Matt, wanted to ask whether you believe in using a Leitz E39 UV filter for the lenses you use. I always worry about scratches and dust getting on the front lens, so I make sure to get a quality filter. Some shooters say a filter cuts light/sharpness and some shooters say a filter is fine. Your thoughts on this? Thanks.❤😊
The Rokkor lenses are not bad wide open. I have the MC Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 and the MD 50mm f/1.2 (latest version). The MD is brilliant wide open. Cannot compete with a Summilux on an M, but on SLRs it's as good as it gets.
Matt, this is another wonderful job comparing so many lenses so quickly. You just have to be wide awake and pay close attention because you go so fast among them. That is *not* a criticism; if you didn't go that fast the video would be much longer, so we *thank you* for going so fast. I now find myself jumping immediately to your video each time I see that you've posted a new one. Thank you once again and keep up the great work.
Thanks Chris, yes most people watch for 6-8 mins regardless of the video length so I really tried to race through it (sorry). Still a long video. More videos coming for next few days with same format. 2 should be shorter. :)
..and yes I will use these videos as reference points for myself to when I need to remember how a lens performs. Time for breakfast then today’s video to make!
Hey! Yes it is a mammoth task even with just the basics compared for each lens! I have 2 more 50 videos coming as too much for 1 video. (I've shot the photos I just need to make the videos now!)
Hello Matt! I'm just wondering if you've gotten to try any version of the Summilux-R 50mm lens. May I also ask how the Voigtlander 58mm would compare to any of the Summicron-R 50mm lenses? Particularly at f2 and f2.8. Thank you!
Thank you Matt for another great video. I happen to own the voight 58 and usually don't shoot it at anything bigger than f2.8 for sharpness and overall image fidelity. I also have the voigt 35/1.4 Nokton, which isn't part of your video and similar story with it as well, closing down to f4 makes the images become brilliant. Your video made me aware that rangefinder camera lenses are also potentially adaptable, which I didn't know that their lenses could even be removed. Perhaps you could do a short video about that.
Thanks, ah stay tuned, the 35mm Nokton is coming! (Yes all Leica RF cameras have interchangeable lenses and most others from that period, any brand). Fixed lens RF cameras came later and are usually cheaper, not always. See my Olympus 35RC video as one example.
I took your advice and bought a Jupiter 8 (total price £44.72 with an M39 to LM adapter) Absolutely blown away with how good it is - focus is spot on (using a 7Artisans focus chart) and I didn't really expect that. The snaps I've taken so far have a fabulous render. Thanks.
I just pulled the trigger on a used m240 and have been watching all of your content trying to decide which 35mm and 50mm lens to start with. I’m leaning towards the ultron 35f1.7. Still not sure about the 50mm. Thanks for all the great content! :) In addition, I do have a collection of vintage lenses and would love to try adapting some of them to the Leica. I am not clear on how the rangefinder features would work with an adapted lens. This is my first rangefinder so I’m still wrapping my head around the features. (I don’t have the camera yet!). Will the rangefinder focusing actually work with these lenses? How do I know the framing? Also, are there any specific mounts that adapt better to the M mount, and where the adapter wouldn't add too much to the size? Thanks for any input. A couple of my favorite lenses are the Minolta 58 f.14, Minolta 45f2, Nikkor 50f2, and Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35 f2.4 (M42 mount). I have others but these are particularly good and not too large. Hoping to try one or more of those. Thanks!
Superbe review and test. Great comparison ont this video ..; Lot of work done ! And to me the winner is still the Summilux but good surprise with the Voigtlander 58. I sold my Canon 1,4 because I did not like the focus ring as it was too "long" to turn. But it is an amazing lens.
Thanks Jerome! Yes I was happy to see the Lux Perform here as I’ve always rated this lens. Yes I know what you mean with the Canon. 35mm video next up! Long day ahead ha
Hi Matt, I was wondering if you have shoot with Zeiss otus 55mm 1.4 and how It compare to others 50mm both sharpness and contrast. I’m just curious Cheers
Hi! Sorry I’ve not. I hear it’s good but most of my lenses are vintage lenses. I’m sure some of the modern lenses will be very sharp. All will be high contrast and clinical, whether Leica SL glass or the Otus. If the channel goes down the lens route I might test in the future if I get the opportunity.
