The Last Kingdom is my favorite historical series. The thing that places it above other shows for me is the complexities of Uhtred's upbringing, moral compass, stolen birthright, love life and how he develops bonds with both Christians and Danes throughout his life. The bonds he creates amid the warring differences between these people make him a truly tortured soul at times and his struggle with it drives the show. He's one of the best written, most interesting and captivating characters I've seen and Alexander Dreymon is absolute eye candy. It is an absolute must watch for lovers of this genre with Vikings solidly coming in behind it.

Well for top 10 medieval , was thinking it would be "from all over the world" in different languages. If that is taken into account then there are many from Asia too that may take you by surprise.
@@Ardunafeth Of course, you can find tracks of the Renaissance back to the XIV° century in Italy, that is true. But it is rather what you can call harbingers, and they mostly concern arts. In the classical way of dividing the different political and social periods of History, the Middle Ages ends at the end of the XV° century (1492), and then the Renaissance starts.
@@heliedecastanet1882 . Renaissance was a term coined in Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries. This is the the time of Dante, Petrarch, Da Vinci, Macchhiavelli, the De medici's, Florence at it's peak, the great artists, etc. The renaissance is an integral part of the Middle Ages and in no way started áfter the middle ages..
@@Ardunafeth Yes, as I wrote, you are speaking about art, and Italy. And I totally agree with you. Dante and Giotto, and Simone Martini before Dante, and maybe if you want Duccio. But I was referring to the traditional divisions of global History and all Europe, not only Italy : Antiquity starts with the invention of writing and ends with the fall of Rome ; Middle Ages starts with the fall of Rome and ends with the discovery of America ; Renaissance starts earlier in Italy, but covers all Europe in the XVI° century, and is the begining of what is called the Modern times. All those divisions are totally arbitrary, we both know. I am not saying they are right. But I use them as a general convention, that's all. And if I wrote that Borgias were Renaissance, it is just because, despite the early renaissance of arts in the trecento and quattrocento, the forms of governments in most of Italian cities remained medieval till the XV° century, after which most of them collapsed, replaced by big kingdoms, dukedoms, etc… Look at a map of Italy in the XIII° century, then a map of Italy in the middle of the XVI° century, and you will understand what I mean.
The last kingdom is second to vikings. Even on this list vikings is number 1. The last kingdom utred never ages they just change his hair style. But in vikings ragna becomes bald and looks older as so all the other characters over time
I would add Merlin too. Superb serial
Yup cool show
The Last Kingdom should be on top. Best Series till date .
The last kingdom ❤️
Pillars has a fantastic ensemble of actors.
My opinion, the last kingdom is the BEST.!!!!
u dont show Robin Hood with marian, cmon. The Last Kingdom that Alfred scene is just Amazing, the music, the words the everything. Hard to choose which one is better Vikings or The Last Kingdom but i think Vikings has more epic scenes
I loved The Last Kingdom!!
Great list!!! Vikings was soooooo BAD ASS! 🤜🏽🔥
The Borgias, with Jeremy Irons, Francois Arnaud and Holliday Grainger was phenomenal. Vikings was a spectacular show and it looks like I'll have to give The Last Kingdom another try !
The Borgias isn't Medieval
@@drewskij2175 15th century isn't Medieval?
@@Ardunafeth 14-17th century is the Renaissance, especially in what is now Italy
@@drewskij2175 And 5th-15th century is the Middle Ages. Ergo a series taking place during the 15th century takes place during both renaissance and the Middle Ages
What's ergo about where does it take place ?@@Ardunafeth
I can’t agree more, the last kingdom and vikings are the best
I've seen most of these. Marco Polo isn't all that great. Season 1 is a little better though than season 2. Watched all of Vikings. One of the best historical drama pieces, similar to GoT with violence/brutality/sex/nudity. Halfway through the last kingdom and so far it seems like quite a promising show.
But I'm also watching other non-medieval/battle type historical drama TV shows like downton Abbey right now. This show is amazing and one of the best for another reason.
TLK season 1 and 2 are incredibly written. The witty dialogue with the balance of comedy/drama is unmatched
Viking and last kingdom both my fav

