The main reason I decided to do a review of Formula D is that our review of Heat is coming out shortly. And i feel like its the right time to look at Heat's venerable ancestor in the formula 1 car racing game niche. Keep an eye out for our heat review next week

Good call. I've not played FD, but it's very clearly a direct inspiration for Heat with the gear shifting, dangerous corners, and wear/heat systems.

I don't own any racing games, but 'Heat' is likely to be my first. BGA got me hooked on it.

An old favorite of mine! I always preferred the advanced rules, mostly for the more distinctive characters and special abilities.

Amazing, I just picked up this classic a day ago and feel this will be a fun roll and move for my game group when we don't want to burn our brains with the latest Lacerda game. Reminds me of an older version I have from the 80's, Speed circuit. ( less the dice. ) Thanks for covering it.

Fortunately we bring our own engine noises. I find this is a game that you have to play more than once because newcomers cannot resist the d30, hit the wall, and then it's not much of a race. It's lots of fun on subsequent plays.

      TOP GEAR OR DEATH!
      Ok, so you choose death.
      ANOTHER GAME PLEASE!

I remember playing this years ago at a local game store. We didn't have enough players for D&D so we played board games instead, including this one. I realized watching this that a lot of core mechanics in Heat, like corners, gears, and wear on your engine as a resource you need to manage, feel like natural continuations from Formula D, not to mention the push your luck elements. I wouldn't recommend it over Heat, but it's still pretty fun.

Pretty much my thoughts. Heat feels like formula D with an extra decade or two of game design experience

the first time i played this game was with a group of 10+ people - we got this out since it's one of the few games that could support a large party. very fun to roll dice for movement, less fun when you're waiting 10-15 minutes between rolls as everyone calculates their optimal movement! still enjoy the game with smaller groups (and with our house rule of 60 second turns), but i've found myself going back to Heat and Downforce more often than Formula D.

2:32 This move is ilegal: You HAVE TO follow the printed arrows on curves.
3:17 GT Road Races are not exclusive to Advanced rules. It can be played with the 18 WP scorecard -as written in the basic rules manual.

Fun video and always enjoy your 3 Minute Summarys. The translation of the Rules book is not great. So I could be wrong. But I believe there is an error at 2:15, as you changed lanes after over-shooting the corner. Reading carefully, it seems there are TWO penaltys: the wear you describe AND when you overshoot, you may not change lanes after the turn is completed, for the rest of that move. Kinda makes sense and potentially multiplys the bad news when a turn is well over-shot.

You are correct. I occasionally get rules wrong, which is why i always say "read the rulebook" as well as watching our vids

@@3MBG Although I'm glad I bought the game, like others (I've read) you just have make some house-rules as a number of rules are just not clear, poorly worded or such. Otherwise, a fun title for a group with the right mentality.

Formula D was my go to racing game before Heat was released. I'm probably going to try and sell my copy of Formula D, since I don't see a reason to play it instead of Heat.

I'd say f1 is more kid friendly, but yeah, Heat is the better game for sure

Could there be a solo with like a pace-car or something similar? I guess it wouldn't be very fun without a few strategems that the ai car might move between, but you have a car moving at high average for the turns and then see how much you're willing to risk based on progress from prior dice rolls. I guess this is the kind of game that demands more reactivity...

I think borrowing HEATS system of having the cars speed based on what corner is coming up would be a good start point.

_Heat: Pedal to the Metal_ is a better game maybe, but as a former F1 fan, I prefer the real-life tracks.

      @3MBG  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I have to agree, even if one of the track packs is Sochi, one of the worst tracks F1 has ever been to :)

Totally fair, i'm keeping both for the foreseeable future. But I'm also an f1 tragic (I was watching the 1982 San Marino GP last night)
