Either your too young to know about the golden age of TV or your running an ad for the shows in the list. Hands down the top philosophy TV show and top TV show of all time is The Prisoner by Patrick McGoohan from 1967, and definitely NOT the remake. It makes everything that came after it look the same.
No mention of "The Good Place"? The show is literally about philosophy and has a philosopher as one of it's protagonists.
@Lysergiclips That's a pretty unpopular opinion considering it has 97% on rotten tomatoes, 8.2 on imdb, was the number 1 series of both nerdist and vanity fair, was nominated for 14 emmy's and 2 golden globes, while winning both a People's- and Critics' choice awards, not to mention four Hugo's and a peabody award.
from what I've seen in Good Place so far (I only watched a couple eps), it's focused more on ethics... which is also a philosophy
but it's not really the metaphysical type like Rick and Morty is. maybe that's why it's not included
EDIT: Nevermind, I watched the video and i think the Good Place should definitely be included
It is absolutely insane that he did not include the good place
I think it starts interesting but turns into standard Netflix show in no time
At the beginning he said being a good show is part of the criteria
True Detective takes No. 1 for me, no competition. People fail to grasp how deep it really is, even under close analysis. Dig deeper my friends.
Same! True Detective expressed existence and pessimism better than any other show
Black Mirror is so addictive. First time you hear about it you binge it all. Some of those episodes are so dark lol.
My only addition would be Ricky Gervais’ “After Life”. A profound series about grief after the loss of a beloved spouse.
I also agree with an earlier comment about Black Mirror. It is so good that it shakes you to your core. Certain episodes are so disturbing they still haunt me. It is perfectly named.
I hate black mirror. And not because its bad, but because its too good. The philosophical concepts black mirror presents take me to a weird scary place of existential dread
I expected "Dark" to pop-up at any moment, the more i waited the more it made sense to be this highly ranked, to my disapointment at the end, but still a top tier list tho, thank you man.
Saaaaame! Dark was AMAZING.
One of the best shows ever.
What's it about?
@@ItsBrown__ EVERYTHING !
Interesting list. Huge omission though is Twilight Zone. Should be on that list and be the 1st overall.
Great list! I’d add “Six Feet Under.” That’s a must for any philosopher. 😊
Rusty's conversation in the car with Marty on human nature and anti-natalism was amazing.
Good picks. I will watch every episode of each before Monday.
Really great video thanks for the recommendations!
How doctor who didn't make the list. Its imazing, at least Rick referred to him self as Doctor Who. Thank you for an amazing channel 🙏🏻
Northern Exposure was a great philosophical comedy and unlike all these dark shows, actually made you feel good after watching it
I'm surprised that Breaking Bad is not on the list. A list of ten doesn't give much space. Maybe should have an honorable mention list.
Great list! Can I recommend the series The Good Place if you haven’t already reviewed it yet?
The Wire, Gomorrah, The Sopranos, breaking bad / better call Saul, Madmen: you can't go wrong.
Bojack Horseman is a no-go in my book.
I would also add the original Twilight Zone.
Can you review episodes in one of these series? For example black mirror tks for your recommendation. I'm on a binge and watch review of every episode after I finish one. However I'm still wonder with philosophical idea in the movies and yet any videos on yt talk about this. Your channel would be popular if your content about this. I would love to hear your philosophical analysis about the series.
Regarding Rick & Morty, I particularly found the "Strawberry Smiggles" skit to be fairly thought-provoking. Watching those children disembowel that cereal mascot, in order to sustain themselves, inspired me to reflect on the fleeting nature of our existence, and how the apparent hubris of short-term profit and/or pleasure can cloud our judgement.
I was hoping DEVS would be on this list. Decent show about Determinism vs. Free Will. And it is almost like the Matrix but in reverse...no more spoilers.
Hello philosophy vibe
Some good recommendations here. I've seen most, will check out the the ones I haven't.
However one of my favorite TV shows is not mentioned. Person of Interest. It explores the effects of artificial intelligence on society. Other themes are meaning in life, human connection and redemption.
It is over the top adventure, darkly funny and very well thought through.
Do you know a game called nier automata? It has a lot of philosophical themes. One of the core concepts of its prequel (nier replicant) also reminds me of dualism, with humanity separating their souls from their physical bodies.
Dark and The Good Place need to be included. Glad to see Black Mirror as #1 though, good list overall!
The Leftovers, Six Feet Under, Twin Peaks, Dark, Dekalog, Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Good Place, alll shows that should've been there.
