I have a similar solution from Unique Auto. The main difference is that it doesn't need the long cable or disassembly at the front of the car: everything is installed under the back seats, next to the I-Drive unit. It intercepts the video signal and car's controls there.
Thank you for this absolutely awesome video, you def deserve at least 3 Billion likes and much more comments with gratitude, please post more cool tips and tutorials, Bless 😇
There are lots of how to install videos but your the first to show some of the functions. Any chance you could do a more in depth video of the functions using Android auto such as how to select music stored on the phone?
That's a great suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have any Android phones to demonstrate the features. If I find someone that wants to lend me their phone for a couple of days, I could make it happen.
Brilliant video, thank you. Once everything is setup, what is your experience when you get in the car? Do you need to press the Menu button for 2 seconds to switch to the MMI box, or does it switch to Carplay automatically?
The previous owner of my i3 put in a unit that doesn't have wireless android auto. I have the bimmer tech unit from my old car but I'll have to get a new harness to install it since the mini cooper had the head unit right behind the screen.
Thanks a lot for your comprehensive video as always. One question: if you last turned off the car having Apple Carplay connected, does it auto connect to your phone and open AppleCarplay automatically when you start the car the next time?
What happened to the original functions? Can I go "back" and see normal BMW display with it's functions, menu? Some technical setting regarding the car are there too, plus radio. If I forget my phone, can I go back to BMW display and use telephone, radio, nav, as before installation?
Yes, you can go back to the BMW system by holding MENU for 3 seconds. You can use all BMW functions including phone, radio, nav etc. It basically sits on the side and adds functionality without taking anything away. You can even make it start up automatically and connect to the phone or make it so you have to 'turn it on'. I like it automatic because by the time I put my seatbelt on, my phone is connected and I have my music, google maps and calendar reminders on the screen.
Hi, thanks for your way of explaining. Looks real simple to install. One question: I have an BMW i3 from 2018 with the bigger screen. After installing you probably are not able to use the screen anymore for the functions BMW offered? Like the graphic display of how your car is performing (graphs of the batteries e.g.)? No longer the BMW (stupid) nsavigation via the crappy HERE software?
Hi! You can still use all of the BMW software and functions and reversing camera etc. This is just an add on. You hold the menu button for 3 seconds and it switches between the systems. Thanks for watching!
Mine used to work fine. But then it started to randomly not turn on and sometimes turn on. it started to show me only black screen. Now when I press menu button it shows me night sky with the car logo and CARPLAY written underneath, and it stays on that screen. How do I make it work again?
I have one of these units on order, so looking at a lot of install videos and yours is very clear and precise. But one question, what does the antenna do? if it picks up GPS, would it be an advantage to site it under the bonnet/hood? Looking forward to getting it fitted and up and working. Then Google maps or Waze will be brilliant along with Spotify.
The antenna is actually for WiFi. Apple CarPlay uses WiFi to communicate with your phone after the first connection and that’s what’s for. Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps you install yours!
I guess you could. Mine came with the wire that goes to the front, so that's what I did. One thing I could see that maybe not be as convenient is the USB cable being under the seat. Then again, I don't think I'll be using it that much anyway.
The main reason why these modules cannot be installed under the rear seat is because of the signal loss due to the long monitor cable. If you want something that can be installed under the back seat in any case, check out our channel!
@@premiumretrofit Yes, I heard that explanation before. But then it would be up to the manufacturers of those devices to increase the output level. The original HU has no issues powering that long cable. It would lower the barriers to retrofit so much. I am actually put off taking apart half of the car.
@@kmusicmagazine to be fair, all you're really doing is removing some screws and popping off plastic. No electrical work required. It's the equivalent of replacing a children's toy battery or assembling a desktop PC.
Does it support wired android auto? Wireless sucks the battery life and makes my phone so hot for some reason so I would get this if it supports wired android auto through that usb port.
You don't have to put the unit in the front that long cable is for the BMWs with the head unit at the front of the car so you can install the head unit in the back en just switch the screen cable (the system is made to be easy to install you don't have to take all those pieces apart to do that 😮)
Hello thx a lot for this tutorial for installation :) I have just one question :p on my car bmw i3 I have the range extender with pétrol is it possible to enable and disable it with it ?
I have the Range Extender as well. The functionality remains the same as before, it’s just bigger and the graphics are slightly updated. You would have install the camera in the back, route the wire to the MMI Prime unit, plug it in and also connect the power (trigger wire). I have a somewhat similar video on what I did on my Z4: th-cam.com/video/0uwmB6B9OMw/w-d-xo.html
