I didn’t know about this, I had a guitar pick that had warped out of shape in a clothes dryer, so I thought I could just heat it up with a lighter and bend it back into shape. I was dramatically wrong 😂

An important safety tip: don't play guitar when the room is on fire. One would think this would be obvious, guitars being made almost exclusively from wood, but the burning pick just sealed the deal.

One of the ingredients of celluloid picks is nitrocellulose, which is used to make gun powder.

I remember the first time I accidentally ignited one.
I was just now reminded when I put a lit joint in an ashtray I had made that contained one.

I’m here as I was playing guitar with a candle beside me and got a nasty shock when curiosity got the better of me….

Note to self. Celluloid, very flammable.

If you smoosh a cigarette or joint between them, it’ll make a huge smoke cloud. Accidentally smoked out my basement that way.

Celluloid is made from Nitrocellulose and camphor. As it ages, the camphor molecules are ‘squeezed’ out of the mass due to the unsustainable pressure used in the production. That pressure causes the nitrocellulose (Very high imflamable) molecules to bind back to each other or crystallize, and this results in the camphor molecules being shoved out of the material. Once exposed to the environment, camphor can undergo sublimation at room temperature, leaving the plastic as brittle nitrocellulose. Also, with exposure to excess heat, the nitrate groups can break off and expose nitrogen gases, such as nitrous oxide and nitric oxide to the air. Thus that could explain your explosion.

    Thats crazy!!
I wonder if you can ignite one with a firesteel??
Oh wait...I see in the sidebar "Guitar Pick Fire Starter"....someone already did it...lol.
