Try to sound very official, and rattle off something about "Station" or "Outpost" or something similar as an "office greeting"... like :
"Good afternoon, Sir/Ma'am, this is Station 1832, you have reached an unsecured line. Please state your business..."
This is (more or less) the official format for military stations around the world, so if you can manage an almost mechanically regimental voice like you've got no sense of humor, it's usually a panic-inducing answer nobody expects. They'll hang up before they even think about it... Like "Station what for who?"
With "Caller I.D." I enjoy the antics I can ensue... from "City Morgue, you plug 'em, we plant 'em... What can I do ya' for???" To singing stupid jingles for even stupider places of business and dumb-ass pop-culture references... "You can have anything you want... at Alice's Re-estaurant!" (Who the f*** is Alice?! shouted in the background is a plus)...
Sometimes I just pick up the phone and sit in silence... When asked for someone, unless I know who is wanted for a fact, they're always busy with my d*** in their mouth... OR I find something else they can be doing to break up the monotony... Sometimes it's just quiet a short time and then hangs up...
Wrong numbers and potential scammers are hilarious... I don't know how many times I've dared the IRS to come down and get me... or invited the poor idiot to squeeze blood out of turnips (because he'll get it faster than money out of me)... Even told a "Publisher's Clearing House Representative" to look out of his window... did he see the white van down the street... That was a police sting operation working on the line and video taping him and everything he was doing... (cue complete psychotic meltdown)... ;o)

I got added to a wedding planning group chat for some reason. When they discussed dress code I insisted I was coming in my thong and crop top, I'm a large man. When I was told maybe I shouldn't come I threatened that half of the family wouldn't come since you can't uninvite me now. After a few hours I apologized and told the crying bride I was a wrong number, I was sorry, and wished them all the best and a wonderful day. The chat cracked the hell up.... the bride did not lol.

So, one time I got a call, it was a girl, and they asked for someone sharing my name, and though I didn't remember her she said I had given her my number at a party that I had actually been at,. So I did the whole " oh yeah! Hey how are you!?" Thing thinking I had just been drunk and forgot, we started flirting and asked if I wanted to hang out, so of course I said yes. Well she gets to my house and knocks on my door, I open and she asks if "my name" is home, I say "I'm (my name)". She gets red in the face and says " oh, ummm... Your not the same (my name) that I met....", I apologized, told her that I thought I had just forgot meeting her when drunk and played along, Then we talk about the party we both went to, and figure out that it's all a coincidence, that somehow she just got the number wrong when writing it down and that happened to be my number.
Luckily when I said " well you are already here, would you like some coffee?" She said "might as well"
We ended up clicking and I asked if mabey she'd like to get dinner some time, then had a few months of a FWB relationship. It was great! She never ended up finding that dude, but we had fun and I ended up dating a friend of hers after we stopped seeing each other ( she totally set me up with a friend of hers I had met that had a crush on me, her friend and I dated for about a year)
It was pretty great. Never have I been that lucky since.

I kept getting calls from a doctor's office for a Hispanic patient (I don't remember her name), confirming her appointments. I called them back and told them to please stop calling me, they still kept calling me. So I blocked the number. Then they started texting me the appointment times and I sent a text each time back saying "STOP" as per the instructions in the text, and the last one I sent was a long winded rant about leaving me the f*** alone with "STOP" peppered through out. Haven't heard anything back since. 🤣

Some random lady once called me in french. I’m not fluent in french and could just about understand that she was telling me she was coming over, calling me some female french name. I’m not a woman btw. I said (in french) that she was calling the wrong number. I slowly and awkwardly told her this in bad, broken french in a man’s voice. Her response: “...*pause*...Yeah, so I’m coming over and...” followed by an even longer story that I couldn’t understand.
I tried to tell her again, but my french was so bad and so slow that she just listened for a second or two to - again - some random dude talking bad french, and then started talking over me again as if nothing happened. In the end I decided to let the woman she though she was calling repeat to her she had the wrong number and she’d been calling some dude that had no idea what she was saying.
Fun fact: Years later now I have a girlfriend most of whose extended family exclusively speaks french. Still can’t follow what they’re saying beyond their first sentence. Who knows, it might have been one of them calling me.

