  • The Leica 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux has been my only Leica lens to use on 4 M bodies for the past 8 years. Check out why I've been so obsessed with this lens, and my journey with it to create the most bokehlicious images 😍🥰😎

    A lot of modern digital cameras and lenses look sharp...but Leica equipment are the only ones I can really think of using that retain a high quality look to the photos, but still has a natural, filmic type of look to the results. They don't look overly sharpened or super clinical. They just look completely natural. Thanks for sharing your video with us!

    That's a great video. Thank you. I have the 50mm Noctilux f/0.95, too. I also have the EVF for my M10-R, the "round" EVF. If I'm trying to shoot something that's moving - while shooting "wide open" - I focus through my EVF while taking a series of shots...click, click, click, click. Usually one of those clicks will produce a great shot that's in sharp focus. I'm amazed that you don't use an EVF.

    • @NoctiGirl
      @NoctiGirl  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hahaha I guess I’m used to shooting rangefinders! But I am not fast when I shoot my Nocti because I need all my concentration to make sure I hit focus. I have to be honest tho, as I age my eyesight is getting worse 🥹 I might invest in an EVF to make it easier on my poor eyes 🥲

      Thanks for tuning in!
      Yes, you are correct. A lot of fast lenses have maximum aperture at f/1.2. But what’s so special about the original Noctilux is that it contained 2 aspherical elements in the lens. Also, they weren’t just aspherical, they were hand polished. Can you imagine hand polishing aspherical lens elements and make 1,700 copies of this lens in the 60’s?! I think Leica was one of the first to do so 🤯

      @@NoctiGirl The noct is all, but not perfect. No social insecurities here, i am shooting for 4 decades. Thing is, all these extremely shallow DoF pictures, which floated the web many years ago, are quite often very boring, from a composition PoV. And for architecture, landscapes, etc. one does stop down, always. You'll never shoot these kind of things with F0.95, F1.2, F1.4 or whatever, before F8-F13 at least, usually.

    Loved your Noct homage. I had a .95 Noct for about 7 years. Sold it because I could not focus accurately. Learned later this was because of a cataract that was clouding my vision.
    Shortly after the warranty was up I was shooting with my M9 and Noct and fell down a volcano. The lens barrel and shade were dented (no damage to the M9…I was dented as well). I sent the lens into Leica for repair. Despite being out of warranty Leica Germany repaired the lens for no charge. No lens had ever been sent in for repair due to falling down a volcano. They like firsts. Have fun. Stay safe. Watch out for volcanos.

      @@NoctiGirl If you decide in the future you'd like to try some different lenses I can recommend the 21 Summilux… this is an amazing lens for landscape work (we visited Stonehenge last year and the shots I took were an order of magnitude better than I imagined being able to take before the visit).. I've definitely been eyeing that 21 lux!! When I was shooting my Canon system one of my favorite lenses was that 14mm f/2.8. It was SO WIDE but I loved it for architectural shots, especially when traveling! My only hesitation with that 21 lux is the need for an external viewfinder. Won't be an issue if I use it with my M10P, but with my M6 or MP, it would be an annoyance... I'll definitely give it some serious consideration! Thanks for tuning in. More vids to come! 😊

      @@NoctiGirl I bought the latest EVF for the M11 with the intent to use this when using my 21 'Lux. Thus far I have not used the EVF and have not felt the need. Frame as usual. If you are not happy with the shot, shoot again moving the camera a little bit in the direction you what to capture. Worst case merge a couple of shots to get the scene you want. You know, people chase lenses and one of the ways that people don't get a Nocti is because of the costs so they chase something else. People love the chase. My favourite photographer owns one camera and one lens, and why did he buy that one? "Because it was cheap."...... At no point in his photography did any look in wonder and ask what lens he used, because his shots are all about the time, the place and subject. If Noctigirl has one lens, no matter the cost, she is using her tool instead of just chasing the next thing.. so that's all good IMHO.

      Thanks, I appreciate you saying this. I’ve gotten crazy comments from many people, but I think people online are just crazy. When I do a video on many cameras and lenses, people say I must have a sugar daddy etc. when I never said I owned all of those cameras and lenses. When I do a video on the one lens I actually own and have used exclusively for 8 years, I’m called a one trick pony lol. I’ve learned to just be me and do what I like. People’s opinions are just noise.

