  • Here is a good old Midland 3001 precision series set from 1982, using the Maxon built chassis.
Radio ended up at 3.9W @ 13.8V . Receive was better than spec.
On this set, the reference crystal had to be replaced as it had dropped under acceptable frequency range (27.79062 on ch 20 rather than 27.79125Mhz). This was replaced with one from a set the customer had previously donated to this channel as scrap, so no charge for this part.
On receive, the I.F. was considerably out. Realignment provided a full cure.

If I had to guess, and that's all I can do really, is that Midland probably made their own kit back in US tube days and not since. But that's only a guess, since I don't know that they were around in tube days. Save for oddities like the Browning Golden Eagle, the tube stuff was pretty much gone by 1970.

I had a Midland 4001 from the same era.
I got an old de-funked tube frequency counter test gear box and took out and scrapped the innards.
Got some sheets of copper clad board for the front and rear sections (I was working at GEC Coventry as a test engineer at the time so could get hold of these).
Drilled and shaped holes for switches, control knobs 7 Segment Displays for the CB, the SWR meter and CB meter and changed the mechanical channel switch to a circuit that changed the channels up and down by means of 2 momentary push button switches.
Put the CB, SWR meter and PSU in the box so everything was a single entity.
It looked pretty good even if I do say so myself.....
No idea what eventually happened to it though.....🙄
Looking at the rats nest inside this 3001 took me back......Nice video 👍

a trick i learnt with the polythene final driver coil is soften the wax with a hairdryer, totaly safe and always worked ,i instinctively cringe at the sight of iron stabbing any coil
if i had a core someone had already cracked i would try a few pf of cap parralled (primary side i think, cant remember for sure) with crosssed fingers , again not having sufficeint kit to know if i was causing other issues

My Pye training regarding cores was indeed a hairdryer & I do have one here solely for such a purpose. Other training mentioned earwax drops.

Always wondered what chassis Midlands use? Cybernet uniden or their own design?
