Everyone; we commissioned Guthrie Govan to do this article because we knew it would be a labour of love. It is 100% him and was one of the last song transcriptions he did for GT. There was no permission request to run this audio from GT on youtube but glad you are all enjoying it! Best wishes to all!
+GuitarTechniques Hi GT, I posted this back in 2008 without any advertising because I wanted to share it with a friend. Just so you know, I'd be happy to take it down when ever you'd like. :)
+Matthew Robinson No worries, keep it up here. Our main reason for commenting was to point out that it was indeed Guthrie that recorded and transcribed Shawn's wonderful playing. Get You Back is not only one of Shawn's most 'catchy' pieces but also a fave of several GT tutors as well as Guthrie.
I truly don’t understand the notion of comparing guitar players. Guthrie and Shawn are both monsters in their own regards and Guthrie covering this tune should be considered nothing less than a love letter. I’m truly happy I got to live to experience both of their music
Isn't that beautiful my brother that we can experience these things in our lifetime the music and the things in life I'll leave it as that okay God bless you
I'm four years late to comment but Shawn played slides and thrills like that all the time. Guthrie do too of course but in this case I think he's trying to emulate Shawn's playstyle.
When I hear Shawn Lanes Esperanto live, I cry like a baby. I don’t know why it’s just so incredibly beautiful, I listen to tonnes of music and guitarists. But I rarely get emotional to any music, but it’s just such a lovely song . Such a underrated musician.
Yeah, this is a beautiful tune, done justice by Guthrie. He is one of Shawn's biggest fans. He'll tell you himself there was only one Shawn Lane, but this is beautifully done!! Nothing but respect for this!
I met Shawn a few times in late 90's and in '03 I believe. Most down to earth guy. Last time I spoke with Shawn I had a bad feeling for him. His breathing was short. I even emailed his sister expressing my concern for him. But at least he lived his life his way and got the chance to live his dream.
@@JoseFuentes-fn3dl Yes, for some reason he just went nuts chain smoking there towards the end. And when I visited him for the last time in the hospital, he demonstrated one of those lung exerciser/test machine things for me and he had absolutely zero lung power left. Scary, it was.
I wanna thank Guthrie for keeping this music alive. Can´t stand this talk "There´s (was) only one Shawn Lane" ... sure, but he´s playing in heaven now and sends angels like Guthrie to make us hear and remember him.
Why the hate? This is more a tribute than a pure cover, I can surely feel both Guthries and Shawns presence here. When I see these negative comments I laugh and cry, so sad yet so funny. Clearly someone didnt take the evolutionary steps with the rest of us! GOOD JOB GG KING!!!!
Such a phenomenal song written by such a phenomenal musician, this song brings goosebumps and a tear every time, just beautiful melodies with brilliance all the way through by Shawn. Guthrie is the only guy who could touch on the most subtle to the most seemingly inhuman aspects of it all, incredible playing by Guthrie here and what a beautiful tribute to a legendary musician.
Woooow!Ive heard every instrumental guitarist known to man I believe and all the greats but the writing and playing on this particular track is one of the most wonderfully uplifting and tasteful pieces of audible art that I have ever heard! The feel, note choices and style take me to another place and moves me emotionally like music is supposed to,thank you for sharing your gift with me and it truly is a pleasure to discover this song after 30 years of listening to instrumental work.
Reading through the comments sections in Shawn Lane videos is like going to a family reunion. It's great to see guys like Nilli and oilkills still around here and listening to Shawn!
Wow this is a great version, not many people on the planet could come close to the amazing Shawn Lane. I would love to hear an Allan Holdsworth version! Shawn was a BIG fan of the master!
As a die Hard Lane and guthrie guy,I just heard this and heve never been more proud to be a Guthrie fan.IMO Lane is arguably the greates guitarst to ever pick up the instrument. And after hearing this I am more impressed than ever at the vast amount of styles @ techniques Guthrie has,and utilizes in his music. And his ability to do covers and just nail the techniques phrasing, sig licks, etc is astounding. What cant Guthrie Govan do?
I love Shawn Lane. I am very pleased that Guthrie did this cover. Shawn is a true inspiration to me and to all the rest of the musicians out there, not just guitar players. A true gift from God he was. R.I.P Shawn
Man this was in guitar techniques in the early 2000s. I used to buy it religiously when I started play - this got me into Lanes playing. Also Guthrie doing cynic and death style riffs was my gateway into death metal
I can confirm that this is one of the best comment sections. Not only because we are Shawn's fan but also we know how to appreciate pure talents and sheer efforts that are put into this by Guthrie. Obviously anyone can hear the playing of Guthrie here and not of Shawn. But that's the point I think, playing someone's music while keeping your own soul intact into the music. Only love and respect for GG
2 absolute monsters. Theye are both so unique. Lanes speed and melodic tones is out of this world. Just like Guthries improvisation I don't think there's anybody alive or dead that comes close including lane. But we are the winners getting to hear/see such Virtuosity and 2 of the most humble down to earth guys you could ever meet.
