After months away, I'm back with a new series! My hiatus was...interesting, to say the least, and really wasn't much of a vacation. But, I'm happy to be back, and I'll be having another new video out later this week! Stay tuned!
And, if you enjoyed this, don't forget to check out my Patreon, and maybe support the channel there to help me make bigger and better content: www.patreon.com/stuffweplay

I feel much the same way now! I love playing around with it and making little mini-adventures, but I don't think I have the time or energy to devote to making a full-on RPG anymore haha

Awesome dive with the first episode of RETROspective. I remember getting together with my older brother and best friend and creating these RPG style games on paper and then creating it on RPG maker. I always loved the character design and details of their background and loved the difficulty in making an enjoyable and playable game.
Way to come back with a Bang my friend.

    • @StuffWePlay

Thank you so much! This first episode was especially retrospective, as the game I showed off, in some ways, was almost like a time capsule taking me back over a decade!

Fun fact, I tried my hand at translating the manual for the first RPG maker for the Super Famicom back in the 90s. It was a nice project for my Japanese class I was taking in high school. Also, my brother the crazy bastard he is, somehow figured out how to import tiles from ps1 games (namely Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia into RPG Maker 2000 for Windows 98. Fun times.

Pro Tip for Switch Makers: Put automated events, especially complex ones, into "instances" aka. their own small maps, even if you have to copy a region on a bigger map for it - will increase your game's performance immensely. The less automated NPCs and cinematics directly on your bigger maps the better your game will perform. And on smaller "instance" maps that are copied from the big map, you can go crazy with cinematics more easily aswell.

Hey, you will be able to tackle the gyms in any order now in Scarlet and Violet, so all of Cobalt's features have been officially made it into the games!
But seriously though, Cobalt was waaaay better than my little story demo I made when I was 16. Good job regardless, you should be proud of your younger self. Good and official games are not that far from jank and copy paste ideas, we tend to underestimate ourselves because we know what we did. Successful people are not that different, they just got away with it.

    • @StuffWePlay

It's really beautiful to see those ideas happen in Scarlet/Violet - and also Crystal Clear haha! Seriously love CC

I genuinely love RPG Maker. There's a lot of potential with it, even with games using the RTP assets (Hell, I'm using 'em for one of my main projects). While it certainly still lingers, I'm fairly certain the "All RPG Maker games are bad" stigma has been dying down in recent years, which is good to see. :)
Some people will see a game is made in RPG Maker and scroll past, but that just actively grabs my attention usually. Lol.
(Also, ye, Pokémon Essentials is cool, I like it. GSC style is hard to do since you gotta change a lotta stuff to make it accurate to the style, but thankfully people have made kits for that exact purpose. :D)

Wow, what a series! I remember fiddling around with RPG Maker 95, then 2000, then 2003. I settled on RMXP for a good many years until I got this new computer. Haven't tried any of the newer ones. I also bought RPG Maker 2 AND a keyboard for the PS2 when it first came out. I also tried out RPG Maker 3, also for PS2. I've had a long history with the series! Good times, James. Good times!

    • @StuffWePlay
      @StuffWePlay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@StuffWePlay I recommend at least giving them a try, for sure. They were a bit tricky to get the hang of at first, though. I always preferred the PC versions because of being able to import custom stuff, as well as reworking scripts for custom effects and menus. I even tried out Pokemon Essentials for a short time and found it pretty handy. I never was able to fully complete a game though, just due to the huge amount of work and time that goes into it, but I always had fun with it!

I started with RPG maker 2003 by borrowing it from the Internet. There wasn't a official English release but there was a English translation patch done by a Modder who later got involved with the official English release that we have on steam right now. And yes I bought that one as well just to show support cause I got me hooked to RPG maker for a while.
RPG maker XP is my favorite, but I have to admit I haven't tried RPG maker MZ yet and I heard that one does take the layer system from XP. XP was great cause of their layer system, it allowed for so much more, I also digged the bigger characters. After they started with these weird little body big head ones. 2003, 2000, they had their style but XP looked better, after that it became much less detailed in the character department, and yes I know you can make your own, but we used to get the bigger ones standard.
The sad thing about RPG maker is that it became popular. Before the RPG maker scene was awesome. All these games people made, it was treasure cove for sure. Then it became popular and became the main engine next to Unity for scam projects and "This is my first game ever made, I put it on sale for 20 euros on steam plx buy kay thnx" projects. Steam is flooded with these lazy made first time ever projects, even though the scene itself has some very amazing proper games made with the engine. Games that deserve to be on steam but why bother now? No one buys those games anymore and won't get much attention there, might as well keep it within the community itself for free. It also caused rpg maker developers to get a bad name. I went to apply for a game developer education. I had done prior educations, finished, in multi media so I knew stuff already, but I wasn't a coder. They wanted to see things that I made and I was working on my own RPG maker made game so I decided to show that, sadly, everyone did so when I walked in they looked at it, rolled their eyes and bluntly said "Is this another rpg maker game? Ugh". I get it, but how is rpg maker different from a Unity other then that it's specialized in 2d rpg's? Needles to say, I didn't make the cut. So I became a movie editor lol, well not anymore, lost that job due to economic reasons, but I was one for 6 years while learning Unity atm. Still thinking about maybe getting MZ with the steam sale atm cutting the price in half for the fun of it.

I remember having the french translation of RM 2000 and 2003 (themselves translated from the version of Don Miguel) even now the official Steam version (that I bought out of nostalgia) don't have it. -_-
I even buy RPG Maker MV, three years that i have a project in it, but I don't have as much free time as I did at the time of RM2k and 2K3), i even found the only two games I finished creating on RM2k and 2K3, sorting out my old hardware (they were in old IDE hard drives), still fun to use this tool from time to time.
