought it was cool and thought I missed that in the movie. When I saw it in the show, I lost my mind.

I thought the new movie was really good, despite its own share of flaws. It's a movie I'd gladly re-watch because I genuinely enjoy it, instead of this movie where even as a kid I tended to stop watching after they lost their powers.
I agree. It was exactly what I expected from a big-budget theatrical Power Rangers movie. Silly and entertaining, but taking itself just seriously enough to get you to take it seriously.
I still remember getting to see an advanced screening of the movie. Went with a couple of my friends, and we had a blast!

I still like this movie even years later, I don't remember seeing it in theaters (if I did, I was too young to remember) but I did own it on vhs and still love it today, I've even been picking the new legacy movie figures which actually depict the rangers in their movie suits!
Still not sold on the Movie Legacy White Ranger Morpher and Falconzord, think I'll wait for the inevitable Legacy Ninja Megazord.

Considering MMPR: The Movie is in an alternate dimension maybe this dimension history is different than the main dimension's history.
Speaking as a movie nut, I also don't speculate on a hypothetical movie that either doesn't have a release date or isn't even in development. I'm more of a "wait and see" kind of person. On that note, I'm really excited to see the Power Rangers reboot scheduled to come out in March.
How was it
You know I really do dislike the "I'm a frog" now a days. Especially because I've become so interested in Japanese culture, and the significance of frogs and ninjas in the legend of the ninja Jiraiya.
I actually know a little at least about the cast. #1 Elizabeth Banks will be playing Rita. #2 the "Teenagers" Will actually be played by younger actors. #3 they fixed the accidental casting of a Black Guy as the Black Ranger, and an Asian woman as the Yellow Ranger. The Black guy will be playing the Blue Ranger instead, i'm not sure if they cast an asian girl for anyone yet, i sort of skimmed IMDB for it.

When I first watched this I remembered being kind've pissed that Ivan took down Zedd & Rita so easily. I mean, doesn't Zedd lead an intergalactic empire? It's stupid that after all this time, they finally have the potential to give Zedd & Rita a really big victory and they wasted it. Giving the victory instead to a no-name lame villain.
To be fair being a leader does not necessarily make you a great fighter or the most powerful ...especially as if I recall he inhenrited the empire from his father in Law
Message from 6 years in the future: the 2017 Power Rangers movie did NOT do well. They tried to do The Breakfast Club/Ferris Bueller schtick for most of it and then suddenly pivoted to Michael Bay's Power Rangers right at the end.
I was fine with the former and annoyed with the later. Not a horrible movie but a lot held it back.

I like the movie. It loses some of the charm of the show with the CGI robots and monsters by the end and I wish Zedd and Rita played a bigger part, but, overall, I think it’s a fun movie that’s more or less a big budget version of a multi-parter you’d get from the show.
Also the Morphin Time scene is awesome. Hyped when I saw it as a kid and still hyped seeing today.

Krispy Kreme is as magical in power Rangers as Tahiti in Agents of SHEILD 😊 um the 2017 movie was my most recent exposure to this franchise and I remember enjoying it.

+Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall I own four different versions of the MMPR Movie comic. One is the photo comic and one is the illustrated comic as a whole story. The remaining two comics are the illustrated comic with the story split into a part 1(like you own) and part 2 (which you are missing). I agree with you it is strange considering, that I can confirm to you, that the "Part 1" and "Part 2" comics were sold poly-bagged/bundled together, which defeated the purpose of splitting them in the first place. The "whole" comic and "Part 1" comic look nearly identical (except for the illustrated movie logo vs. the actual movie logo). "Part 2" also uses the actual movie logo like "Part 1", but it has two other significant changes when compared to the "whole" and "Part 1" covers. The first is the pink-cream circle that states it is the official adaption. Instead of a pink circle with cream letters and a cream border, "Part 2" has a cream circle with pink letters and a pink border. The second major change, the picture of the Rangers busting out of the comic's cover on "Part 2" has the Rangers in their Ninjetti outfits, not their Ranger outfits.
Incidentally, I just watched your Gokaiger review for the first five episodes and you mention how the anniversary being celebrated by Gokaiger was off by a year as Sentai began in 1975. I was wondering when you came to that conclusion did you take into account that they may have only been counting years in which Sentai actually aired on TV towards the anniversary. If you didn't know, in 1978 they took a year off from airing Sentai to air Toei's adaptation of Spider-Man instead. That could explain the discrepancy.
That ninja frog thing makes a lot more sense in Japanese folklore.

