First heard this song when I was in High School. My local video store had a copy of an instructional VHS with a bunch of different guitarists. One of them was Shawn playing this track live at Musicians Institute. I'm 43 years old now and this tune still hits just as hard as it did when I was a kid. Nobody like Shawn.

I can easily say that's my favorite version of this wonderful song, as I like the production just a little bit better on this alternate version. Can't get enough of this one, really. Anyway, "Powers of Ten" definitely is an overlooked masterpiece of a record, from one of the best players to appear in the 90's (in a decade where amazing players like Petrucci, Vai, Gilbert & co. absolutely shone bright, you can say competition was very fierce in that department back then !). That's worth something... R.I.P. Mr. Shawn Lane, your incredible skills and artistry are sorely missed...

@@a.s.2426 so who's your favorite? I'd easily argue that Shawn has the most beautiful tone while maintaining such high complex phrasing and technique. All other guitarists I've ever heard end up trading great tone for some other aspect: Gilmour has impecable tone and feel, but 'lacks' (not in a bad way) in speed, Malmsteem has impecable technique and feel but not the most beautiful tone (same as Paul Gilbert - they have remarkable tones). I can think of 2 of the greats that manage to have both (tone + beautiful complex phrasing & technique) to some extent: Guthrie and Eric Johnson.
@@gcma1999 I think you are right that tone and technical playing are difficult to balance with one another and so they're not often found together. One of my favorite players, Greg Howe, has generally had a pretty terrible tone and I've always lamented it. In regards to beautiful tone in combination with technically complex playing, my mind goes to Eric Johnson (as you mentioned) but I also think of Frank Marino (some of my favorite guitar tones on record) and Gary Moore. In terms of true shredders (another notch up in speed), my mind goes to Steve Vai (on some of his recordings) and even Satriani on some of his earlier albums. I own just about the entire Shrapnel Records and Legato Records catalogs (meaning: a lot of the highest speed players from the past) and unfortunately not a lot of stand outs in regards to tone. Perhaps Darren Householder, Michael Lee Firkins. Another couple guys from other labels but from that same genre are Steve Stevens and Blues Saraceno. Good tones. In regards to Shawn Lane, I have to somewhat correct myself. He did have periods where he had, for me, quite a good tone. For example, if you check out the video "Shawn Lane with The Willys, Live from Memphis Sound October 8th, 1988" Beautiful sound. Also, his tone is decent on some of his work with Hellborg, for me. I think Shawn's sound changed later and also his recordings were of a pretty low production quality so that might have been a failure point.
@@GearHeadz101 In a sense I do believe shawns composed tunes are a lot more melodic in a musical sense, but gambale is a lot more jazzier, technically improvisational I think gambale is tastier, but as far as composed songs, I prefer Lanes approach, i place both in my top 5. Amazing players none the less, put them up there with holdsworth definately and Garsed. Centrifugal Funk is where you can really listen to all of them, and it shows that you really need all of them to compliment eachother, but get you back is a masterpiece.

Wow what a guitarist, I think many new fusion players, have been inspired, and copy Shawn. I wish more people heard his fantastic playing, but he was just too good, advanced for simple pentatonic blues kinda players.
Let's not forget Shawn loved him some good pentatonic blues. You should both imagine if Shawn's own attitude would have aligned with yours, and really wonder if his relative obscurity is because of these blues players you've fabricated. In years and countless videos, I've never seen the dismissive stance that you think exists from other players. I'm a simple pentatonic blues kind of player and find Shawn utterly magical.

That's what I love about Shawn, he understood that melody is king and knew when to let it rip and when to let it mellow. The more I listen to Shawn's vast array of recorded mastery, the more I realize just how truly gifted he was. He wasn't just a great player he was great at all things music. He had it all in spades!
