Tesla FSD v12 Has Changed Transportation Forever w/ James Douma
Tesla's FSD v12 Software Runs 10,000x Faster Now - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
FSD 12.3 is incredible!! We've had our Model 3 four years now and over 60K miles. We've had all major car brands from US, Germany, and Japan and nothing comes close to our Tesla M3 and Model Y... Zero maintenance, easy long distance travel, low fuel cost, and best of all is FSD which has saved our lives a few times. Amazing! Safest car on the planet. If you care about your life, or your family's life, buy a Tesla. Statistics says so. Don't listen to the media....
Perfectly expressed!!!!
I've had a similar experience with the Tesla brand. I can't see myself switching back to ICE. Not because I dont like ICE but Tesla just has a better all around product.
FSD or not Tesla cars have accident avoidance.
We were turning into our subdivision when an idiot on a bicycle wasn't looking up and was about to fly into the side of our car. My foot was halfway to the brake pedal when the car stopped. He looked up at the last second yelling " holy shit" and then flying in front greatly relieved. We were in no physical danger but he would have put a dent into our new car.
We also had a semi truck back into our Y while it was parked. Sentry mode alerted my wife and she was able to catch the driver before he took off.
We used to love Toyota's for their gas and go reliability. Our Tesla makes a Toyota look like junk. 😁
$7 of electricity gets us 300+ miles and I level 2 charge for free next to my work. Once you go EV there's no other way. 😄
💯💯💯
@@SmokinPaul The Tesla community is growing!!
Only 20 minutes in and I could easily listen to James for hours on end, his presentation skills, and knowledge level are astounding as is his love of what he talks about, it shows!
Compared to GMs CEO!
James: King of intense but interesting monologues.
I love James's content (despite his slightly gravely voice) and he's full of great info. Love his quote, "I spent all my time being shocked", lol!
@@Myrslokstok Hah!
Agreed, most other long talkers are just saying a bunch of unnecessary BS just to hear themselves but James packs so much interesting detail into his responses that it makes me more attentive rather than puts me to sleep.
I’m 92 and I find the 12.3 update to be whipper snapping outstanding.
Took my mom for a ride in my Tesla and used FSD with it tonight. She is in her late 60s and has trouble driving at night. She loved it!
Yeah, Well I took my mom for a ride in my Diesel K4500 and used MKTD... She's in her 70's and has trouble not thinking that everything I do is irritating!.... So... 👅
I'm 72 and have subscribed to FSD three times since 2022. And when folks asked my opinion I said "It's like a 15-year-old with a learner permit" or "It's like a 90-year-old little old lady". But with V12 even in CHILL mode, the acceleration is more aggressive than how I drive so I wish I could turn that down a bit. And it HOLD's speed approaching a stop longer than I do. But it's brilliant and I would TRUST it implicitly. I have a 2022 Y with HW3. I have a 2K mile road trip coming up in May and will subscribe for that trip.
Please don't trust it
Watched the whole thing. As a software architect, James is 100% spot on. This video was gold mine of information and conviction in Tesla. James is the bomb!
Saturday I received a software update for my Model Y 2023. I scheduled it for overnight as it seemed to be just some minor changes. I turned the car back on Sunday afternoon because I needed to go to the store and got a great surprise: FSD v12 was made available for testing. I set it to navigate to the local recycling center and then to a location in Fredericksburg 22 miles away. Wow! It had a little hesitation finding its way through our neighborhood which is a series of unmarked, narrow private roads with speed bumps. Once on the public roads it was in its element. Smooth acceleration and deceleration, it changed lanes for turns, decelerated and made turns like I would do it. It drove me to both destinations without intervention except at the stop at the recycling center which is completely unmarked! It heeds stop lights and signs, speed limit signs that I never even noticed before and adjust for speed bumps and changes in road levels. It is incredible! I’ll be buying more stock and will be buying the FSD for permanent use.
I bought FSD primarily for road trips, because I’m unwilling to give up the joy of driving “Scoot” in town. That said, I’ve experimented with the various versions, just for kicks. V12.3.1 is different, and is fun to “supervise.” That has changed my purpose from curiosity about its behavior, to “shareholder responsibility” for providing data to Tesla. That was a surprise.
A very valuable set of data, and just what I had envisioned when using early versions of FSD. Skilled experienced drivers can/will provide much needed input regarding emergency reactions over time, as well as little stuff that minimizes mechanical wear, and makes the drive more comfortable. Looking forward to contributing.
We've taken many long cross country trips in our Y. Driving long distances just supervising takes all the stress and mental drain away. Not only is it easier you can pay much more attention to the road and traffic around you. We arrive feeling rested and relaxed instead of tired and mentally drained.