Black mirror, Westworld, Bojack etc. are all amazing, but there has to be 'midnight gospel' in that list as well!
Allow me to mention Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They play with morality and ethics a lot but also themes of identity
I would like to add two animes:
Serial Experiments: Lain
Neon Genesis Evangelion
A bit surprised "The Leftovers" is not on the list
"The young Pope" should be at the top 10.
I love House of Cards, Westworld, and Severance
What you think about the russian series (the day after) ?
"Dark" should be top 10 for sure.
The Sinner season 3 is very existential and focuses on themes centered around Nietzschean philosophy
Good list, surprised by the lack of ‘the good place’ but I did end up feeling a dip in quality after season 1 so maybe thats why.
Not sure if you guys are particularly interested in video games but there are some games out there (such as Nier: Automata or Dark Souls) that have some pretty solid philosophical themes if you’re willing to do a list
thank u so much❤
You're welcome 😀
My favorite show, Futurama, touches on some interesting topics.
“Severance” has a similar premise to Phillip K Dick’s “Paycheck.”
Would also highly recommend the shows "Undone" and "Love, Death and Robots"
What about 'Lost'? I know it eventually went off the rails but the first series holds up.
Lost for me is absolutely a philosophical show thanks to John Locke! ❤
Thank you
You're welcome :)
I wish there was a TV show that dove into ideas of consciousness without it being AI related or some other tech-y sci fi theme. Like one that gets us to truly ponder our very own theater of the mind as we’re actively watching.
Watch Undone
@@malxnt ill check it out! thanks
"What separates man from machine is that machines cannot think for themselves. Also, they are made of metal, whereas man is made of skin."
I'm not sure I agree that the lower half of your rankings are particularly philosophical even though they are good shows. I would've replaced Futureman with Love, Sex and Robots which is in some ways an animated Black Mirror, and replaced House of Cards with Game of Thrones that shows the pursuit of power, the functioning of karma, the double-edged sword of tradition, and what it means to be a good person in a bad world. Every character lives or dies by their ethical and political creed and its a fascinating watch for political and moral philosophers, especially as the set design, characters and writings are so well done, at least until the showrunners got bored and ran out of source material in the final seasons. Walking Dead should also be on the list. It raises ethical, existential and philosophical problems in a very deep and while it's not always as nuanced and multi-levelled as GoT, it did it very well for the first five or six seasons of its run.
Oh, and of course Dr Who, although how philosophical it was really depends on the era and the writer. Ditto with Star Trek.
Well "House" (2004 - 2012)... I am pretty sure this series can go in many categories, by ease philosophical too...
South Park is good too
Requisite release? How do you get it?

Foundation should be here apple tv really has good philosophical sci-fi flicks
Ok I commented elsewhere on the lack of The Good Place.
It's fine if you didn't like it but are there really no good shows with women as main characters?
I thought little fires everywhere was pretty sweet.... Really good ending !
"Raised By Wolves" should've been up there.
thanks.. ill look the one i havent seen... true about rick and morty and bojack
westworld only seemed deep but in reality it didnt... and black mirror is great but it also has bad episodes...
Wow, you didn't mention Dark on Netflix.... Wow....
The good Place???
These philosophifers are sure a fun bunch...no? There is 20 minutes I will never get back. It was like watching j Paul Sartre try to figure out what to have for lunch.
Future Man is a hidden gem.
Totally
You forgot "The Prisoner" with Patrick McGoohan.
Red Dwarf (British)
#2, I don't know... I'm DEEPLY skeptical about "CBT", this old sketch embodies the basics of CBT at it's essence. th-cam.com/video/jvujypVVBAY/w-d-xo.html
West World is a documentary
The Prisoner starring Patrick McGoohan
Number 1, or 6, it's 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other.
Lol bro said Rick and morty.
Dark, paranoia agent, serial experiments lain, Sonny boy, ergo proxy, twin peaks, the twilight zone, midnight gospel, are all better
I would say Rick & Morty touches a lot of things, never will it do something with it. Season 1-2 was fire but afterwards it was all nonesense to me.
You didn't cover the best one, The Leftovers.
Yes
Who knows you, The leftovers?😢
Russian Doll?
Del Torros the strain
The leftovers?
West World = Fantasy Island
👍
Its 1 am. I should really sleep. But thanks
six feet under
Aren't all humans philosophers? Their philosophy might be wrong, but it is their own.
You're noone to tell they're wrong either
After you mentioned Nietzsche's ubermensch in frickin' The Boys, I question how much you really know about philosophy. Sorry.
1.) House of the dragon
2.) Star trek- enterprise
