    Big day for my little BMW i3 today! Since BMW never offered wireless CarPlay on pre-LCI BMW i3s, I decided to install an aftermarket add-on sold by BimmerTech. The CarPlay MMI Prime unit is plug in play and after watching this video you can install your own in about an hour! This unit also supports Android Auto and Apple AirPlay, if you'd like to stream your phone directly to the display of your BMW. You can also plug in a USB drive and play multimedia through this unit as well as charge your device. Front and rear cameras are fully integrated and without any configuration. The same goes for steering wheel controls and iDrive controller. I was also pleasantly surprised with the quality of the sound coming out of this unit, there is no hiss or noise that was noticeable.

    I have a similar solution from Unique Auto. The main difference is that it doesn't need the long cable or disassembly at the front of the car: everything is installed under the back seats, next to the I-Drive unit. It intercepts the video signal and car's controls there.

    There are lots of how to install videos but your the first to show some of the functions. Any chance you could do a more in depth video of the functions using Android auto such as how to select music stored on the phone?

      That's a great suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have any Android phones to demonstrate the features. If I find someone that wants to lend me their phone for a couple of days, I could make it happen.

    I have one of these units on order, so looking at a lot of install videos and yours is very clear and precise. But one question, what does the antenna do? if it picks up GPS, would it be an advantage to site it under the bonnet/hood? Looking forward to getting it fitted and up and working. Then Google maps or Waze will be brilliant along with Spotify.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The antenna is actually for WiFi. Apple CarPlay uses WiFi to communicate with your phone after the first connection and that’s what’s for.
      Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps you install yours!

    Hi, thanks for your way of explaining. Looks real simple to install. One question: I have an BMW i3 from 2018 with the bigger screen. After installing you probably are not able to use the screen anymore for the functions BMW offered? Like the graphic display of how your car is performing (graphs of the batteries e.g.)? No longer the BMW (stupid) nsavigation via the crappy HERE software?

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! You can still use all of the BMW software and functions and reversing camera etc. This is just an add on. You hold the menu button for 3 seconds and it switches between the systems. Thanks for watching!

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the Range Extender as well. The functionality remains the same as before, it’s just bigger and the graphics are slightly updated. If you don’t have the range extender menu in your iDrive, you can enable it like I show in this video:

    Mine used to work fine. But then it started to randomly not turn on and sometimes turn on. it started to show me only black screen. Now when I press menu button it shows me night sky with the car logo and CARPLAY written underneath, and it stays on that screen. How do I make it work again?

  • @DaGamerGuy25

    Does it support wired android auto? Wireless sucks the battery life and makes my phone so hot for some reason so I would get this if it supports wired android auto through that usb port.

    What happened to the original functions? Can I go "back" and see normal BMW display with it's functions, menu?
    Some technical setting regarding the car are there too, plus radio.
    If I forget my phone, can I go back to BMW display and use telephone, radio, nav, as before installation?

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, you can go back to the BMW system by holding MENU for 3 seconds. You can use all BMW functions including phone, radio, nav etc. It basically sits on the side and adds functionality without taking anything away. You can even make it start up automatically and connect to the phone or make it so you have to 'turn it on'. I like it automatic because by the time I put my seatbelt on, my phone is connected and I have my music, google maps and calendar reminders on the screen.

    I still don’t understand why it doesn’t work to install that box under the rear seats. The monitor cable is already there.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess you could. Mine came with the wire that goes to the front, so that's what I did. One thing I could see that maybe not be as convenient is the USB cable being under the seat. Then again, I don't think I'll be using it that much anyway.

    • @premiumretrofit
      @premiumretrofit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main reason why these modules cannot be installed under the rear seat is because of the signal loss due to the long monitor cable. If you want something that can be installed under the back seat in any case, check out our channel!

    • @kmusicmagazine
      @kmusicmagazine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@premiumretrofit Yes, I heard that explanation before. But then it would be up to the manufacturers of those devices to increase the output level. The original HU has no issues powering that long cable. It would lower the barriers to retrofit so much. I am actually put off taking apart half of the car.

    I have a BMW 120Ah fully charged 2019, and I purchased the Apple Carplay when they sold it at a discount on BMW's website. THE ANNOYING thing which I didn't expect was the 2019' model has this shitty interface. Where the long screen has 40% of the screen locked for additionals; like compass and other useless things I do not use.