@8:00 Had something like this happen to me. My distant cousin, Jennifer called me out of the blue. She asked to speak to Ashley(me, we hadn't spoken for years) I said that was me. We chatted for a few minutes, then she asked about my mom. (Cringe) my mom had been dead for a year or two at this point. I broke the news to her & she freaked a bit. I went on to explain that her health had gotten worse & it was a year or two ago & she says, "Wait, what?! Is this Ashley **?" I said, "No, I'm Ashley *****." Turns out it was a wrong number. She was calling her niece(not cousin) to see how her mom was doing...the mom was in the hospital...& I just told this lady she was dead... Also, once got cussed out for stealing someone's man. It wasn't necessarily a wrong number, but it was completely random and a bit creepy. I was spending the night at a friend's house when I was maybe 11 years old. We were making prank calls in the middle of the night. In between calls, his phone rang. When he answered, the caller said a string of six numbers that later turned out to be the last six digits of my social security number. (I would not even receive my social security card until sometime after I turned 12.)

This happened recently. My parents still live in the dark ages and have a landline and one evening we're all sitting around when it rings. My mom picks up and this guy says something along the lines of "Random First/Last name, you're a lifesaver" and my mom assumes it's my weird uncle who calls sometimes when he's driving home from work and never introduces himself properly on the phone and that he's just messing with us so she tells my dad its his brother and my dad goes to pick up the private line in his office cuz this will probably be a long call. Then my mom turns back to the phone and the guy asks "Who's this?" and my mom decides to have a little fun of her own and puts on an accent and tells him she's the maid. The guy goes, "He has a maid?!?!" and my dad picks up the other line then so she hangs up giggling to herself and explains what the heck that was all about to us. Then my dad reemerges and we're all "woah that was fast" and my dad tells us that it was a wrong number and we all go "oh no." My dad has not been informed of the maid thing yet and is missing why we're all so horrified as he proceeds to tell us that it was actually some guy looking for someone to inform them of a death in the family. The whole exchange was like some sort of miscommunication trainwreck getting worse every time someone opens their mouth like something out of a sitcom. At least the guy got a bit of a chuckle out of it when my dad explained he had the wrong number but yikes, so awkward!

I've had a few of these, but three stick out.
When I was in high school, I received a text and then a pic. The text read, "Do you want a little SEAL in you?" and the pic was of a well muscled man standing shirtless and posing before a mirror. I told him the truth, that I did not particularly want 'a little SEAL' because I was a 15 year old boy. He promptly apologized and that was the end of it.
The second was a guy asking for a 'Rick,' and could he cover his shift at the store. I politely told him he had the wrong number, and that I was not Rick. He got upset, was quite adamant that I was, in fact, Rick, and to stop playing around and help him out. I told him again that he had the wrong number, that I was not Rick, and hung up. He called a few more times after that and left increasingly rude messages for Rick.
The third was this old woman asking for her granddaughter Emily to call her. I answered the first three of her calls. The first time she was apologetic and polite. The second she was a little annoyed, but she still apologized for bothering me. The third time she said she knew that I was Emily's 'asshole boyfriend' (her words) and that I needed to put Emily on right now or she'd call my parents on me. I was 22, did not know anyone named Emily, and told her as much. She insisted, and I just hung up. After that, I saved her number as Crazy Old Lady and, a couple of times a week, she'd leave longwinded voicemails talking about her day and asking about Emily's. This went on for about six or so months. About a week after the last call (it was about an outing the woman had gone on with some tourist group), I get a call from a number that was one digit off of mine. Turns out, Emily's grandmother had punched a wrong digit into her contact details and hadn't realized it.

So a few days later my 9 year old self called back and left a message saying in my 9 year old voice:

    OMG! Where do I start?
Had some old woman leave a 10 minute voicemail for her neice about some family drama. I called her back to let her know. BTW, my first name is on the outgoing message...not the same as her niece.
While in my hotel room in NOLA, my cellphone ran. There was alot of static, and I couldn't hear what the person was saying. I told them that I was hanging up and would call back. The number listed as the number it came from was, in fact, my cellphone number.
My name is clearly common. At one place of work, IT decided it would be funny to give a newcomer with the same name the extension 3610, when mine was 1036.
During college, I had a number that was one digit off the number for the local veteran's hospital. Old ladies can be really rude, when you tell them they have the wrong number. We would try to give them the correct number, they would call us liars. I had one leave a message on my answering machine (yeah, this was almost 30 years ago), don't know why she thought our stupid outgoing message was a hospital. She asked to have her husband dressed and ready by 1pm, as she would be there to pick him up. I just called the veteran's hospital and relayed the message.

