2024 Yamaha YZ250X 2-stroke test ride

  • This was my third demo ride of the 2023 Corduroy Enduro weekend and the test course was starting to get pretty chewed up an deeply rutted on the steepest uphills an a few downhill sections.
    I like Yamahas in general and I love their excellent KYB suspension but I didn't like this bike as much as I thought I would. For one thing, a previous tester fouled the spark plug and it was difficult to start right from the beginning with only a kick starter. It got a bit better as I rode it but it didn't feel like it was running crisply and I dislike not having an electric starter. It also seemed like the jetting was a bit off or the power valve was gummed up or not set correctly at higher RPM. The engine also seemed too much like a motocross engine to me; peaky and high RPM required rather than the broader power and lower end grunt of my much smaller engined Husqvarna TE150. This would be a great bike for a faster rider but I found it more difficult and tiring to ride than my TE. Even with not being used to this bike yet not withstanding, I think I am faster on my 150 even using less energy.

    I can't live without a start button. Greatest thing ever. The woods is not where the YZX wants to be. It's more of an open terrain bike.

      @mdsnrr  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree. I think it's intended for faster, more open GNCC-type but electric start would make it more versatile. There are times when it's very muddy or you're in an awkward position on a side hill or in rocks where it's much more difficult to use a kick starter than when you're on a track or open trail. There are a lot of things to love about this Yamaha but not having a start button holds it back.

    Man if they actully had that YZ setup correctly, flywheel weight, tuned right and a actully plug that hadn't been fouled you would have had a complete different experience. I mean Jesus, not much else could have been wrong!

      I think you're correct about all of that. It probably also starved for air from a very dirty air filter. It was very dusty that day and the previous day but they probably didn't swap it out for a clean one like they did on the 4-stroke because it isn't as easy on the 2T.

    3:04 prime example of running lean, revs out instantly. everyone saying fouled plug but there’s no smoke coming out exhaust / starts within 2 kicks. Also people saying the air filter is dirty, this bike is getting too much air, not enough oil 7:48

    • @mdsnrr
      @mdsnrr  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It took over five minutes of hard kicking to get it to start the first time. I just didn't include that in the video. Also, more oil in your premix makes the bike run MORE lean, not less. More oil = less gasoline = leaner. Less oil = more gas = richer. (If the jetting stays the same.)

      It's definitely aimed at faster, more open trails and terrain for sure. But I think someone younger, less tired out, more fit, and probably a bit more skillful could have made it perform better on that day than I did -- even with the chewed up course.

    How does the 250x compare to the fx curious with it being lighter and 18” for a nimble woods bike.

    • @mdsnrr
      @mdsnrr  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Both are really nice bikes and both are made for the woods with 18" rear wheels, side stands, different gearing, etc. compared to their motocross 2T and 4T counterparts. That being said, I actually liked the 4T FX better than the 2T X. This really surprised me a lot because I have a 2017 YZ250FX and I don't like it for tight woods. I have mainly been riding a 2023 Husqvarna TE150 this year and I find it so much better for me in the single track trails than my older FX. So, I though the 250X would be the best of both worlds: great Yamaha KYB suspension and Nissen brakes but now with the agility, smoothness, and light feeling of a 2-stroke. But it didn't turn out that way for me. I found the power deliver of the X too much like a motocross bike and too high-RPM biased. I also disliked it not having electric start for certain situations while already on the trail. I was also very surprised by the 4-stroke FX but in a good way. It seems much more nimble than my older generation FX and it seems to have smoother poewer delivery and revs very easily and cleanly from low through mid and up to the higher RPMs. It is also much slimmer feeling and easier to move around on. This newer FX is noticeably lighter than my older one and because of the power delivery, feels about the same or better than the X. A lot of the above though relates to me as an old guy. A much younger rider might like the hard hitting acceleration and peakiness of the X. For me though it's more tiring to control in tight woods and rough, rocky uphills and therefore starts to feel heavier. So, I guess it would depend a lot on the rider/racer. I hope this answers your question. Another way to put it is that the 2T KTM 150 XC-W felt more like the 4T Yamaha YZ250FX than it did to the 2T Yamaha YZ250X when I rode all three on the same day on the same test course.

      They're both great I've rode both if you're a newer rider go with the fx the 250x has a but load of power it's all there when you barley move the throttle you have to tractor that thing everywhere to get it to preform where it's controllable don't get me wrong if you gear it differently. Put a new head/spark plug in it and a new cdi box I think it'd do absolutely amazing but if you're new and wanna ride a 2 stroke that'll teach you something go with the 125x me personally it I had to pick between the 250x or fx I'd go with the fx simply bc it lugs it's easy to ride it just doesn't have the grunt the 250x does

      It wasn't on purpose. The main issue was that the spark plug was fouled from some previous demo riders. The other issue is that lately I've been more used to torquier, more low end power band bikes and a lighter clutch which would have been easier on my old arthritic hands in the deep silt and sand -- especially on the tight steep uphills. This bike would be better for someone younger on a faster course.

    man i'm going to be completely honest with you. being a demo bike i believe that it was jetted lean and they obviously had the idle cranked to a minimum. i mean the bike died after like 3 whole seconds in neutral on you. clearly they were trying to get this to put out as much power as possible for a demo. but you gotta click into 3. i know its a new bike you're not comfortable on, and it was dusty and you were trying to let the dust settle in some sections but you're banging that thing at the top of 1/2nd from the first turn to the last. gotta click 3rd and clean that thing out when you get the oppertunity. gotta clutch in and give it some revs in the slow stuff. this is why the plug is fouling/getting wet. i'm not familiar with your channel, but don't worry i'm going to check out some of your other videos now because your footage looks great, but sometimes being in a high gear at lower rpms is better than a lower gear at high rpm. there's a difference between being "on the pipe" and "tang tang tang because there's no gear left"