Though maybe if Adam trained on mount Myaboku we might get the first power ranger sage.

I wouldn't say the Fred subplot was completely superfluous, it was his dad and the other parents that dug up Ivan's two machines, after all, so there had to be SOME scenes to explain the dad getting there
I think I found the answer to question on about the comic. There were at least FOUR versions of the comic. One was a comic shops only full adaptation. Newstands not got a two issues miniseries. (Same material.) Movie theaters and Toys R US gave an incomplete version of the movie comic before it came out. (Toys R Us was quite friendly with Marvel at the time. They had quite a few promotional comics over the years. They did a TERRIBLE X-Men comic, a crappy Spidey comic when he got a show, etc.)

To be honest, I know the movie has a ton of flaws and has not aged well, but I still like it. But mostly as just a guilty pleasure due to my nostalgia of watching it a lot as a kid. I don't watch it a lot, but I will when I feel like it. Besides, I much rather watch the movie over Megaforce and Operation Overdrive ANY day! I'm excited for the new movie coming out soon tho! :D

+Grant Wilson no, cause I actually like Samurai. I'll admit it's not the best and it is pretty weak, but I still found some enjoyment of it. And I felt the characters and their relationships between each other were believable enough to make me like them. I wouldn't call it bad or great. I say it was just ok. It's at least better than Megaforce by a long shot.

I don't know if someone noticed, but also in the first teleportation at the beginning of this comic, Tommy's teleportation light is green instead of white. Linkara forgot to tell that. Probably at the time he finished this, he noticed but was too late, since it's a hell of a job to edit videos. Other than that, nice job Linkara.

I myself ain't one for thinking about who would play what in a new movie either! I'd be more interested in the plot & whether I found it entertaining! I get some people have there ideas for potential actors but I prefer not to speculate!

Like, right, and now are all single syllable words. He's not saving any time by abbreviating that to L.R.N. unless he's savvy to the fact his words are actually text.
I don't know where else to put this very long discussion, so I'll just put it here. I have scene at least a few episodes from both the Ranger Season and Sentai Season of every Power Rangers, so BASED ON MY OPINION (AND YOU DON"T HAVE TO AGREE WITH ME), this is how I feel about each:
1. MMPR1=Zyuranger (both are really good on their own, and where 1 has faults the other does slightly better).
2. MMPR2>Dairanger (good effort to cover up the change in rangers and Lord Zedd is an iconic/original villain, plus I feel that like Jetman, Dairanger is a bit overrated).
3. MMPR3/Alien RangersOhranger (Zeo is the stronger season overall).
5. TurboMegaranger (Saban went all out with this season and the space travel was done well, plus I didn't feel as strong about the Megaranger cast or villains).
7. Lost Galaxy=Gingaman (I love both shows, the nature theme of Gingaman may not have been carried over, but the original story from Lost Galaxy was good, plus Terra Venger was awesome).
8. Lightspeed Rescue=GoGoV (I give props to Saban for the original 6th ranger, but GoGoV had the stronger villains and story).
9. Timeforce>Timeranger (By just a little bit, I feel that Timeforce's rangers were not as great as Timeranger's, but the villains and story were better and having the main villain surrender was something different for either show).
10. Wildforce=Gaoranger (The rangers in Gaoranger were better, but the villains of Wildforce were better, though neither are either series' best).
11. Ninja StormAbaranger (Again, just a little bit, mainly the villains from Dino Thunder, but the rangers on both sides were equal to me).
13. SPD=Dekaranger (I liked the rangers in Dekaranger but the A-Squad in SPD was agood twist, and the stories were different yet equally good).
14. Mysticforce
I suppose I agree with you on most fronts, but I refuse to watch most of the Sentai because all that Japanese would probably give me a headache.
