I read somewhere that the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 is an excellent lens at an affordable price, do you have any experienced with this lens?

I've read the same about the Voigtländer 58mm f/1.4 lens but since I don't have a Nikon body, I am not really interested in getting it. Unfortunately (but for good reasons), this lens does not exist for the Leica M mount.
So if you're just starting out, a good Nikon film body (e.g. FM2 or F3) and this particular lens might be worth taking a look at. At least on my Minolta, I sometimes appreciate the extra 8mm focal length of the 58mm lens since it turns it more into a portrait lens without limiting you too much.
I owned this lens Max and regretted selling almost immediately after it left my hands....I've owned Leica, Zeiss...but this Voigt is one of my favourites....Will get another one when funds allow....Lovely images and a talented pictorial demonstrating the great reasons to have this lens in your kit. Very clear & informative video about the Voigtlander 50mm Nokton lens. Images here look very good. I have this lens on my Leica M3 and find it works so well with Ilford FP4 film. The Leica M camera and Voigtlander lens work very well, and you don't have to pay the very high prices for the older Leitz lenses. There seems to be more videos on Voigtlander lens models, which I find a bit confusing. If you have a good lens and get good results, it becomes almost academic what other models of Voigtlander are supposed to give. Nice you did this review and shared these lovely images.
I would have liked some comments of the physical handling of the lens, how tight or loose the focussing ring is, the focus throw, does the aperture ring offer full, half or one-third stops, how many blades are there in the aperture, how big or small the lens is, its weight, whether a hood is supplied with it, etc.

Thanks for your calm and informative videos. I’ve enjoyed both your Minolta and Leica series. Since I recently used most of my cash for a Leica M3, I bought this lens instead of the Sumicron 50mm f 2.0 (for the time being?). I’m glad to see how beautifully this little lens does portraits!

MG TC ?
Hi , Morris Garages (which I misspelt due to being new to commenting) was the name of a car Co.that later shortened their name to MG .At one part of the video there appears to be an MG TC classic car . They are lovely old cars if you like classic design, much-loved by the British pilots during WW11 . The MG TF original is even prettier and is driven by Mike Hammer in Kiss Me Deadly. He gets it on loan after starting the film with an MG MGA . The TC is very similar to earlier MG s but it looks like a TC to me . Regards Jake E.

Late to the party, bought this lens about 1 1/2 year ago. It is indeed not a Summilux but close, It is around 1/3 stop slower. My copy is excellent and as you stated this is indeed the poor man's Summilux. For the price this lens is a steal. It is fairly compact for the large aperture and extremely well made. It will last you a lifetime if taken proper care. Focussing was fairly stiff in the beginning but some massaging while watching TV did a great job. Regarding focus accuracy I have no complaints at all. Perfect focus on my M6TTL(.85) and on my digital Leica bodies. At f/1.5 prone to CA on digital but easily removed in post. I have the same problem with the 35 Summicron.
The only thing I am not found of is the knurled focussing ring.
It is indeed a great lens at the price point. I think Cosina made an excellent design choice.
You have convinced me to go back and mount this lens to my M2!
I have been borrowing my friends Voigtlander Nokton 50mm F/1.1 (Leica M) lens and I think the world of it! At it's widest I get the soft look and easy bokeh that you would expect at F/1.1 shooting what ever you feel shooting at that aperture. Specially nearing "Golden Hours" and low light. I just can't say enough about it and would not say anything other bad about it. I use it primarily on me Sony a7R and manually focusing with the assist of the 14 power (critical focus) to assist my maximum details on the subject. I know... Over kill, but I wanted to see how sharp the lens really was and it is mind blowing sharp (pixel peeping). Great job again my friend. Cheers!