Matt, thank you for sharing info about these lenses, each having a different characteristic. I can not afford to buy and experiment w all the M mount lenses that could work for my Leica M3, so I try to be very careful to shop for glass in the best condition, often telling myself that previous owners were not always careful. When choosing the best glass that you can afford (or offered at the moment) we should take the time to practice w that lens under different lighting conditions. Each lens likely different. Then work on Subject matter, composition and mood you want to create. Practice and experience may sometimes do more for a film shooter than fussing too much about getting the most famous model or brand. On a side note, hope film keeps attracting younger shooters and motivate people to open labs & clubs ❤❤😊😊
To me it's great how much work you put into comparing vintage lenses for rangefinders. And you know you are responsible that I bought a Leica IIIf and a handfull of lenses? Anyway, when you are judging lenses you are clearly concentrating on your own application: portraiture. Which is a good thing as otherwise the work needed would become overwhelming. For a generalized assessment you would need to check the lenses at about infinity (distance at least 100 times the lenses focal length) and jugdge their sharpness outside the center as well. But for general photography who really cares? For landscapes stop them down far enough and any lens will be just fine (except some modern asphericals like the voigtländer 1,5/35mm) and for general photography you are testing exactly what matters most. Keep up the good work!, It helped me a lot already and I can't enough! If I could ask for something, add the Canon 1.5/50mm to the list. This one currently grows on me.
So, Matt, don't some, but not all, of the Leica M mount lenses transfer f-stop info thru the Leica $450 M to L mount adapter? That should be true, but how do you know which lenses have electronic contacts on M mount lenses? Somewhere there must be a chart or something? Thanks for your great videos.
Just ran across this one. Brilliant. Your presentations are always excellent. Well researched and well presented. You could use the same presentations for the board of directors. I have no Leica lenses and am fond of the Sonnars, CZJ and Jupiter. I have a '57 KMZ Jupiter that is marvelous in modeling and color. It is as good or better than the others including the Skyllaney Bertele and the '43 CZJ f/1.5 and the Amotal.. I like the Sonar clan, and I believe the Amotal is a Planar. The differences in what I have in the shelf are minor, it is quibbling. Thanks again for your great work. I always enjoy your videos and learn something, Cheers.
Great video! Wish the CV 50/1.2 M-lens would have been part of the mix and especially how it compares to the winner, the Leica 50/1.4 Summilux (btw, which version did you use for the test?).
Hi Matt, Excellent comparison... and interesting results. It's been said that there is a lot of similarity between Leica M and R lenses, with some differences attributable to the looser design constraints in the R system (lenses bigger, can focus closer etc). How would you compare the Summilux-M to Summilux-R 50mm of the same vintage (i.e. not the newest R 50mm). That would be a hell of a comparison, an exclusively Leica 50mm shootout! :-) anyways, keep the videos coming along, they're all really good. Cheers
Thanks Mario, I don't have either of the old Lux. I didn't get the R as too soft for film and the same would be true of the old M (wide open)(I can use other lenses at f2 for less money). Lux ASPH M is special as good enough wide open even on film.
I have the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 non ai s-c lens in the F mount, and the 50mm f2 Jupiter 8 lens on my Zorki 4k rangefinder camera. I shoot the Jupiter 8 at f2 with wonderful results. My favourite all round lens with beautiful colour rendition and polished sharpness is my Pentax super Takumar 55mm 1.8 lens.
Thanks Neil, the Fuji guy I taught recently enjoyed the Takumar lenses too. I hear they’re good but I probably have enough 50s now. Yes I like the J8 👍🏻
I have that 55mm/1.8 Takumar as well as 55/f2, 120/2.8, 135/3.5, 200/3.5 and 300/4. Whenever I mount any of the Taks on any of 3 of my Fujis they all have this "brown/orange" look to images to the point that I will have to come up with my very special anti-Tak simulation to remove that peculiar cast. Nothing to do with sharpness or clarity, Taks are excellent, but that particular color I am growing tired of.
