King of tokyo is a dumb game. A fun dumb game. King of Monster island is its smarter co-op cousin. I always had a disconnect that Richard Garfield designed King of Tokyo, because it was such a slap stick mess. But here his designer chops come through delivering a very solid, fun and clever co-op experience in the King of Tokyo universe. I reckon this will surprise some folks with how solid it is.

I won this at Wellycon, it’s great but too easy for experienced gamers, you’ve got to crank up the difficulty. I totally agree re KoT, I sold both of those but have now ended up with this, I seem forever destined to own a King game. My biggest problem with it is all I ever want to do is roll the monster dice in the volcano.

Protip: place an elastic band a few cm above the base of the volcano. The dice hit the band and softly roll into the the region, as opposed to rocketing off the edge.

Great video! I love how quick and informative your videos always are. Keep up the awesome work!

I might grab this one. The family likes coops and if i can sneak something a little more complicated past them in a King of Tokyo wrapper, it could be a hit.

Oh yes, absolutely. And its honestly not much of a step up either. Especially if you run the monster and manage its moves

    Looks great!
KoT always goes on a little long for my tastes too but I think that wouldn't be as much of an issue for a co-op vs the big bad. The ease of teaching KoT to total newbies and then watching mindless, dice laden, fun ensue is worth a little lag at the end to my mind.
Presume an expansion or two will bring in a few more opponents and add in more mechanics too? Will be interesting to see where they take it.

Seems very expandable for sure. Different takes on the boss monster. Drawing inspiration from games like Aeons end, even though its a deck builder, wouldnt be bad for it either

Thanks for the video! Do you think it has enough variety to last at least maybe 10 plays and still be fun? Seems like the kind of game that might do with a bit more variety. Also, I kinda wish some of the power up stuff from KoT could be used here to expand the monster roster. Random thoughts, though!

Instead of the monster power ups, they have the allies which are pretty cool. Honestly, if you can beat all 6 bosses in 10 plays, you are better at the game than I. That's for sure. But like pandemic, you can play this endlessly. I don't think novelty is needed each time.

I want this almost exclusively for the new monsters

Well I had zero interest in this until 3 minutes ago. King of Tokyo is great fun in short bursts and I was sceptical the co-op version might just remove the tension and interaction. Might be great to play with the kids...

King of Tokyo is one of my most played games, and my friends also really enjoy co-op games, so I thought this sounded like a great mashup. Until you described it as "moderately complex," that is. One of the biggest draws for me about King of Tokyo is how quick it is to teach and simple it is to play.
That worry was quashed when you taught the whole game in a minute and a half, and you said it was still Yahtzee-like dice-chucking at its core. I think my friends would really like this one.

The only real additional complexity is managing the baddy. That to me adds a whole extra level of complexity above KoT. But, only 1 person needs to know how to do that

Is the boss automated? Or does a player have to play him?

      Automated

I was looking forward to play this with my 6 year old but maybe ill wait a bit.
funny how complex it seems compared to king of tokyo

I think it might be ok if you run the monster and leave them to their turns.