Hi Derek - so may I ask what is your assessment of the Nokton 50mm F1.5?
Just purchased a Voigtländer 58mm 1.4. Very impressive. Does AI have any plans to review any Mayer Optik lenses, Max? Not a manufacturer I’m familiar with, but I understand they’ve been in the optic business since the late 1800s.
Worth watching alone for the correct pronunciation of the name, Voightlander as I have 2 Bessa 6X6's. Lovely image quality with the T-Max and Xtol btw..

Have you tried the nokton 50mm 1.1 ? I think it's a pretty good lens with some great character

Well done review of this great lens. I use this lens on a Fujifilm X-Pro2 which works really well. In this case it works more like an in between of a standard and telephoto lens witch works great with portraits. I've also used on a M 262 at a Leica Store and that worked also really great. This as an additional info to your review. Would hope to see more videos of this format in the future.

Max, good to see a video from you about a Voigtländer lens with this quality of photos. Thanks for sharing your insights and thoughts.
I would love to own two or three Voigtländer lenses: the 58mm 1.4, 28mm 2.8 and perhaps the 40, too. Apart from the old-fashioned build quality, I've heard that as well as optical sharpness, the micro-contrast giving perceived depth, as well as the colour saturation, is really there: A Zeiss-esque "pop".

It's certainly true that some Voigtländer lenses are really good. I happen to own the 40mm f/1.4 SC lens (Leica M mount) as well. Let me know in case you're interested in a review of this one.

Ah, I see. :) So you're probably shooting a Nikon, right?
Actually nothing just yet (apart from my phone). Recovering from long term illness (M.E.) and learning about photography/composition etc for a while. Though I did some shots under my name a couple of years or so ago out there on the web of flowers etc on a little Samsung digital point and shoot. I also have a Canon 7d, and a Rollei 35SE yet to use. :) I gather there's an older Canon mount version of I think the 40, or least it's possible to adapt. But yes, my Voigtländer and Zeiss interests as-yet must needs be fulfilled at a future date. But, I'm interested in all sorts, yet possible or not. :)

Enjoy digging deeper into photography and composition. I can certainly relate to your fascination of Voigtländer and Zeiss lenses. Let me know if you need any "buyer's guide" kind of advice once you decide to start out with film photography (again). :)
I have wondered for awhile and nothing I have found seems clear about it at all is whether the newer lenses are the same lens formulas as the vintage German made lenses or whether the current company just bought the names much like they did the Voightlander name and are just tacking classic lens names onto completely different designs.
What are your favorite 35mm films to use? Both b&w and color?
Thanks for your comment. For black and white, I really enjoy Ilford FP4 and Delta 100. For color, I typically go for classic Kodak Portra 400 or Portra 160. Nothing special here. :)
I have the 58 1.4 nokton for nikon ais, the last version which I’m using on sony a7. How it compare this one?. You make me put it on my list!🤷🏻♂️

Do you have any lens wobble in your copy? From the aperture ring on forward, that whole unit has some wobble in my copy? If I want this fixed, do you think I just need to send the lens to Voigtlander to be looked at?
Zach B Thanks for your comment, Zach. No, my lens copy does not have any wobble. You should definitely approach Voigtländer about it. There lenses certainly live up to certain standards and I haven't noticed a wobble in any of them yet.

I wasn’t crazy about this lens on my M9, but it does seem to render better on film cameras with B&W, and my Monochrom 246
Everything renders nicer on film. I feel film gives an accurate portrayal of the scene, due to a more natural tonal gradation and fall off.

Would you do any vid about how you develop your negative with xtol? I have the same lens but develop with Ilfotec HC the result was far form this. Would be good to see how you do it perhaps it's worthy changing to xtol.

