      It has surprised a lot of people who original thought it was a joke..
      The REx can literally recharge the battery as you drive, not just hold the charge as long as you drive moderately. Unlocking TJA to drive at freeway speeds will give the car self driving, lane keep assisting.

    • @donswier
      @donswier 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      36hp range extender had me doubtful at first. HOWEVER...
      Analogy time:
      Consider the gas engine is acting as a small river continually filling a hydroelectric reservoir (aka battery).
      The powerplant (electric motor) at the dam can provide PLENTY of power (170hp + instant torque) unless you mash the accelerator 100% of your driving time (nobody does, not even F1 or WRC drivers).

    • @TexMex421
      @TexMex421 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@mamadouaziza2536 This is not true. Once coded, the range extender can be turned on with a battery level between 6 and 75% . At that point it will maintain the level at whatever it was set. Start at 60% and the REx will keep the car at 60%. If you climb a long hill or go 75+ mph for a long time and get to say 55%, the REx will recharge the battery back to 60% but not higher.
      Also, the lane keeping will only work at 25mph and below. It's meant for traffic jams. I have one and really like it, but coding is not magic.

    Holding battery level is a good choice for long distances. Put the hold on a function key and select that when you go uphill or when you need to cover some distance to the next fast charger.
    Expect around 250km/150mi with a good hold strategy. However, use fast chargers to fill up before you run out, the i3 is very frugal on electricity, but not so on gas.

    Old Euro-spec i3 Rex owners' trick: tie the "Hold State of Charge" toggle to one of the 8 function buttons. It transforms the experience. Long uphill coming up? Rex on. Downhill? Rex off and let the regen take care of it.

    • @TexMex421
      @TexMex421 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why though? The REx does not add power. You can't climb the hill any faster. If you want to use the REx, use it, but you don't need it to climb hills. And regen works while the REx is working, no reason to turn it off on the downhill.

    To sorta simplify or understand this coding feature of this BMW & all models from the last 10 years or so., Its more or less an advanced settings options you are changing. You really aren't tuning or doing much besides turning features on/off & or adjusting levels that aren't "available" in the country you are in. It's far cheaper for a manufacture to integrate all options for global sales within the cars computers that can be edited to what county it is being sold in. This is a great tool to have if you have a BMW and there are a lot of really good programs, apps, or even usb sticks that can be shipped to you that enable/disable features such as this.
    **Before anyone does it, understand that you are modifying the systems from factory and BMW can 100% tell, so warranty stuff may get tricky depending**

For years there have been super fuel efficient diesel and small displacement engines for passenger cars and light trucks that we can't even sniff. If it really is all about making wise choices for the environment, a diesel that gets 50+mpg or a 1.2 -1.4 L gas turbo that gets 40+ mpg why are we force-fed the 20-30 mpg engines and told to like it? Most obvious example..... The "new" ranger... 1 engine choice... really?!

    It is my understanding and experience that you cannot change the available gas tank size on the 2014-2015 models. I tried by following your tutorial and as it is shown on your video, the range did not change. So, you guys were not looking at a calculation error, you did not change the gas tank size. Has any one found a work around? Maybe doing it in the expert mode?

    I'm getting one and I'm going to mod the heck out of the REX motor -- just for fun. LOL. Plan: software mod, electric motor/alternator/inverter/battery liquid cooling mod, K&N CAI, iridium spark plugs (?), either aluminum or kevlar/carbon fiber gas tank with a fire retardant layer, custom intake/exhaust manifold, cat mod(?), port and polish, micro supercharger/turbo charger depending how much room I have, ECU tune,

      Bimmercode is a long established app, no doubt with checksum verification or other means to confirm an accurate transfer, but a wired connection can be even more flaky if there is something loose!

    so are you able to fill the tank to 2.4 gallons after this software update?

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They always could physically fill the tank to 2.4 gallons and you have to fill it to the top because the computer would limit use to about the top 1.9 gallons. With the update, the computer will no longer limit the use to the top 1.9 gallons and will instead use the full/true gas tank capacity of 2.4 gallons (or very close to it).

    • @TexMex421
      @TexMex421 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no. The i3 has this fuel tank restriction to reduce it's gas range to less than it's electric range. That way California (40% of the US EV market) counts it as fully electric for tax purposes. So it would be legal with a 10-20 gallon tank, but the taxes would be higher.

  • @oldwortex5818
    @oldwortex5818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not sure if I get it right. So you spent close to 100 usd to code the car to get 3 miles LESS on a same fuel and calling it a great hack ? What am I missing here ? I understand that your goal was to increase the mileage by allowing the gas tank to "see" the full 2.4Gallon versus 1.9 but that is still not explaining how you went from 70 to 67 miles range on a same fuel.
    The half a gallon remains in a tank when it shows empty, right ? Well not sure I really need this code if the range will drop. I think it should be explained what and why did it change exactly that dropped the range on fuel.

    It’s not pushing the car with the 34 horses it’s only charging the battery 🔋 please spread correct information and I road 65 up and down hills no issues over exaggerate something that’s not issues but doing this does make the car way more worth and everyowneer should do but if you don’t your cars Rex has plenty power uphill at 60 Alex on autos showed it!

    • @TexMex421
      @TexMex421 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! and no. It's making electricity to trying and maintain the battery at the level it started. On my car that starts at 6%. if I was climbing a MOUNTAIN, or driving 80+ MPH, the battery would drop to 3% and lower at which point the car would kick in to a low power mode and slow down. Running the heater (especially if it's really cold outside) makes this happen sooner.

  • @johnnyzee383
    @johnnyzee383 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought a 2015 i3 (my third one), and when the dealership found it was coded, they said whatever remaining warranty on the battery was there is no longer. I asked for an explanation and they said that because someone added aftermarket software the warranty is null and void. When I tried to explain that there is no added software and that the only thing that was done was ENABLING some of the existing software, they said I was wrong. They then did an update on the software and now the battery KAPPA which previously said 16.2KW now reads 15.4KW. Its amazing how stupid people are even "professionals".

    • @TexMex421
      @TexMex421 ปีที่แล้ว

      BMW has never and will never honor the warrantee on the battery anyway. They simply recondition the battery and charge you for brining it in.

      @@aimlessdrive8723 Laws??,,what are you talking about lol.what does any "law" have to do with a warranty on a vehicle??..you are like the imbeciles at the dealer who think that by ENABLING options on the EXISTING software you are adding aftermarket software which is just an excuse to void the warranty. In other words I was not "messing" with the ECU , just enabling what the European versions already have.
