Forget any carpentry skills you have cause RVs aren't built by carpenters. I just turned an old camper into a manshed/cook house and had to fix alot of rot. Mine consisted of 2x4s ripped in half, adhesive and 9 billion staples. I know you can do it, just think outside the box and what a cool project!

I would see if I could use some of the wheels and tires off that bounder for the interim, save all the windows because if you can’t use them, maybe you can sell them to somebody and also the cabinetry for your new build
You have a blank canvas to create a work of art to be proud of. Those old wet bathrooms are cool. Had one in an old truck camper back when my kids were young.
I'm excited! Remove the skin first, then you have access to hidden screws! Also, you could use windows and doors from the Bounder!

Love the Name fits it well. I'm jealous that would be a great project. I think the age of it. It would be wood framing. I would try and change that up with aluminum much lighter. It already had a big block in it, so the 454 will fit nicely. 😂
Hey, I'm new to your channel and I'm an instant fan. I did want to chime in to say that this is a very similar setup to the one that @Sleeperdude rebuilt. He actually did a complete frame-up rebuild, and his looks great, so you should have a great time redoing this one.

That really is a much better RV nice find with the hood also yeah okay it needs some fixing but the memories you will have in this with your kids will be priceless. That bounder has so much good stuff in it and why not all the interior lights fixtures it's already got an updated kitchen maybe the awning some of the windows maybe a door all good stuff that if you're going all the way as to delaminating this and putting some steel into it why not. Those single pane windows sweat more than desired and that's never good for an RV.. Sleeper dude just did one and it's a pretty darn good watch.. I'm looking forward to seeing this come together for you and your family.

Yesterday I saw a newer Chevy 2500 with what appeared to be a 1960's Airstream cobbled on in place of the bed. This was at Harbor Freight in B/CS. The whole thing was painted white with what looks like house paint. y first thought was of this build and how much cooler this will be!! Try to stay cool in this heat!!
Hi Garth great choice there lots if work involved here take your time do it properly.what I would do only because propane is in my mind dangerous I would purchase a generator then you can have only one source electricity lot safer lot cleaner have the generator plumbed in to main fuel tank with a start button inside the cab & living quarters.I am sure you have your own ideas which will be just as good as its your project , I am eager to follow your journey from start to finish .Not that it matters I am your over the pond supporter UK I just love every thing rv theirs one rv I would purchase here it's a winnebago fuse it has either a bedroom slide out or dinet slide out ,a generator,lovely interior,3.2 litre engine fully automatic on a Ford chassis the only negative is IT'S left hand drive .bye for now I will tune in for your next rv build video.

OK, a better Hobsons Choice. Since you have the skills, it will be mostly sweat equity. I will be curious to see how it fares. I note some camper fix ups have used EV batteries vs lead acid.
Check out SleeperDude, they recently did a full restoration on a similar camper.

Although the 72 Chevrolet Camper is also a lot of work, I do understand that it is much more interesting than the bounder.
I'm afraid it's faster to rebuild the entire superstructure than to repair it. It would be nice if all the sheet metal could still be found. Also the orange part of the sheet metal.

Watch the video that the sleeper dude did they redid a camper much smaller than yours but still an older one and it turned out sweet just like that oldie will

That sure looks like an old Franklin chassis mount camper. Back in the day they were pretty high-end truck camper. I pretty much grew up in one and traveled up and down the eastern half of the United States in the bed over top of the cab. Lot of good memories.
Chads fab on youtube got one of those hes turning into a wrecker. The back body was too far gone

Billy Ray is going to be one sweet camper! What do you think about using aluminum for the framing? I'm sure it would increase the cost quite a bit but would help with weight. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it

Mine only needed a engine someone put a sbc in it I replaced it with a bbc

I think I read the Franklin is more rare and sought after
If I recall, the other RV is the P30HD (and should be IFS, instead of the I-beam front axle), which will get you disc brakes F&R and 19.5s. Probably has hydro boost too. Transmission will have the parking brake on the rear. It’d be cool to see that running gear on this truck. It would sure be a capable tow rig and a RV. Maybe with air suspension? Just throwing ideas. The sky’s the limit at this point. Good luck!

When you said the rear seal was leaking. If you plan on using that engine. You need to check the Crank end play. We had to R&R Alot of those back in 88. Because of the Crank end play.

My first exposure to RVs? I was about 8 years old. For Christmas, my parents got me a Tonka toy. It was replicated as the 1973 Winnebago Indian (wasn;t that a motorcycle? lol). Great Tonka toy. It was what we know as a Class A RV. It included 2 Barbie Doll like dolls, a man and a woman. They were the drivers and residents in the toy RV. For a toy, that Winnie was really equipped! There I was, a 10 year old boy, with my Tonka Winnebago Indian and 2 dolls. Gosh, that must have been about 1974? I'd pretend we were going to campsites, but I was the third one, maybe just a friend tagging along with the dolls? lol. The Tonka Winnie was quite large for a die cast toy. Maybe 2 feet long and 8 inches high. You could remove the roof to access the insides and put the dolls inside. The dolls had moveable joints, so they could stand in the galley, sit on the sofa or chairs, or lay down in the master bedroom. Even the bathroom had a plastic functioning door, you could open and close it! The Tonka also had a side door to the cabin, it was functional too.
Fast forward to 2024. I'm quite older now. No, I don't play with dolls (lol), but do play with real RVs.
I like the less known ones, especially vintage rigs. My current fave is the 1973 Commander, powered by a Chrysler 440, a Class A. Utilitarian, ugly, yet beautiful, a bread box on 6 wheels.
Hey Garth - I mentioned previously about turning the Bounder into a car hauler and forget the Franklin…hit the brakes! I changed my mind. I am excited for you and the “71” RV. So many thoughts and plans of what I would do. I can’t wait to see the next episode on “Billy Ray”. I agree to keep the bathroom as is. It does look to be in great shape, and vintage retro.
