  • These budget base station are in fact a Spirit 40F transportable radio is a big box with a power supply from Taiwan in 1982.
After changing all the electrolytic capacitors in the powr supply (one was duff) & the 1000uVone on the main radio PCB (which was also duff), I was able to set up the power supply & align the transmit power to a full 4W.
On the receive side, the radio' I.F. was considerably out of alignment severely affecting the squelch. After realignment we had around 0.57uV for 12dB SINAD.
The customer asked if the meter could be repaired. I stripped the front panel off..and cleaned it whilst off the radio. I dismantled the meter & discovered the S/RF meter coil to sadly be open circuit. The SWR meter coil was OK, but he mechanism jammed. Unfortuneately neither meter could be restored, though at least the SWR meter jumps 3mm when you go into transmit now.
Most of the metes on these sets are presenting as faulty. We have to bear in mind that these radios are now more thsn 40 years old & they were fitted with a very cheap meter.
Thee sets always hum on transmit, though a PSU rebuild helps dramatically as in this case.

Iconic Radio. I remember going around to other CBers houses and seeing them, never owned one myself.

i still laugh every time you tell us that this base was made from a transportable set I believe you but cant believe that they had the nerve to do so.

As you saw, there were two duff capacitors in the power supply. Listen to it on the 'on the air' test; yes there is a slight hum as there always is on this type of set, but a massive improvement.

Why use the name Murphy? They had their own brand name. I suppose they thought they would sell better with a known brand name on them.

At the time, Great Universal mail order cataloge group had bought the Murphy brand name & it was they who organised & bought in the Murphy DS602 mobile & Murphy CBH1500 base station.

@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Ah yes, I forgot about Great Universal. I would love a Home base to see if I can get rid of the hum, cheaply. The only ones that crossed my path were not working very well. No one offered me one when everyone lost interest in CB.🙁