Thanks for your comment. Please note that my lab developed and scanned these images (as noted in the video description). So I cannot take credit for the quality, I just happen to know which developer they use. Of course, xtol makes perfect sense for such a large operation like a professional lab. But I believe their Noritsu and Frontier scanners have the bigger impact on the final results in this case. ;)

Great video. I’m considering this or the Summicron v5 which is 3 times as much. In terms of size is there a big difference? How about quality of bokeh? I have the voigtlander 35 1.4 sc and not really happy with bokeh. I was also considering the planar but am afraid of wobble that people talk about. Thanks so much for your video
Thanks for your comment. I have a Summicron v4 and can therefore comment to some extent on your question. The Nokton is a bit larger (due to the wider aperture). The quality of the bokeh is significantly better than that of the 35mm f/1.4 sc (I own the 40mm f/1.4 sc and therefore think I know what you are referring to). In comparison to the Summicron, the Nokton has a much more modern rendering in my opinion. I personally love my Summicron and would always buy it again. But I also appreciate the Nokton and the kind of creamy and special look it creates.
Have you considered the Carl Zeiss Sonnar? Hamish Gill over at www.35mmc.com is very fond of this lens design and has all sorts of review on his site that you might want to take a look at.
If you can swing it the summicron is smaller I think, has the focusing tab and has less CA than the voightlander. Other than that, CA is the only difference between the two in terms of image quality...

Thanks for your reveiw. I was considering this lens for my Leica M7 and now I'm convinced. I enjoyed your presentation especially as you were using it on a M6. Many you tube presentations I can only watch for about a minute - I watched yours all the way through so that says something. I was also wondering how you scanned your negs and did you work on them on LR or Photoshop??

Thanks a lot for your kind comment and please excuse my late response. All the images in this video were scannes by my lab (www.meinfilmlab.de). There's only slight post-processing involved during the scanning process but they always try to retain the look of the respective film. I hope this helps.

How much of the Leica POP am I getting for 800 bucks? micro contrast and sharpness. Is there a percent value u could apply?
Catherine Manne Thanks for your comment, Catherine. Unfortunately, I can't really respond to that. In my opinion, this Nokton is a surprisingly good and solid lens that plays a special role in the Voigtländer lineup. If you want "Leica Pop", you should probably compare the Nokton side by side with a Summilux. Or you go for the much cheaper Summicron or even Summarit. But then you probably have considered that. :)

Yes I have considered buying Leica despite the cost. My recent RX1 died and I needed it for a project so I am struggling to find a set up that will get me close to a milky out of focus rendering and nice pop.
Hoping this Voigt may be a solution, obviously NOT exactly as a Leica but if it can come close it could be a viable option.
It certainly comes close. If other mounts are also an option, you might want to take a look at my review of the Minolta MC 58mm f/1.2 which has a beautiful creamy bokeh when stopped down a bit. There are adapters available for almost every mount for Minolta MC/MD lenses.

I agree with you that Nokton is a very good lens waaay cheaper then Summilux. The only negative is that the focus ring can be somewhat stiff which makes it difficult to focus on the fly(At least mine in chrome). Did you use color filter on some of those pictures you showed here?

With respect to your questions: I did not use any color filters for these images. I only occasionally use an orange filter for black and white street shots with my 50mm Summicron.
And interesting to hear that the focus ring appears to be a bit stiff in some cases. Guess I got lucky and have a copy without that problem. :)

Sorry about my late response, James. No, unfortunately not. I only own the 40mm f/1.4 Nokton Classic.
I have the older version of this lens, is there any differences?
I don't really know. From what I understand, Voigtländer created the modern version due to the wild success of the older version. And yet, I also heard somewhere that the new version has a more modern character and rendering. But since I've never tested the old version, I cannot really attest to that. Sorry. :)

Great lens for the price! My favorite Voigtlander for sure, way better than the 58mm / 40mm DSLR lenses in my opinion. Not quite as buttery as the Summilux, but it's hard to complain with the price.

Ich kämpfe seit Wochen mit dem Gedanken ein neues Kamerasystem zu beschaffen. Ich habe alles an Fuji bei Seite gelegt und teilweise verkauft, nachdem ich mit der X-T1 im regen einen totalausfall hatte.