New cell phone, got this strange call (it was still in my handbag at the time) picked it up, answered......could hear people talking, but no one would answer...One of my kids gave a funny laugh (in the same room as me) and then we realized somehow, my cell phone was "live" and I'd ...answered my own phone? Which had rung itself? Also, back in late March this year (2020) got some weird text messages from two of my kids. Slightly panicked, because...one of them was obviously upset. Phoned first one kid, then the other, and we figured out that these text messages were from back in 2011 or so. One of my kids could recall sending me text messages at that time, and me saying I didn't receive any such messages...well, they got here. Just a little late. And I got an email message from someone, who said "I just got your email message, but realized you sent this in 2010. But I only just got it, so here is my reply, but the forum was closed back in 2013." Out there, in the ether...are all our messages, just circling around waiting to land...

@@Kayenne54 The text messages and emails make sense. The weird thing with my phone was that there was no reason for me to hear a garbled voice coming through. The timing wasn't delayed, and the statements weren't the same length as what I was saying. It was literally as if someone were talking, but I couldn't understand what was being said, due to the static. It wasn't the only weird thing to happen in the hotel room. As it happened in NOLA, I am certain it was another attempt of the spirit in my room to get attention.

Back in the early 90's my landline number was very close to a 5 star hotel's number. I received wrong numbers almost daily, wanting room service, etc. One day I came home and someone left a message on my answering machine wanting me call him back so he could make a reservation. Since when does a 5 star hotel have an answering machine? He left an out of state number. I never called him back. Moved after living there for 2 years and demanded a new number.

So, back at my middle school, there was an elevator and you needed a pass to ride it. I’m blind, so I got a pass. On two separate occasions, someone called the elevator while I was riding it. The first time, it was a telemarketer. Second time, it was fucking 911. Both times, I got really bad anxiety and just didn’t say anything.

I remember in particular three wrong number calls I got years ago. I wasn't home for the first one but they left a rambling message on my answering machine about how well their kids did in school etc. That was definitely a wrong number; I have no idea who the caller or the kids she mentioned were. A second call was from a hospital. I told them the person they were calling for didn't live here and they must have the wrong number. They asked what my number was but I don't give out my number to strangers so I asked what number she dialed. It was indeed my number but their records clearly had the wrong number for the person they were calling. Another time I answered and a woman started rambling on about how they could see her if we paid the amount we owed (or something similar) and I said "See who? What the hell are you talking about?" She gave some girl's name and I told her nobody by that name lived here. She said "Oh I must have the wrong number" and I replied "Yes I think you do!" Incidentally that last incident brings up an unrelated matter. During a conversation if you refer to another person and it isn't clear who you are referring to don't simply refer to the person as him or her. So many times when people are talking to me they refer to "him" or "her" without making it clear who they are talking about, forcing me to ask. Don't assume the person you are talking to knows who you are referring to unless it is clear from context. They can't read your mind.

Not a wrong number, but wrong address. Maybe last summer, me and my brother were just hanging out at home. Around 8:30 or 9 p.m. we get a guy knocking on our door and hear him saying a name we couldn't quite catch. I know it's not the smartest thing but he wouldn't go away and we were afraid he'd try to break in. So I open the door and this middle aged dude is all demanding like, "Where's Harry!?"
I'm just like, "I think you got the wrong house man."
He apologized and just walked away.
He came back about a half an hour or so later and was calling his name again. So I opened up and he said this was in fact the correct address and that he just needed to talk to Harry and if he was home. I told him our family had been in this house for about 15 years now and he just goes, "oh" and leaves again.

I told her she would not be speaking to my sister with that attitude. She repeated for me to tell her the phone was for her and she wanted to know if she was bringing the alcohol and, again, called me an asshole.
    I hung up.

In the days of Land Lines Only- we had just moved into a new house in a new city for us. An elderly called one morning, asking for her friend [don't remember the name.] I explained that this is not her friend's number any more, and it was just assigned to us. We talked for twenty minutes or so. Through the months she would call our number and I would tell her: Mrs. XYZ, this is not your friend's number any more. However, she started sounding really out of it, either her health or her mind were not good, so I would just tell her 'wrong number.'
Several years later, we are in another new home, in another new city, and we kept getting calls for a Mental Health Clinic's Accounting department. The skeevy thing was, that clinic was in trouble for some scams and under investigation. I found the clinic and noticed the number was off by one from our phone number. When folks called me, I'd give them the other number. A few month later, I get a very strange call: "Are you the individual that keeps getting calls for the Mental Health Clinic.'
Yes, that's me. Uhoh. What did I do?
You gave them another wrong number that is a super secret no one knows and no one but specific individuals is supposed to call it. I think the number you want is.....
We both laughed at the situation.

