  • It has become to be known as the "Thundersnow Blizzard" in Chicago thanks to multiple lightning strikes during the February 1 & 2, 2011 blizzard and because of this now famous reaction by The Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore.

Some of you people don't realize how significant thundersnow actually is! It is an extremely rare event that only happens when the conditions are just right. Jim Cantore knows it, which is why he is so excited by it. Oh yeah, lightening and thunder. But in a snowstorm that is almost unheard of.

I've seen a flash of lightning during a snow storm just once. I was a teen in the late 90s walking to a friend's house and saw a purple flash in the sky. Then I moved to Florida and that's that.

§paethon What a lucky man, I witnessed lightning during snowing only few times here in Czech republic, last time in Febraury 2019, when cold air from East mixed up with humid air from France resulting in strong winds and small thunderstorn. I wonder how those lightnings are quiet, the same lightning closer than 1 km is very loud in thunderbolt storm and can be heard up to 12 - 15 km, in thundersnow are strongly muffled and anything more distant than 3 km is barely noticeable

You really have to admire Jim Cantore for his joie de vivre over the thunder snow strikes (which admittedly are pretty cool). My son loves this video and has played it 10-15 times--it leaves him in hysterics. The only dude to come close to Jim Cantore's enthusiasm is Dr Neal Frank of the National Hurricane Center, who I came to know on TV when I was a teenager living in South Florida in the 1970s. Dr Frank knew his stuff, no doubt. And while you and your family were feverishly putting up storm windows and nailing down everything you could with a hurricane bearing down on you, Dr Frank would describe the hurricane in almost loving detail--"I think this might be a Cat Five!" and trace all the ways the storm could inflict a direct hit. Like Jim Cantore, Dr Neal Frank loved his work!

I’d never heard of such a thing till then. It did it three times! Scared the daylights out of me. Biggest snow flakes I’d ever seen too! And we’re in Tennessee. None of us had ever heard of it. I can remember the one and only time I’ve ever experienced thundersnow, back in late 2003 or early 2004 here in Hatfield, UK (about 15 miles north of London). It had been trying to snow all day and about 3pm the sky suddenly darkened and turned the weirdest burnt orange colour I’ve ever seen. I was out playing with a little friend of mine and we both looked at each other and said “nah” and ran home. 😂 My older brother was out practicing his football and he was startled by the first blinding flash of lightning, which was a lavender colour. No visible bolt, just extremely bright sheet lightning.
Everyone came outside despite the freezing cold to have a look…and then the snow hit and boy, did it come down hard. Our street became pretty much snowbound, other streets gridlocked, traffic at a standstill, people abandoning their cars. Total chaos. Unforgettable afternoon.

So Now we run to the window and scream when it happens, and we tell our Thundersnow girl all about it. She is in my thumbnail and she looks like a blizzard is on her tummy and chest and legs. And it looks like lightning marks on her legs. And if thundersnow had a personality, she would be it!

Here in Buffalo, (typically during the Lake Effect storms and sometimes in the squalls) it usually thundersnows during the beginning a few times , and occasionally/ sometimes it can happen all throughout the storm. Mmmmaby we'll get 1 or 2 during a blizzard. Although it does sound neat & cool, I (personally) don't enjoy it so much, because it means half a day of shoveling and plowing's coming.

I saw my first Thunder Snow in Buffalo back in November 2000. It was magnificent...

I have seen thundersnow alright, just not to that close up. It was during the December 27, 2010 Blizzard in Nyc during the height of the storm. I was seeing nearly non-stop strobing lights to what I initially thought was a nearby plow, but the flashes were blue and they were not systemic, but unpredictable. There was no thunder, and the lightning was very dim. At the time the snow was coming sideways, the wind was gusting to 60 MPH and the visibility wad only 1-2 street blocks. Could not see past 500 feet, a true blizzard! I lost count of how many flashes I saw at about 50, or 60. I noted 1-2 flashes per second. The snow bands were coming in from the East and Southeast at the time. I was in Queens Village, in the eastern section of the borough of Queens in NYC at the time. It was the craziest snowstorm I ever saw!
It was really a bummer I didn't have my camera yet, or you would have truly saw how crazy it got. The only evidence was my Facebook posts in which I described the weather to my friends, follwers and fellow TV meteorologists who I friended at the time. The tree in my back yard was swaying like in a hurricane, and I was worried it was going to fall over. Keep in mind that the snow was dry and wasn't even sticking to the tree, it was that the wind was strong the tree came a couple times close to tipping over and several medium sized limbs did fall.

Oh brother....Jim Cantore's about my age and I've heard and seen "thundersnow" lots of times since I was a kid. He gets so over animated.

Can confirm that the strike at 0:04 did in fact strike the John Hancock building. My aunt remembers seeing it!