Vikings is the best tv series ever created 🔥
My fav all time
You haven't seen anything else if you believe this.
@@Kia_006 I have watched many series's but nothing compares to the vitality of vikings
After Got
The Sopranos>>>>
You missed The Tudors, The Borgias, Versailles, and Medici! They were excellent series with excellent performances from their stars!
The white queen, the white princess, the Spanish princess, the Tudors and then the reign. Watch it in this order and you will enjoy it the most.
Knightfall is so underrated!!
I was ANGRY when it got canceled. My husband was actually interested in something I watched.
Philippe in the series is like this: "I'm a crybaby who starts a war just because my wife cheated on me. *sobs*". While in the real life he got rid of templars because of economic and politic reasons. This is the only reason I didn't watch the series no matter how much I admire Philippe as a king in real life.
excellent show
The last kingdom is one of a kind, one word to describe it is PERFECT
It is pity 😕 that the best empire at medieval times ( Byzantium) has not had moove or series.
I agree. There would be a great show to create on the Komnenos family !
There's some Byzantines in Ertugrul but they are mostly villains.
I would add Kingdom, the Korean zombie period series. Great stuff!
The Last Kingdom should be No. 1
Highly recommend a Turkish series called DESTAN. Incredible storyline.
First of all thank you for the video! I have just one issue: when I see all these tops, I have the feeling that nobody has watched “Medici “, a criminally underrated tv show. It’s the most accurate tv show but is also furiously entertaining with a great cast and music. One could say it’s not “medieval “ but as you include tv shows that take place after (white princesse, Spanish princess), I put the word here.
Medici was a great show
thank you!!!

Depends on your cut-off for the Medieval period is, the list includes Henry VII's time but is Henry VIII still considered valid? If so, The Tudors has to be high up on the list, absolutely fantastic show.
@@aragorniielessar1894 True, but its pretty close, from a quick search most people say Henry VII was technically still Medieval so it literally cuts off inbetween father/son in a lot of peoples opinions
Does it get better? I watched the two first episodes but thought it was kinda boring.
@@greyman8335 I don't remember the first 2 episodes being that different to the rest of the show, if it was a while back i'd suggest trying it again, if it was recent then maybe it's just not your cup of tea.
@@greyman8335 it's boring! Medici is a much better show.
Historical speaking the white princess is officially the last queen of mideval earor then comes the golden age or explorer age.
Well I totally agree with #1 & #2 also I really liked #6, The White Queen & I recommend it to anyone who haven't seen it yet.
I recommend to watch the white princess too
1 and 2 are perfect!
I highly recommend Magnificent Century. It is a Turkish series based on the life of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Along with this, it chronicles the rise of Haseki Hurrem Sultana, Suleiman's legal wife, who is credited with being the first woman in an era known as the Sultanate of Women.
I knew Vikings was #1. I've seen all but 3+4. Even the honorable mentions too!!!! I love that era.
La Peste should be on this list. Absolutely fantastic. Best period drama ever in terms of raw attention to detail.
Well for top 10 medieval , was thinking it would be "from all over the world" in different languages. If that is taken into account then there are many from Asia too that may take you by surprise.
Pillars of the Earth is excellant, and the book of the same name is even better.
No mention of the brilliant The Borgias with Jeremy irons or north and South Mrs Gaskell version. A must see if you love historical dramas
The Borgias are Renaissance.
@@heliedecastanet1882 Renaissance took place during the Middle Ages...
Have a good evening, and I wish you the best.
Bye
So happy Pillars of the Earth is on the list 😍 not high up enough in my opinion
#10 Knightfall
#9 The White Princess
#8 Robin Hood
#7 Norsemen
#6 The White Queen
#5 The Pillars of Earth
#4 Marco Polo
#3 The Hollow Crown
#2 The Last Kingdom
Honorable Mentions: The Spanish Princess, Camelot, World Without End
#1 Vikings
how is GOT not on the list?
The White Princess is not set in the War of Roses, it's set after. The White Queen is set in the War of Roses.
You should include Barbarians as well
truly one of the shows of all time
Not sure I’d include Pillars of Earth in this list. I think the BBC Series The Musketeers would be a better choice.