Ich bevorzuge sogar ein System, das mich verlangsamt und mir Zeit abverlangt für den "decisive moment".
Ich bin dann auf die alten Leica M9 und dieses Objektiv gestoßen, dann jedoch auch auf Sony A7ii und dieses Objektiv mit einem Adapter. Was hält der Profi denn von solchen Kombinationen mit Mirrorless Systemen? :)
M JP Bin kein Profi, nutze aber selbst eine spiegellose Leica T mit diversen Vintage-Optiken (Leica, Voigtländer, Minolta) mit Adapter. Das ist meine einzige Digitalkamera. Die digitale Leica M hingegen is natürlich ein Messsucher und damit nur bedingt vergleichbar. Ganz anderes Gefühl, das ich persönlich für Streetshots und teilweise sogar Porträts sehr schätze. Eine M erzeugt eine besondere Stimmung beim Fotografieren und verlangt bewusste Entscheidungen. Ich persönlich habe durch meine M6 erst so richtig das Fotografieren gelernt.
Die Sony Alpha 7 Kameras sind natürlich technisch herausragend, erzeugen aber nicht annähernd eine solche Stimmung. Es sind kleine Computer mit zahlreichen (belegbaren) Knöpfen, Features und sogar Apps zur Erweiterung des Funktionsumfangs. Wer eigentlich nur fotografieren möchte und sich weniger für modernste Features begeistern kann, ist mit einer schlichteren Kamera besser bedient. Aber das ist letztlich Geschmackssache.

Wow vielen Dank. Das war mehr als erwartet. Das sind meist Dinge, die man zwar selber weiß, jedoch von einem Pro ( ja, als Leihe bist Du für mich Profi XD ) hören möchte. Das bestätigt dann auch meine Annahme. Ich möchte weg von dem ganzen technischen Druck. Höher, schneller, weiter etc...
Ein Freund, der ein renomierter Fotograf für AP ist, hat mir dazu heute geantwortet:
"It seems to be the public pressure of adapting to the rest. Working hard and with your own style these days "seems" to be on a second place but why follow the herd? Go out, find your own way you want to work. You are not the one who has to look for the customer of your content. If you like to shoot in MF with an old ass camera it is your work and your dedication to the art so go out, take the picture you love and the RIGHT customer is going to find YOU!"

I have this one and the F1.4 summilux, and compared it to a f2.0 summicron (Non APO).
F 2.8 and above it has BETTER bokeh than the f1.4 Leicas.
Bokeh at F2.0 to match the summicron widest F2.0 is almost Identical. Only CA is different.
Its worst crime is chromatic aberration wide open. Some can be corrected in LR. In B&W chromatic aberration shows up as a haze.
Like the author says, its mostly in digital. I think on film its minimized or less.
Its a very nice lens, great price too.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, there are adapters to Leica M mount lenses for micro-four thirds cameras. For instance, Novoflex offers such an adapter for around 150 Euros (code MFT/LEM) but there should also be cheaper options.
Just remember: crop factor 2x! So you'll have the equivalent of a 100mm lens, which has limited usefulness IMO. Consider the Voigtländer 35mm 1.5, which would give you a 70mm equivalent on your Lumix.

As mentioned in the video, most black and white images shown in the video were shot on Kodak T-Max (100) and developed in X-Tol by my trusted lab. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks to the help and experience of my friend Jules (shown in other videos), I am slowly getting into developing and scanning myself. But I started out with medium format film, so my experience is limited. Unfortunately, I cannot say much about your particular scanner. Are you just starting out with analog photography?

I generally enjoy shooting black and white film if that's what you mean. As I said, I've included one color image to give a rough idea of how the lens renders colors.

M JP Well, there's quite some truth to what you are saying. Since I am making a comparison to a Leica lens that costs several thousand Euros, I wanted to stress the significant price difference. But you are right that "poor man's" is a bit strong. ;)