@@utube321piotr I have not come across that. But then I mostly shoot black and white. Back in the day I shot Kodachrome 200 with no browness. I still have the slides to prove it.
Great job Matt! To answer your question I would love a S-lux, not in my budget anyway :) . I'm interested your opinion regarding a Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan, either 50mm or 100mm. They have incredible bubble bokeh.
Another interesting test. I love 50mm or 80 mf or 150 4x5. I have a LOT of 50mm lenses. I’ve had 2 VM 50 1.1s, Noctilux, old summilix, summerit. But I have this mental block. I can’t remove my Noctilux from my camera if I’m going to a party. It’s not the greatest, but somehow it works for me. In my head I keep thinking sell and buy a sumilux asph. But somehow I never do it. I also love the colour rendering I get with the Noctilux. What is sharpness anyway. I the not the be all and end all.
Thanks Richard, yes i'm a 50mm man for sure. I still have more 50s I need to review (maybe 10 of them). Yes the Noctilux has a very special look. I love it for weddings. I should use mine more.
I’m hoping one day you’ll have your hands on a Summilux type 2 pre asph 50mm to compare. That’s the problem with these excellent vids, there’s always one extra lens you want on the list!
hey Don, sorry it was an issue I had with TH-cam and only the low res version uploaded (normally it loads low res first then high res shortly after). I will make all test images available soon so look out for the community post or message me in a few weeks if you miss it.
What about comparing ..with the GM (Sony) f1.2 50mm that IS amazing. (I know; in MF mode if necessary -that still does necessitate electronic connection) ? (My VL 40mm f1.2 appart it's "nice highlight glows" wide open, is very close to my GM. (but I need the eye-AF))
Thanks, nice idea. I just tested some of the lenses I had. I hear the GM is great. The 50 1.2 Voigtlander is slightly better than the 40 for sharpness but I like the size of the 40.
Yes the 40 is also unique because of its size. Gives me a "Leica feel", like with the Samsung fullframe fisheye 12mm f2.8 (not f2). But the huge Sigma 35mm f1.2, with the 50 f1.2 (very confortable) not only give superlative results, they offer more keeper opportunities regarding Eyes in focus so I hardly use the 40 anymore. But someone who wants to compose in MF with no hurry, perhaps AF glas should not be forgotten to be envisaged (if adapters exist and permit focus by wire MF. But indeed encumbrance can be discouraging.
@@AR-vf7vg thanks, the huge AF lenses are not for me. I couldn’t cope with the size and weight. I know first hand as I have one you’ll see in a future review :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Ive seen its sharpest than my 50mm V3 Summilux and closest focus...but I see more character and nicest bokeh from the Summilux V3
Thanks, Matt, for your quick summation. You have given me new incentive to do a comparison test on some FSU lenses which have been languishing in the back of my lens cupboard for some years. Three in Contax/Kiev mount - a Jupiter-8 (1950) which cost me USD22.00 in 2007, a Helios-103 (1983) which cost me USD5.00 in 2006, and a Menopta (1994) which cost me GBP8.00 in 2006. The Menopta is a "badge-engineered" version of the Helios-103. I also have a Jupiter-3 (1955) which cost me the princely sum of USD49.99 in 2006, and LTM versions of the Jupiters and some Industars. I have read that, whereas the Jupiters were modelled on Sonnar formula, the Helios-103 was modelled on Planar formula (double-Gauss) but it's pretty hard to get credible verification on that.
The kind of videos i like to watch.. too lazy to do the comparison myself ;) It looks like the 50mm Summilux F1.4and F2 images are the wrong way round, the bokeh circles look larger on the F2 image hmm but not sure as the video is still 480p.
Thanks Robert, yes really sorry about the 480p, Google told me that the video would load as full res a few hours later but it didn’t. Very annoying. You can check the aperture though.. if photo is 1 star rated it is 1.4, if 2 star its f2, in the LR review. I’ll try to check it too.