Wow !!!! What an addition - sonically this is so amazingly close to Shawn’s original ( I’d love to watch Guthrie perform this ) - maybe he and Jonas can get together to cover the incomparable’Temporal Analogs of Paradise’ . Guthrie is one of the few gifted people who can actually accurately ‘cover’ the great Shawn Lane - damn we miss you man !!
i opened the video without reading the tittle, just saw the photo of Shawn Lane... then I started to listen and I was like "No way", when I read the title I knew it, it was govan, his tone, his picking style, but there was the Shawn lane song. it's true that there's only one Shawn lane, but only Govan could cover this so well
Listen to the powers of 10 album regularly for a decade, and then come back to this video. It's definitely not Shawn, can't say if it's GG or not. A damn good cover though.
3:30 is where Guthrie kind of loses the crying tone and it sounds a little plain. But except for the dryer sound I thought he did a great job and the fast stuff at the end sounded really good.
What can you even say about this? What a worthy cover. Note-for-note when Shawn fans would want it to be. Guthrie doing his thing in the perfect spots.. Incredible job.
I've seen him play live around 6 times. Trust me, he can play the augmented stretches and more but thats just not his style of playing. I do agree that Shawn can alternate pick faster, but Guthrie is pretty damn close. I give the edge to Guthrie when it comes to versatility, he can literally play just about any guitar style and very well. Both are my favorite gutiarist.
I'm sure this would get a nod of approval from Shawn, would he still be alive. This is virtuosic playing right here. It's a beautiful tune and Guthrie plays it just right. RIP Shawn Lane.
That was so epic. Actually gives me the Shawn Lane chills too, it's so moving. I never thought anyone would be able to cover him but of course Guthrie can pull it off. Guthrie's 'who's best' where he covers many artists and nails it shows his exceptional ear and technical skill
Yes, he kills it-Guthrie is one of the best in my book, and I agree Lane may be the best ever-a miraculous talent. Then again-statements like that are always suspect-it's art, not sport, but I do love these guys!
Nice really nice cover from guthrie ! Ok finaly decided to learn to play this song Shawn lane has unique tone and vibrato by the end of each note. Great feeling and warm melodies that makes him one of the greatest artists ever lived
Just by listening to this you can hear huge influence on Guthries playing by Shawn. Also it shows how Guthrie is one of the greats by nailing Shawn’s greatest song (imo). It may not be his fastest but the emotion and phrasing brings me to tears. Shawn played music first and foremost and the technique was secondary
Guthrie with his incredible perfect pitch used to transcript Shawn's music. You can feel he knows every detail of Shawn's game, he's from far the best interpret of his music we miss so much
To be fair, a young(er) Guthrie landed his job with GT mag by submitting a transcription of Not Again (I think) to them many years ago, so he'd clearly been meticulously studying the terrifying Lane-isms which the rest of us...erm....can't anywhere near :)
It's a good cover for sure, but it's the little things that Shawn did that really made him unique. For people very familiar with Shawn's original version, listen to the slight change in the phrasing that Govan does at 3:22. A small change, but the odd relaxed timing that Shawn used during that part really gives the song so much feeling. Even if it's not very difficult to do technically.
i thought i would die before ever getting to hear any Shawn Lane by Guthrie, thank you so much for this. Ever since I read GG tried his first job by transcribing the hardest piece he could think of which indeed was a Shawn Lane tune, I was obsessed.
I believe that he did two or three. They were in two different Magazines i would have to go through a lot of archives to find them. Thank you for your good wishes . I will tell the rest of the Family. Yes more people are doing his songs that would make him very Happy. His Music Lives On++++++++
It sure is.This is one of my fav Lane tunes and man I am just blown away at how on the money every detail of this song was pefectly executed.I also cant believe there are only 3888 views.I thought this was brand new because I didnt find this until a week ago.
Guthrie made a big job here, it´s not easy to play like another guitarrist, everyone has his own style. Shawn is from another Galaxy., and Gutrie does not give the emotionality Shawn has in every note. Anyway incredible Gutrie here, very well done technically .
If I reload this and don't put "Guthrie Govan plays" in the title, you would never tell it's not Shawn. Don't be pricks, it's just perfect. Only Guthrie and a handful of guitar geniuses would play this song so awesomely.
Respect. It's just a testament to Shawns greatness, that one of the greatest living guitarists now can get very close, but can't quite nail this the way Shawn did.
there is a tabbed book for this song that Guthrie played for , it's not meant to have emotion and feel , he played it on a technical stand point to make a clearer understanding of how to play this song , hence the tempo being slower then the original... come on guys you know if Guthrie wanted to he could unleash on this beautiful peace
I have the same magazine and CD and it is 100% without a doubt Guthrie playing this. It's written in the magazine and Guthrie gives a write up and analysis of the song.
Despite what everyone says this was an amazing cover, Shawn was one of Guthries influences. This cover deserves credit not hate but hay everyone has an opinion and there is mine.

