You haven't lived until you've watched David Tennant and Catherine Tate go at each other's throats whilst existing in the 80s

It should be illegal for two actors to have this much chemistry

Watching Much Ado About Nothing in Miami is so frustrating. I went to see a production the other day, and the actors were so disrespectful to the audience’s intelligence. They flew over all the subtle jokes and the not so subtle jokes, and over played whatever sex joke there was like “Oh yeah, they’re dumb. They’ll only get the sex jokes”. When Benedick says "the world must be peopled", the actor, I kid you not, stood on the edge of the stage, took off his hat and humped it like he was penetrating it. And the worse part is that people laughed at that, and were just dead silent in scenes like this. So, I guess they were right in thinking they would only get the sex jokes. I just... I can’t. There’s nothing like London theatre.

I'm actually seeing this play a couple times do we understand any of the Shake Yourself no do I get the slapstick comedy did I believe for one second that the character Beatrice and the character Benedict we're not into each other but I am in a very good company her cousin didn't believe it her uncle didn't believe it and his friend didn't believe it so you might as well get that box in a ring to put it in because you're protesting is just pitiful yeah you might as well just marry Beatrice because we all know you're in the world every one of us the cast and crew of the character knows it list and figured it out I don't I'm not stupid I have a brain I have a heart and I do have ears and the underlined that you're not saying you more than like her yeah your poor heart is befuddled in love with that girl and you be at rest is befuddled with that guy and short you both love each other even Shakespeare would have said it best you are Bell full of s*** except for he would have said that were full of it

Is it just me or does Catherine's acting bovver...I mean, bother anyone else a bit? She's good but I feel like it's a bit like the 'arm outstretched to the audience" projecting ott type of Shakespearean acting, I prefer when it's done more naturally.

I know she's a good actor - I've seen her in several things and she was admirable - but Beatrice is not 'her' role IMO. I thought she too often overplayed it to the point of coarseness [shades even of Nan!] and was at times too competitive with Tennant, losing the power of the subtlety that is in many of the scenes, despite the barbs. On the other hand, Tennant was superb as Benedict - he was born to play that role! - but I wish he had had a more skilful Shakesperean actor as his Beatrice. However, that the two of them adored working together and were having a lot of fun with the play was obvious and delightful to see.

She's very good in other things. She's mediocre here. It's too bad. Tennant is superb in this.

she's amazing in the emotional scene after hero is wronged! but this scene isn't my favourite of hers
Catherine Tate is a really good tragic actress which is so fascinating given that she's mostly known for comedy lol

@@CatherineCane ive been rewatching doctor who on iplayer, recently got to the episode where she gets her memory wiped by him to forget about him, (oops spoilers). that was good acting, her reaction when he was about to do it felt just like it would be, not over played or anything, but here is just ott.

Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson were MUCH better

    • @kaciecouch2150

Branagh’s adaptation is too perfect to compete with. My only qualm was with Keanu Reeves, who I don’t think had the experience in interpreting classical theatre to fully play the villain. He was fine, but I think his performance was similar to Tate’s here: clearly playing what they imagine “Shakespeare” to be rather than playing the character.