    • @mdsnrr
      @mdsnrr  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That bike might have been jetted lean because it was very pipey but there were several things going on for that ride beside the deep silt and deep uphill ruts. That was my third demo ride back to back to back and all the kicking on this 250X kind of wore me out a bit before I even started and then once I did start, it would surge and felt like it would get away from me. I might have been in first gear for a few of the tighter corners in the tight sandy sections but most of the rest was probably 2nd and 3rd. I do look pretty slow (even for a sexagenarian) looking back at this video a few weeks later but I was also trying to be careful so I wouldn't hurt or strain myself the day before the main event the following day. This bit from the next day is more like how I ride on a bike that I've set up for myself and I'm comfortable on: th-cam.com/video/7u8gvtEEcHA/w-d-xo.html. Or this: th-cam.com/video/SxxTGtUvAQc/w-d-xo.html . Or this: th-cam.com/video/vch4yV1TapY/w-d-xo.html . look man i just got back into riding after a decade off. i can't point the cardio or seat time finger at anybody, but i did watch your 2023 terra nova enduro, tosorntio test 2 video after commenting and you got the same issue. way tighter course, and in a decent amount of there's not much else you can do to get out of second. but there are alot of spots where you could drop that clutch and make her scream and make up .300 of a second here and there. i get it. your riding style is conservative and you're not wasting energy which is great. once again, i am in terrible cardio shape and getting back on a bike has showed that. i could smoke you in a 15 minute sprint but you'd have me by 15 minutes in a 2 hour race. my humble peanut gallery suggestion is work on gate drop starts -> implement that on hill climbs to get comfortable with dropping the clutching and sending it in second gear. and just dick around with some wheelies like you're 12. you use minimal amounts of clutch in your races, once again, awesome strategy for a 2-3 hour race, but there's just spots where you could blip, flywheel, and be into the next corner. you ride high in second way too often, when you could be lugging around in third with a ring finger pull on the clutch and a blip of throttle to keep her rolling. that being said i've been on a yz 250 for about 3 seasons now. i run it to 40:1 and she screams, but if dont give her some ting ting ting revs every now any then on the clutch in downhills or the 2nd gear rolling corners, it will drown the plug. they need a little more attention than the austrian tbi/tpi bikes and by attention i mean shakey shakey power being ready to let loose on the clutch pull @@mdsnrr

      @@georgewarshington1230 I've been mostly riding a TPI Husky 2T this year. I used to mainly race MX but gradually got more into off-road the past two seasons. Most of my recent races have been 2-hr XCs and I often started too hard and wore myself out way too quickly. Now I try to pace myself a bit better for the longer off-road races. I don't want it to sound too much like excuses but the Terra Nova wasn't my best race. It was my first time for this race and it was only my third enduro ever and my first in a few years. Conditions were pretty bad that day and that also played a part. Single digit temperatures and constant rain so I was cold, wet, and had poor visibility a lot of the time. Weather forecasts had predicted no rain until later in the day and I didn't have a rain jacket. (I just ordered one yesterday though!) So, I wanted to pace myself for a full day race and try to avoid crashes. I wasn't great on any of them, but the Tosorontio/Test 2 was my worst section of the day. Watching my videos later, I know I can go faster in pretty much any of the sections from that race but I don't know if I could maintain higher speeds for the whole race without crashing more. After 60 y.o., crashes lose more time for me than riding a bit more conservatively. I'm continuing to get better though.

      I completely agree. Properly set up, it would rip on an XC or Hare & Hound type race. The demo course that day was too slow and technical for that type of bike. The other problem besides not the best course and not being set up for it, was that the plug was obviously fouled. I didn't show it in the video but it took a LOT of kicking and around five minutes to get it started initially. Some of the riders that day were experinced riders looking to try some newer or different models but others were completely new to riding and didn't even have gear yet other than a helmet (running shoes instead of boots, no goggles, pants, or jersey, etc.) and girlfriends with some gear but not much experience. It's great to get new people into the sport but there should have been a second, milder course for those people. They must have been very frustrated stalling and falling so much.

      It probably had more than 20 rides over the three days; and some of the riders were probably not very experienced. Occasionally you can get a good used bike if you can ensure that it was properly maintained by a single owner but, like you, I wouldn't buy a demo dirt bike. For the past eight years, I've only bought new bikes. Way less hassle and not really much more expensive when you figure in repair costs and longevity/resale value.

      Other people on other bikes of this year and model seem to have found them to be very good but I think something was wrong with this one. Sand/silt sucked past the air filter and now lower compression? Sticking power valve? Fouled spark plug? Dirt in the carb? Extremely dirty air filter not letting the engine breathe? Maybe even a partial engine seizure by one of the previous demo riders??? I don't know what exactly was wrong but things didn't feel right. It wouldn't rev smoothly, stalled easily, and was hard to start. I grew up riding and racing 2-strokes and one of my current two bikes is a 2T so it's not like they're new to me. (All of my races this year were on the 2T.) The more I watch other videos for this bike and rewatch this video, the more apparent it is that things were wrong. There was only one YZ250X (and one each YZ125X and YZ250FX) for the three days of demo rides at this event and this one was probably not in the best shape by the time I got to try it -- even if it was set up correctly, which I don't know either. Look at the air filter they changed on the YZ250FX they changed just before I rode it (right after this 250X) and you can see how dirty it was. th-cam.com/video/jmhmWetZGrU/w-d-xo.html . I think the air filters got swapped frequently for the YZ250FX and YZ450FX demo bikes because it's easy to do on those bikes but it probably wasn't done enough (or at all?) on the 2T X bikes. This alone would be enough for the poor performance but I think there were other problems also that day with that bike.
