  • The upcoming trip is bringing all sorts of maintenance needs down on us to get the bikes prepared. In this video, I will detail all the tools, and supplies I used to make the tire change on the Honda Africa Twin DCT a quick and easy job. I installed a new set of Motoz Tractionator GPS tires so I can grip the ground on our trip to the Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route in just under three weeks.
    You will find a full list of supplies I used for my tire change and brake pad change below:

    Liked that you used tools you would carry on the bike rather than workshop ones.

      It was an idea that was given to me when I first started working on the bike and it just seemed to make a lot of sense to me.

    How was the BDR? My wife and I did section 6 to 5 and back to 6 again with the alternate (300 miles) for my Birthday this past May. We want to run back down to Harpers Ferry just to spend a little more time down there. Cool town.
    We did it on our dual sports. Her and XT250 and myself a DR650.
    However, and the reason that let me to this video..
    We just got ourselves an Africa Twin and a CB500X for her.
    Still have and will always love our dual sports.. just now have bigger bikes for bigger things.
    The only thing you were missing from the tire change was your swear jar!

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The BDR was awesome. There is a vid up here somewhere of the whole experience. Congrats on the new bikes. As experienced riders, even on the big bikes, you should have a blast the whole way.
      My swear jar just goes back into bike stuff so it feels a little counterproductive at times.

    I don't take the chair guard off. I always have problems breaking the bead but find the side standing makes the job a lot easier. It takes me about an hour to fix a puncture when I'm out riding off road. Great footage. Thanks

      Yeh, you can probably get away without removal but it makes it so much easier to align if you can see the whole length of chain. Thank you very much for watching and leaving feedback.

    Another great video👍👍👍
    I'm surprised you didn't go for tubeless mod on the rear tire I guess you didn't have too many flats on your trips!?
    I have same tires on my at and I like them
    It's always good to have little helper around ,let him learn to be handy one day

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to go tubeless on a previous iteration and couldn't get the tire to seat after doing all the work for the wheel. It was a major disappointment but I might give it a shot again.
      The little helper is going to have to learn how to be more helpful before he becomes a regular garage participant. ;-)

    Great video. Good luck on the MABDR! I live in Central PA and regularly ride the sections in Michaux. If you need anything while coming through, feel free to reach out.
    Curious to see how you balance your tires, what tools you use, etc.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will get a video out about the balancing. It is pretty slap dash process but I will tell you everything I know about it on the next change.
      Thank you for the kind words about the MABDR and I will definitely be reaching out as we come through if we have a moment. Is there any decent place to stay at when we get up in that area? We are looking to camp rough as often as possible.

    • @mph335
      @mph335 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check DCNRs website out for the rules and camp spots in Michaux. Mostly primitive and free. If you want more designated spots with bathroom/showers you can hit up pine grove furnace. www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateForests/FindAForest/Michaux/Pages/Camping.aspx
      Beyond Michaux, there are campsites at Fowler’s Hollow and then Poe Valley and Poe Paddy. Further north would be Colton State Park / Pine Creek valley area.

    Another tip, any fastener with threads get anti-seize grease. You’ll be glad you used it next time you do a similar repair. And torque your axle properly, you probably wont have a torque wrench with you in the field, but you’ll get a sense of the proper tightness. Too tight ruins bearings, too lose stuff falls off!

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great tip! I didn't include it on the vid but torquing all the bolts is a good idea while in the shop. I may not be an option on the road but we do the best we can while in the shop. Thank you for the watch and feedback.

    This presentation is not bad, however, would have been excellent and quite useful especially for a novice IF: Background music was not so aggressive and loud, if your camera setup and angle of views were more accurate, if you actually demonstrated the step by step the whole process and as an added bonus you could have done the front tire replacement too. Please, consider making another video while respecting the above points, thanks.

    • @BeGoneForGood

      Thank you very much for the feedback and I will certainly consider doing another video as I have to make my summer tire change in just a little bit. It would be nice to try it over with what I have learned over the past year. I appreciate the view and the feedback.

    Thanks for posting this! one question, is it necessary to remove the sprocket hub assembly or did you just do it to help save your fingers when dismounting and remounting the tire?

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t know if it is a HAVE to thing but it isn’t about my fingers. It is about working with the rim with that massive thing pointed downward. It would make the job so much more difficult and it’s removal and replacement is easy. The hub just slides out and back it. No screws or anything. The rubber pieces just drop right back in and it is super easy.

    Hi Chad at 10:57 there is a blue thing on the chain, what is it? I looked through your tools you used and you have two Honda spanner’s I guess one must be the blue thing, used for alignment??? Looking forward to your trip video’s

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That little blue piece is the Motion Pro Chain Alignment Tool and it is a miracle worker. It makes that otherwise tedious process pretty simple by just aligning the metal bar with your chain. I don't know if I included a link in the description so I will include one now. Thank you very much for watching and asking. I hope we can do right by you for the upcoming trip vids.

    Thanks for this. Gonna give it a go myself, just so I have some idea. Is it possible to take axle hub nuts off (and tighten them back up) from the torque spec or do you need an extra bar to slip over the wrench? Thanks.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't use a torque wrench to do it (I know, I know...) but you can use just the wrenches and a bit of body weight to pop them loose.

      This was from Salon di Sport Clips and I think she was a little overzealous with the clippers because she really seemed to enjoy cutting all my hair off. I appreciate the good luck and after last year with Utah, I will be very happy to have an easy run. Hopefully, the documentation will be better also.

    Hey Chad, nice job. How many miles on the old rear pads.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The old rear pads went around 18k miles but I rely on the rear drag for any slow maneuvers I am doing so I expect them to burn out pretty fast.

    Hi 👋🏼 what is this little blue thing called.... when you were putting back the tyre ... the thing which prevented the new tyre to slip back from the rim.
    This is super useful...

    Couple of tips, expand new tire with pieces of 2x 4 between the beads, leave tire in hot sun or in front of a heater prior to install. Partially inflate tube before placing in tire (helps avoid pinch flats.)

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are all great tips and probably would have helped with installation. Anything to make this process easier would be a welcome addition. Thank you.

    What's the wire thing you use to pull the valve stem through the rim? did you make that? or did you buy it ?

    • @BeGoneForGood

      I did not make it but it is a great tool to have at the ready. It’s almost too inexpensive to not have for these jobs.

    And after this procedure you can throw away the rim. Use protectors to save the rim from scratches! 😢

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe we have different ideas of how we are going to use this bike because a few scratches on the rims will be the least of my worries when it comes to bumps, scrapes, and nicks.
      Protection is great but it GREATLY increases the difficulty and I’d argue the danger of changing the tire. Revel in the character that a few scratches brings to the bike and move forward.

  • @michaelskinner896
    @michaelskinner896 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It doesn't appear that you used rim protectors. You don't care about your expensive wheels? I'd want some protection for metal to metal contact, but everybody has their take on how their MC looks.

    • @BeGoneForGood
      @BeGoneForGood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right that everyone kind of has their own thing and how the bike looks isn't really tops on my list. I have a ton of scarring on this bike from all sorts of dings, bangs, and falls so scratches on the rims are not my concern really. I just want to get through a tire change as easily as possible.