Such a pity we can’t actually see Guthrie playing this track. Wonder if this was recorded in the studio or played live. Studio I think. Always good to hear Shawn’s music being remembered.
Great vid ! I think each player in their own rights do things that the other couldn't do. And. That's what's gives them their own edge on how they use the guitar. A jam with these 2 would have been AMAZING !!
The 'Who's Best' vid is indeed top quality ;) If you haven't already, check out the Cornford website - the first clip on the 'audio' section (the aptly titled 'Ridiculous' considering the sheer technique of the man) should satisfy your 80's shred taste buds, especially if you're partial to a bit of the Yng.

Thanks for being so cool about letting us fans have the audio. Cheers!
GuitarThecniques In what year and month did Govan record this, which edition?
Thank you for posting this and Guthrie for Playing SHAWN would be Pleased. SHAWN's MOm , Diane BEAUTIFUL!!!!

❤️❤️
Oh my gosh I just saw this. Mrs. Lane, your Shawn... a gift to us all. Thank you!

The day that Guthrie played this, Shawn was smiling in Heaven...
Much respect for mister Guthrie Govan.
Lets all be honest and stop bashing on Guthrie...nobody else could cover this so well...respect to both Guthrie and Shawn (RIP)
I truly don’t understand the notion of comparing guitar players. Guthrie and Shawn are both monsters in their own regards and Guthrie covering this tune should be considered nothing less than a love letter. I’m truly happy I got to live to experience both of their music
Isn't that beautiful my brother that we can experience these things in our lifetime the music and the things in life I'll leave it as that okay God bless you
I think this is the only man that could do a shawn lane cover, and actually make it worthy. We love you guthrie.
Just like Lane, there is only one Govan. Unbelievable guitarists in each their own and both massively inspirational.
it's not Shawn, but you can tell Guthrie put some time, love & respect into this...not a whole lot of players could come this close...
Govan is perfect to cover Lane's music, he's got the skills AND the right feel.
That little slide/vibrato/trill thing at 0:32 is a dead give away that it's Guthrie Govan playing.
I'm four years late to comment but Shawn played slides and thrills like that all the time. Guthrie do too of course but in this case I think he's trying to emulate Shawn's playstyle.
@@dooboio7816 Yea it’s in the original song. Also four years late.
I was searching Shawn Lane covers and then I found this haha. Of course GG has the best Get You Back cover on TH-cam.

Shawn was my friend, and this rendition is a nice little tribute to his work.

Wow! You are so lucky. I missed out on his work. Trying to catch up. 💔 . Hurts to know he's no longer on the same plane of existence as us!
we love him so much my friend
Shawn seems like such a nice person...you were blessed sounds like.
I wanna thank Guthrie for keeping this music alive. Can´t stand this talk "There´s (was) only one Shawn Lane" ... sure, but he´s playing in heaven now and sends angels like Guthrie to make us hear and remember him.
Cynic changed the way I write and play music. Paul is such a humble but incredibly talented dude.
Why the hate?
This is more a tribute than a pure cover, I can surely feel both Guthries and Shawns presence here. When I see these negative comments I laugh and cry, so sad yet so funny.
Clearly someone didnt take the evolutionary steps with the rest of us!

My two favorite guitarists. Its a real shame that Shawn will never cover any of Guthrie's songs...now that would be a sight to see!
Such a phenomenal song written by such a phenomenal musician, this song brings goosebumps and a tear every time, just beautiful melodies with brilliance all the way through by Shawn. My cat likes this, and she likes Holdsworth too!
Your cat has excellent taste in guitarists!
it's illegal to feed cats antipsychotics

It’s crazy you can tell Guthrie actually had to get into Shawns brain and soul here , he almost is embodying him

Guthrie's clearly tipped his hat to the original studio version as well as the version on Powers Of Ten Live...flawless rendition!!
Hey brother, this is actually a cover of the 1993 Studio Version, rather than the '92 version with a different guitar solo, peace!
Superb cover..no one could have done it better...Shawn would be proud

Guthrie paid a great tribute to Shawn by doing this. Shawn would be proud :)
Absoluty Infinity Forever. .. Rispect for your Great Talent ... ☺😊😀/👍👌👏

Man, people are something else. I would have loved to hear Shawn playing a GG song to see if he can sound like him...

Yes I have this version on my computer. Send me a PM with your mail and i'll send it over.
excellent cover by guthrie

hes phrasing is spot on godly
His tone was amazing here!!!
Yes.
I've been learning this using Guthries transcription. By jove, it's tough. Beautiful tune!