We also have a foldable mattress and privacy curtains that easily fits in the rear sub trunk. On the way to and from our destination we sleep in the car (camper mode). We used to use Planet Fitness for a morning workout and shower but now that they've gone woke we'll have to figure something else out.
It's easy, it's fun, it saves money and it's the safest car on the road. Oh and the seats are the most comfortable I've ever experienced. ❤️
James Douma’s knowledge is amazing!
His knowledge plus his ability to articulate complicated concepts is unmatched. Unreal insights! This guy is a legend IMO
Insane how knowledgeable in engineering and how basic his understanding of business strategy.
He just casually took apart this idea that Tesla raised FSD price to limited liability. Wow.
James is mind blowing by explaining this technology by dumbing it down for most of us.
He knows a few things about the subject.
If HW3 was made for NN/GPUs couldn’t Tesla use all that idle compute to work through the training data while millions of cars sit in the garage? Why not use use that hardware instead of giving Nvdia millions for H100. Use the cloud to make a distributed Dojo across the 10 million Teslas out there.
I have learned so much about AI from him. Still no expert by any means
Where is his resume?
I’d like to hear George holtz this
What a masterclass by James. His best ever!! What a treasure James is for the Tesla community. Farzad...you are superb at just letting James riff on. Congratulations!
So true!
He was SO cool to just watch and soak in.
Exactly!

I got the free trial for v12 after discontinuing v11 for its instability after a year and it's mind-bogglingly good.
Did it come as an update, or did it just appear as an option on the Autopilot menu?
@@thefish5861 I received Software Update Version v11.1 (2024.3.6) and the free 30day trial email was received 30 minutes later.
I could not wait. I bought v 12 this morning 4am. Drove to tesla service center to charge n upload fsd. It installed and next payment due may 31st. So credited me 1 month
@@thefish5861 I updated to v11.1 (2024.3.6) and the free trial of FSD email was sent 30 minutes later.
@@kenmartin5299 You had to go to the service center? No an OTA upgrade?
At last James has explained why 5 year old HW3 is able to perform FSD v12 so well.
The fastest processor is the NNU, so with v12 being end to end NN, it is now being given the thing it can process the best.
This is great info, and I am much more confident the older cars with HW3 are capable of autonomy 🎉
Farzad is exactly right - James Douma has an amazing talent to explain complex and imaginary scenarios into easy to understand descriptions. Truly mind blowing!!! 👍
James being excited about V12 is a big deal.
He's being excited for years now. Nothing has happened to the stock.
@@Ample17
Just tells you something about the knowledge level of the general market.
@@bobwallace9753 Or about the confirmation bias of the Tesla community.

I'm sticking with market stupidity. I've listened to enough analysts who clearly don't get deeper than last quarter's earnings. If the pros are shallow diving then it's highly likely many retail investors are just wading in puddles.
@@bobwallace9753 Well said. Not sure if I agree but I see your point.
So compelling and fun to watch James be back on air with bottled up excitement. He needs to do this once a week for his own mental health 😂😂
45 minutes in and I get why you titled this speechless. I haven’t heard Hans or Farzad say a thing 😂
Legit bait.
Yep, no questions needed, let him go.
Good. I’m here for the James. The less the others speak, the better.
What a jewel James is. A gushing stream of knowledge.
I love to hear James Douma. Thanks
James is so great at helping everyone in understanding complex issues like FSD. We are so blessed to have him.
James Douma is my favorite! Bro looks like an Elf from Lord of the Rings!
Just purchased a model Y in MA 34k after tax rebates, just amazing
That's nuts ... It's £45k to £60k ($56 to $75k) here.
Enjoy your bargain. 👌👏❤️
I purchased a model Y RWD in CT in Dec. last year I think after was said and done it came to about , $31.400 and that's b/c l couldn't qualify for the whole $7.500 fed. tax rebate, 43,990 - Fed. 6,400= 37.590- CT state rebate -2,200 =35,590 -3,900 Tesla disc. = 31,490.00 plus dest. fee + reg. fees, etc.
@@Joe44944 ... Absolute steal.
Tried it this morning and wow! Blew my mind in terms of how realistic and accurate it was. This reminds me of Netflix when they overthrew blockbuster. Hopefully they can lower the monthly subscription to a more affordability.
At least offer a per-mile option for those of us who don't drive a lot. Or do a lot of our driving where Autopilot does a pretty good job.
$99 is pretty cheap…
12.4 is already out & 12.5 has been loaded for Tesla employees so will be with you in a week or two.
So your $99 per month will be better value every 14-20 days now for the next year.
James has a remarkable knack for translating complex tech concepts into language that’s easy for all of us to understand. Truly astonishing!