This happened almost 20 years ago. One day, the phone rang, and I said hello and that was the last word I got out. Said man was cussing and saying that "Doug, you really f***ed up this time, you SOB and I am going to make sure you are f***ing fired.:" And this went on for almost 5 minutes, with this man cursing "Doug" every other sentence. When said man, finally ran out of air, I said this ins't "Doug", and that no such person lived here and that this was the "Howards" residence, and I could hear a intake of breath, and the man said, "Is this Heileg Meyers?" No, you have the "Howards' residence. Turns out, this was one of the 'bigwigs' from HM. He apologized and asked for my address. Several days later, I got a $500 GC to HM! Now for the fun part, the number this man called was exactly one number off from my home phone! Yes, "Doug' got fired. LOL

I was a long haul trucker, home on a weekend when a blizzard hit. The phone rings. It’s a dispatcher, calling for “Steve Kell”. A lot of people mispronounce my last name, it’s more like Kale. “Hate to bother you on a crappy weekend, but you have that 4WD Jeep Wrangler, right? And you live east of town? We have a driver that took his cab home, and he’s stuck in his own driveway. I’d send someone from the shop, but with the storm we’re short-staffed. Here’s the address- could you do me a big favor and see if you can help drag him out?”
I say sure and head for his address. The driver worked for a different company! They had a driver named Steve Kell who had a Jeep Wrangler, lived east of town, was home that weekend, and whose phone number was one digit different than mine. I helped a brother trucker out and was on my way.

He immediately calls me and is asking wtf is going on, explains the weird number. I'm confused but tell him to call this person back, make sure she's okay and see if there's any way he can help or just listen to this stranger. I got a call on our house phone around the time Lost came out, and it was just a series of numbers. Not the "Lost" numbers, different ones. I didn't buy a lottery ticket using the numbers, and I don't remember what they were any longer (I mean, this was a while ago) but I remember looking up and reading about "number channels" on CB Radios, and I wonder. I wish I'd star 69ed the number to find out who exactly called me or from where.
I also remember that my University had one of the last payphones in existence, and one day I was walking past it when it was ringing. So I answered it. There was a woman on the other end who was calling to receive the second half of payment on some pottery she had sold to a guy who had given her the number to call. She wondered if she had misdialed, so she hung up and I waited, and the phone booth rang again, so I told her it was bad luck.
A newspaper ad listed my roommate's number (printed the wrong number in the paper) on an ad for free Golden Retriever puppies, and for more than a week he kept getting calls about them, including some seriously strange ones in the middle of the night.

Every once in a while someone uses my email to sign up for something, TickTock and Khan Academy are the two most recent ones, I never clicked on verify email address and yet the account is linked automatically and without my permission. I've also been signed up for Minnesota employment notifications that was super annoying, like 20+ emails a day. I do account recovery to get into the account, change the password and wreck as much havoc as I can on the account I didn't ask for, didn't agree to, and didn't set up. I delete everything I can and put "fuck off" anywhere I can find to write in. There's now someone in a Minnesota employment database 1st name: Fuck, 2nd name Off. I never agreed to terms of service so good luck to them holding me to it. IDGAF.
I do this with wrong calls and spam calls too if they call more than once, first time is a misunderstanding and I'm polite, 2nd time IDGAF and start messing with them and act rude as hell to get my point across. Doesn't happen as much with calls since I can block numbers, therefore I can prevent the majority of my frustrations easily. However, there was a theatre in Toronto that thought I was a contractor and kept calling me from many different numbers which was the only major one. When they would call (repeatedly) I would start quoting Monty Python and calling them idiots who need to go back to elementary school to learn their numbers because they have the wrong one. Sometimes it's fun just to be a complete ass to people you'll never meet.

So I yell back bro its me, why you talking to your girl like that. Thats not ok. I had to tell him repeatedly it was me not his girlfriend cuz he heard a guys voice and was like who the hell is this?! Finally i get through and he calms down immediately like "oh hey bro was gud"
I told him that wasnt ok to yell at his girlfriend like that again, now hes mad at me, saying how i should have his back as his bestfriend and stuff. I just hung up... Never answered him again.
Texted a mutual to make sure his gf is ok and such. Tbh i have no idea what happened after. He apparently hates my guts now. Dodged a bullet i guess. But i feel bad for his gf and think he needs mental help

This is the reason my phone number’s area code isn’t the place I live, but is actually the area code for an entirely different state (and a very rural part of that state aswel.)

Got a call from a debt collector for a man named "redacted."
I told them I was not him and they had the wrong number.
The collector proceeded to spell "redacted"'s name in hopes that I would suddenly become him.
    I just hung up.

She wanted to know when my father would show up. I verified she was looking for