As I begin my Leica journey, I can't believe the amount of expertise and time that you devote to your channel. I assume that you must also be shooting for money? Luckily I'm 70 years old and I don't need to justify my expenditures.
I have the ltm Jupiter-8 and Summitar 5cm and vastly prefer the Summitar. It is super sharp in the center and has a lovely bokeh that becomes almoster paniterly and swirly between f2.8 and f4.
Yes ha, I tried to test the obvious basics. I think the Noctilux would do well for the magic factor too. I have got some nice results from my Summarit (see that video) but I find it doesn't suit every occasion.
Last November I bought a new 50 cron. Already had a 35 cron, and a 90 tele-elmarit. Then again, most of my stuff is street. Nevertheless, I loved the video..
I'm still seeing only 480P, which makes all these comparisons a bit preposterously hair-splitting! I'm sure the Summilux would still “win” even at 1080P…. maybe it's just better suited to the SL's sensor than the Voigtlander lens…
@@jlwilliams hmm I Googled it yesterday and it says full res can sometimes be delayed a few hours. I’ll check video on computer today. Sorry about that. Normally they upload ok.
Thanks Marc, I’ll admit I enjoy supporting the underdogs but equally it was nice to see the Lux smash the others. I’ve always said it’s the best 50 so I’ll glad it proved itself here. Pretty impressive isn’t it. (Great on film)
Sorry Toni, it was recorded the same as all my other videos but TH-cam decided to not refesh it at full res once posted (sometimes there is a lag). It seems like by now it is not going to update sadly. (The next 2 videos posted after were not affected).
Sorry TH-cam screwed up the upload and despite it saying that HD was in the process of updating it never came through, apologies. Last nights video loaded corrected as normal but that doesn’t help this video, apologies.
Ah Mike! ..THE MIke! Please email me as you email is bouncing back. The preset email is ready to forward when I have a working email. Thanks for getting in touch, I hoped you would! (I tried to Google you but no luck!) :)
Sorry I tried to stick to 1.4 and 1.5. I have a lot of 50s still not tested so I’ll have to do a future video to cover the 1.8 and similar lenses. Stay tuned!
Yes sorry! It's a desktop too but in warm weather the fans go crazy. (That was my trying to record at the coolest time of the day and with the windows open!)
Thanks Thomas, sorry that's my computer fan noise. I've since bought a laptop so if I need to do any screen recordings I can do so without the background noise.

Thanks! I’ve not tried the Meyer O’ lenses but if I get chance I will share in future videos.
i feel like helios is among top 3 for sure-very surprised
Yes I enjoyed doing all these test videos. Some hidden gems!
Ha thank you! Yes currently I’m limited to those I own . Stay tuned, maybe in the future! :)
Hey Matt - love your videos! R u aware that TH-cam is only allowing quality level 480p on my iPad - can’t find a way to return to 1080p!
hey Don, sorry it was an issue I had with TH-cam and only the low res version uploaded (normally it loads low res first then high res shortly after). I will make all test images available soon so look out for the community post or message me in a few weeks if you miss it.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for the heads-up, Matt. Keep on keepin' on.
@@DonConnorsProductions I had same issue yesterday with 28mm video but I was able to repost the video full res.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom There are a lot of potholes on the information highway...
@@DonConnorsProductions yes sadly the more I cover the more I realise how much more I could have covered!
Hi I will stay with the Leica Summilux-M 50mm F1.4 APSH I should be super with this one, thank you
Thanks!
The ultrabest is APO summicron, but lack of soul
The ultrasoul is Summilux pré asph v2
Thanks! yes I love Pre-ASPH lenses for more character!
Though I have several M lenses, I think the best value one for portrait is the 90 mm tele-Elmarit (thin).
Thanks Wilfred, I will be able to give you something you can relate to soon (close but not exact)
top video! don't forget the Jupiter-8 was first produced as a LTM-lens.