Please Get James Douma back for part 2. Love the way he breaks down and make it simple to understand.
Douma never fails to deliver! It was an intense yet fun crash course once again on how AWESOME and CHALLENGING Tesla's road to full blown Robotaxi is. Always a great guest!
It is always an absolute pleasure to hear James. Thank you so much for the explanations.
Thanks everyone, it will take some time to absorb all this information. Thanks James for your valuable time.
Ride the future with this epic episode. This episode needs to go viral! Never seen James so fired up and ready to address any issue about the future.
Just got trial and it’s amazing
Just tested v12. Got it for the first time this morning. So far so good - immensely better than all versions I tried in the past, which were unusable for me. I was a nervous wreck testing the older versions. V12 drives like me 😊
Excellent interview Farzad let the expert explain without interpreting great information thanks
Once again I would like to thank James for his unparalleled insight amongst the TSLA community in regards to FSD. His knowledge as a resources is truly astounding!
Just had a weird thought - When James mentioned that eventually we can send our cars out alone to go pick up the kids at soccer practice. I can just see a line of Tesla's queueing up to pick up kids and the kids have to figure out which of the multiple driverless white Model Y's is "theirs"!
I don’t think that’s a problem - the Uber app right now - gives you the plate number of the car and probably they make it where only your ride will open the door - Waymo already those that
Many schools use large numbered tags to identify which students are being picked up. I’m sure if and when the law and schools allow for self driving vehicles to do so there will be protocols for it. But I don’t see it happening for decades. At least not until 80% of vehicles are level 4-5 self driving and 99.99% accident free for at least a decade.
The door only opens to the kid with the programmed cell phone.

That does not seem possible. Incredible if it is.
James Douma explains so good, that even I understand, why HW3 is not outdating in the near future. Amazing stuff I learned today. 👍
Wow, been trying. 12 today and it truly is as good as people have been saying. Truly revolutionary and so much more comfortable than v11.
Just got v12 and mind is blown. Drove around town today with zero interventions other than the car being a little too slow
Just took my first drive with my trial version of FSD. I was blown away! It did a couple of weird things though and I had to intervene a couple of times.
Leaving the parking lot this morning, instead of doing a simple right, left to leave the parking lot, it turned left and drove completely around the back of the building, then exited via the entrance. It had me laughing my ass off! Perfectly safe, but a weird routing. Then I had to take over when there was a bright orange crate with what looked like 4 2-liter bottles in it that presumably fell off a delivery truck, sitting in the middle of the road and my car was not going to stop or avoid it. A few miles later, it was going to blow past by exit, which was the most head scratching error of the drive. It then was going to blow past my driveway, but that wasn't a surprise as the county 911 system obviously assigned me the wrong address when I built my house so the car was headed down the street a couple of houses, which would actually be the correct place my house should have been.
One of the things I liked best is that it didn't wait until the last second and slam on the brakes when coming up on traffic like Autopilot does.
Overall very pleased and looking forward to trying it out extensively this month
Anytime James is in an interview, that's an automatic "like"!
I just wanted to watch the first few minutes, but the commentary was so good that I ended up watching the entire 2 hours. Great insights!
James Douma is to the autonomous vehicle space what Victor Davis Hanson is to political discourse. Super engaging and easy to listen to. This is my first exposure to him. Thanks for distilling it down for the rest of us. Great job, Farzad and Hans as well. Thank you!
Amazing conversation... by far the most informed and insightful discussion on FSD / Robotaxis that I have heard.. James is so knowledgeable and communicates with such great charm... exciting times ! thx James, thx guys 🙏
Best video I have seen in the 5 years I have been following Tesla. Thank you.😅

Farzad, I love your interview style. Get a knowledgeable guest and let him or her talk! So many interviewers have interrupted James Douma, clearly it's best to just let him speak! Thanks.
Fazed, tremendous interview and congratulations on letting your guest give us the big and small landscape in his time and using his experience and vocabulary. Really professional, thanks.
Definitely one of your best episodes Farzad … I am still trying to recover from this moment you shared with James … who was snorting FSD like no one has ever done. I was literally high after his outstanding performance taking very complex subjects with uncanny lucidity down to a layman’s level! Manu kudos to you all.
Incredible interview! James is so knowledgeable and he can make very hard subjects sound so simple!
Door being left open problem is easily solvable: Charging for the ride doesn't end until passenger exits, _and closes all doors_! Won't take too many $100+ charges for passengers to learn to be vigilant about their ride ending protocol.
Jizs, I would listen to this guy for days. He is so well rounded in tech and business, it's mindblowing. Like how Farzad just let him go. Privilege to listen to Jamez Douma.