    Very interesting and useful, of course. The ND filter advice is very important and especially if using a film M camera. My favourite film is Ilford XP2, so an ND filter is essential. It is a heavy lens, too, but it's a worthwhile sacrifice, like wearing a hair vest and walking barefoot over hot coals, but it's worth it. And it gives (me) a manly right wrist. 💪

      @NoctiGirl You are welcome, as always. And while you refer to yourself as a woman (biologically correct), I would refer to you as a lady; and as an Asian lady, you are blessed with youthful looks, which will typically last until you are about 90. As for lens weight, it is back-breaking, but the results really are unique and are instantly recognisable. And only 0.95 is really good enough. Other versions, however nice, aren't quite the same.

    If you're looking for a subject for a NEW TH-cam video, I personally would like to know more about filters, e.g. what filter should I use to emphasize clouds, etc. Regarding shooting your Noctilux on a (fairly) sunny day, setting your ISO to 100 and shutter speed to 1/4000 sec. will often do better than you'd expect, e.g. if your actual (human) subject is sitting under, say, an umbrella. NDS filters are awkward if you're moving from shade to sun, shade to sun.

    • @NoctiGirl
      @NoctiGirl  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Usually I would use a polarizing filter to dramatize the clouds! But this is for color photography. B&W is a different beast 😛 I’d use an orange filter for B&W but you should try to experiment and see what suits your style better! But I get you, you are interested in an episode on using different filters? Let me think about this!
      Sometimes setting my ISO at 100 and 1/4000 sec still aren’t enough for me to shoot at f/0.95… maybe f/2, that’s why ND filters are needed 🥹 but you are right, it could be a bit awkward carrying filters with you while shooting, that’s why I started wearing a belt bag where I could loop my filter pouch through and sometimes a light meter so I can go “hands free” 😉

    I think I need to challenge myself to try shooting my fast lenses wide open more. I rarely use my lenses wide open. I'm often at f2.8 or f4 on my 50mm because I like having more depth of field

    • @NoctiGirl
      @NoctiGirl  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And that’s great! We all have our tastes and styles. Always shooting at 0.95 has actually made me a lazy shooter lol cuz I’m always shooting aperture priority and don’t use my head 😅

      @@NoctiGirl One thing that I think is kind of interesting is how some lenses give you a completely different look wide open compared to stopped down. Some older lenses have a really big difference. I've never tried the Noct though, but I think it's worth messing with to see what you can get

      For sure! That’s why I tried to do a pano with the Nocti. I think I did it at like f/16 or something. But you are right, I should experiment with the lens more. I might be surprised by what I discover 😊

    Your photos are very good. One's choice of lens is due to how our mind is wired, my mind is wired very differently to yours, as my favourite lens is the Cannon EF 16-35mm f2.8 MK3, it's the only lens I have and need; I use it with my Cannon Eos 5D MKIV DSLR. I don't expect you to reply to this.

    • @NoctiGirl

      Thanks!! We all have our poison! I actually shot Canon for the longest time. I had my 5Ds (MK1, 2, 3) and all sort of EF lenses for weddings and events. That 16-35 is awesome! Though I preferred the 24-70 for a slightly wider range. My travel setup used to be my 5D plus the 14 f/2.8 and the 24-70. The 14mm for all the beautiful architecture and 24-70 for everything else. That’s a great setup you got there! Why wouldn’t I reply? You only got me more excited!! 😄

      @@NoctiGirlThanks for replying; as I am an old man at age 50, I have long since mellowed out in a sense that I no longer have expectations of people, hence why I said I don't expect you to reply; besides you are an adult thus are busy with your own commitments.
      I live in London where I was born; since age 2 I fell in love with the subway system in London (Underground), in such a fast paced busy and cramped environment my Cannon EF 16-35mm f2.8 MK3 lens is ideal.

      That’s awesome! I bet the subway system in London is very impressive. We don’t really have subway here in SoCal. Actually our public transportation is very unreliable, so everyone drives here 🥹

      @@NoctiGirl The London Underground (subway) is impressive in a sense that it is the World's first subway system, the first section opened in 1863, virtually all the lines are at least 117 years old, yet irrespective of it's age, it runs very well to the point where American tourists are very impressed, partly because how clean it is. I was born with a disability, as a result my parents had to take me to hospitals regularly, for these hospital visits we had to travel on the Underground, that's how my interest in the Underground developed; I'm not the only one, lots of artists of various disciplines have found the Underground to be of great interest in their work. This is turning out to be a conversation between us 🤣; seriously you don't need to reply. I subscribed to your channel yesterday, and so will be posting on your other topics.