Thanks Helmut! Ah yes I should have mentioned it comes in lots of mounts! Thanks. Readers can see this here from you.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom (I just corrected my post. I had mistakenly typed AF, instead meant MF.)
Were would you put the Voigtlander 50mm APO Lanthar here??
Sharpest but not exciting.
Thanks Peter, I'm not sure the Helios 103 is a true Planar formula as it has way too much character!
It's good to know I'm not only one who forgets what lens I have in the back the cabinet lol
Haha yes it's easily done!
do you have a video about the LTM rokkor lenses?
Hey Garvin, I don't think I have any LTM Rokkors yet sorry. I use the M mount 40mm f2 (see those videos) or Minolta MD Rokkor lenses (see X300 video).
Yes after 400+ videos and 350+ blog posts I eventually had to quit my job so I could do it full time. I teach photography so that helps pay the bills.
Great comparison! But-no Summitar?? (I get that you’re focussing on fast 50s here, but you have Jupiter-8 in there, too.)
Hey Lugen, I’ve got you covered. I’m making 2 more 50 videos to include those I missed! Stay tuned
I have the ltm Jupiter-8 and Summitar 5cm and vastly prefer the Summitar. It is super sharp in the center and has a lovely bokeh that becomes almoster paniterly and swirly between f2.8 and f4.
It is good that you did not compare for the magic factor; all lenses would have looked mediocre, except for the Leica Summarit 50mm 1.5.
In most cases totally sufficient. I exactly have the same mix as you described.
Thanks Avery! I have 35 and 90 videos coming :)
@@MB-or8js more FL lens videos coming over this weekend
My choice: Summilux SL 50 :-)
Very nice Steve, I have yet to try that lens!
Love these videos!
Thanks Juan! I'm hoping to post 3 more in the coming days, stay tuned! :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Looking forward to it
I like the Zeiss, tbh... ;)
Yes the Zeiss has nice character. I did a full video on the 50mm f1.5 Sonnar vs Leica.
Please upload this video with a better resolution. At least 1080p. Thanks.
Thanks, YT normally uploads a lower res one first and higher res shortly after. If you check back soon it should refresh automatically.
From your previous posts I knew the result before seeing the post. I guess in this case the premium is worth it.😀
Thanks Marc, I’ll admit I enjoy supporting the underdogs but equally it was nice to see the Lux smash the others. I’ve always said it’s the best 50 so I’ll glad it proved itself here. Pretty impressive isn’t it. (Great on film)
Greetings from Pakistan. Brilliant as always.
Thanks Sadaqat!
TTArtisan 50mm/1.4 is really good for the price
Thanks i've not tried that one yet
No Nikon mount lenses tested, sad!
There is, the Nokton 58mm is F mount. See the full video on Nikon lenses if you like Nikon.
Why is this in 480p? It's very interesting but at 480p there is no difference between the lenses.
Sorry Toni, it was recorded the same as all my other videos but TH-cam decided to not refesh it at full res once posted (sometimes there is a lag). It seems like by now it is not going to update sadly. (The next 2 videos posted after were not affected).
Only 480p ?
Sorry TH-cam screwed up the upload and despite it saying that HD was in the process of updating it never came through, apologies. Last nights video loaded corrected as normal but that doesn’t help this video, apologies.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Not a problem at all. I figured it had to be their problem. Great video.

Thanks! Newer videos are now normally 4K, this is an older one sorry!
Just looked, a new Noctilux 0.95/50 is now £10,000. Wut?!
Wow, I did a review of the lens this year, see my lens playlist or video list.
No Canon 50mm f1,8 LTM in this test? Really? 😥
Sorry I tried to stick to 1.4 and 1.5. I have a lot of 50s still not tested so I’ll have to do a future video to cover the 1.8 and similar lenses. Stay tuned!
Although I would have loved to see some others, the video would have been 75 hours long with all the vintage f/1.8's and f/2's out there haha.
Your lapop is about to take off.
Yes sorry! It's a desktop too but in warm weather the fans go crazy. (That was my trying to record at the coolest time of the day and with the windows open!)