This is fascinating, thank you for doing such a good job at explaining. You can tell when someone has a passion its so easy for them to tell the story and for me easy to listen too 😊
When Sir James speaks, I listen. He has done the numbers a can articulate what they mean with clarity. More people should try to understand what he is saying.

I have a model Y , I have done like 7 drives over 15 minutes and it did an amazing jobs. I did not have to turn it off. Only a couple times pressing the accelerator so it would do a right turn faster.
Thank you, James!!!
This was awesome. Thanks.
Amazing details. Fabulous!
IThanks Gentlemen,
I am currently driving with V12.3 (no second dot). Still has significant issues:
- On rare occasions runs red lights.
- Speeds in active school zones.
- Speeds (40 MPH) on entering my residential neighborhood (25 MPH).
- Occasional abrupt hesitations while making turns (esp. while turning onto/across 4+ lane roads).
- Unable to correctly navigate 6 month old navigation-unmapped traffic circle (drives in circles and/or exits at incorrect exit 180,540 vs correct 270 degrees).
- Unable to backup.
James,
- The biggest current issue with HW3 is the cameras and their locations.
- The issue with FSD is: Will FSD need a supervisor AI to address edge cases and the issues like those noted above and, if so, can that NEW AI run on HW3 or HW4 or will it require a new silicon architecture (memory, compute, Groq-like architecture, multivalued logic, etc.)?
- There is still one main use for and reason to maintain and advance Tesla's heuristics. The heuristics tree is an excellent way to classify edge case solutions and to plan and maintain training datasets (with human participation).
- Data compression is critical to real world data processing. It reduces costs, speeds up data transfer, reduces storage and temporary fetch memory requirements, reduces energy use,, and is probably an optimal method for generating synthetic real world datasets to train FSD updates on use emergent edge cases. Saving data in 4D datasets (fixed 3D world model plus egos in 4D) rather than video clips from multiple cameras provides this.
- It may be possible to pretrain FSD on regenerated/generated 4D data and bypass the entire process of rendering multiple camera feeds from compressed data only to regenerate the real-world in 4D and further reduce training cycle duration.
Thanks again for expanding the list of use cases for FSD robotaxi well beyond a mini-robotaxi.
I would still like to see a review of our insights into Tesla's training system (V2.0). FSD is nice but the real wonder is in the AI system being used to build, train, and validate FSD. That is where real-world AGI is likely to arise.
One last question: Did Groq kill the current Dojo architecture? Groq-like architecture seems to offer a potential for more efficient matrix processing and better parallel data transfer onto and off of the chips. Much of FSD consists of parallel data transfers and parallel matrix operations that flow down a long chains within FSD.
I want to up thumb multiple times.... great to listen to James on this.
I'm currently on 12.3.1 up from v11. Its a huge upgrade. I still get some disengagements. But its a heck of allot better than before. And yes I do agree that the car needs to do a better job at planning ahead as that right their would eliminate 90% of the disengagements I have to do.
Got it here in PA. It’s pretty awesome but def still has a bit of a way to go before it feels natural. Accelerates too hard in the rain, and just comes to stop signs really slowly. Needs to learn the Philly slide
Great discussion. Thank you all.
I had 11.4.9 and today got 12.3.3 which is new i didnt know it existed but. Its VERY GOOD. I have a 2020 M3 so the vision parking didn't come with the update which im slightly jealous about BUT omg its REALLY consistent and controlled now rather than a raging indecisive lunatic.

Excellent video. The best video on TH-cam in my mind !. I am learned a lot from this one !
I have 12.3.3 and I took it out this morning and it tried exiting in the right lane which was exit only and we needed to go past that exit and it was on navigation so I had to intervene. It’s still far from perfect but much better.
FSD 10 is good in Australia too. Paid for it 5 years ago. It changes lanes.
My July 2017 Model S 100D shipped with FSD 2 computer and cameras. Upgraded to FSD 3 in about 2021 with MCU 2. Cameras upgraded March 2023 and I finally started to get FSD Beta.11. On the 2024 string, waiting for FSD 12.
One of the best lessons in FSD I’ve ever seen. Amazing.
Awesome speakers and contents.
Love listening to James!
Extremely informative
Have had FSD 12.3.4 for a few days now. The leap in improvement is huge. But it still has more work to go. Probably the biggest and best improvement is in the behavior, it feels much more human like. There are quirks - it hugs to far inside on tight curves, it has missed turns that were clearly on the nav map, it becomes indecisive on lanes in cases of approaching two or more left turn lanes.
Love the new version very human like. I think tesla is closer than most believe. Exciting times. James is phenomenal. Thank you gentlemen for the video and continued content.
