Nice video! For the life of me, I could not figure out how to play this game. No one on the Internet seemed smart enough to even begin playing this game correctly either, but now I see that this game is actually really great. This video is a gift from heaven, thank you.
Great card choice for explaining the ASSgard faction ability! Seriously though, this video was great. Entertaining, comprehensive explanation of the rules, which eliminated the questions I had. Also thanks for linking the PDF files in the description. Just bought 3 booster boxes and a pack of starters for 18$. Comparing that to the big players in the CCG game is incredible value for money. Really enjoy the 80s/90s vibe of the cards too.
I got 1 card from this game in a promo pack back in '95. "Atum's Twins" (Mercenary Companion) Boris's artwork is gorgeous, and I always wanted to check out the rest of the set, but I was too into X-Men comics/cards, and Magic: The Gathering. Then, I could never find this game sold anywhere. I found the card in a stack of random I just found in my closet the other day, so figured I'd look it up. Turns out, the game was really only around for like 2 years. No wonder I never saw or heard of it again. But, turns out there are still unopened boxes of the cards floating around out there, and because no one has really ever heard of the game, looks like I might be able to get'um pretty cheap.
So glad you guys made this video :) I came across a shelf of old dead CCGs at a game store and saw this. Debated about it for a while and then found a set of 3 booster boxes and a bunch of starter decks on ebay for 20$ altogether lol So I decided to just have all of the Hyborian Gate and this will be a great resource for playing aand teaching the game!
Good work. I picked up this game when I was 10 and my mom took it away. I just found it on ebay and want to figure out how to play. Kinda sad it failed, looks potentially alot of fun.
Good video, however there are two points of correction after thoroughly reading the rulebook, which though it may have been unclear on some poimts, was very clear on this: a) it did indicate that a gate's power could only be used once in a turn, however troopers (plural) was indicated in what could be transported per turn from a gate. Thus, you CAN transport more than one trooper in a turn from a single gate, as long as you're not using the SAME 2 Asgard pyramids - for example - at a complex in a single turn to send 2 troopers worth 4 each to Asgard. b) ANY card OR rule that refers to a Strength bonus adds to BOTH Strength numbers. Thus the bonus for Osirin Tech on Osirins add to Attack AND Defense, and cards such as "Weapons of Yanny," which add 8 strength on a Gate attack adds 8 to both Attack AND Defense. However, "Strength Bonus" only adds to Attack OR Defense because it specifies a bonus to one or the other...not Strength. c) Attackers Vortex Tactics cards are played face down, followed by the defenders, which are played face up. The attackers Vortex Tactics cards are then turned face up and all are resolved, beginning with the defenders tactic cards. But good job on the video and I'm a fan of the game as well! Despite the fact that though the card art is original, it has been proven to have been recycled from other publications from the artists. But I think the game is a blast and the art is stunning. So from all those Hyborian Gates fans out there, thank you for the video.
By any chance could you explain the difference between something Dimension Walking and Transporting? Logically I'm lead to believe that Dimension Walking doesn't require Power to move the troop, but would like that clarified before I decided to build a Chaos+ deck
@@HattytheAwesome Dimension Walking is something a Chaos creature can do once per turn (as long as they haven't moved previously in the same turn), period. Since you're not using a gate for transport, transportation cost is ignored. However, any Chaos monster dimension walking will lose all attachments when doing so - unless the attachment and/or trooper states otherwise. Transporting is moving a trooper and all its attachments in one of three ways: from Ready Area to dimension, from Dimension back to Ready Area, or to an opponent's gate. Any of these moves will require use of a pyramid complex with available transport power. However, there are some cards that say you can transport without the use of a gate. Since it still involves transporting, it's still going from ready area to gate, etc. It just won't require transport power since you're not using a pyramid complex to do it in those situations. Hope that clears things up. :)
@@pietrorasputin52 Very much so, was looking at the Chaos monsters specifically, and more closely Mountain Monster that can Move to the Asgard Dimension without a Gate. Can Mountain Monster move with attachments through this ability?
@@HattytheAwesome Mountain Monster's ability allows you to move to a dimension without the use of a gate. In other words, if the monster is in you're ready area, you can send it directly to Asgard without using a gate, thus ignoring transport cost. Again, it's game text is referring to transportation or moving without a gate, not dimension walking. It can still dimension walk on a turn instead since it's Chaos. It would then follow any standard rules observed for dimension walking. Sorry for the delay in response and hope it helps
I've had theses cards in my collection since 1995. I bought a whole box for the art work. I've sorted the cards from there original starter boxes. How would I make a deck. Thank you for the video tutorials.
Also, just a general point of correction in regards to game terminology, which I referenced in a way with my earlier comment: Strength in this game is a general term that refers to BOTH the top AND bottom numbers on a characters power level. In other words, Strength in this game is another way of saying stats or attributes. And in fact the glossary points that out and states that the two parts to a trooper's strength is attack (the top number) and defense (the bottom number). Just needed to make the quick correction.
Since you seem familiar with the game, I'm looking to build some decks with a bunch of cards I got recently. When building decks do you focus on one of the types, IE: only use osiran troopers and companions? Or do you go with two-three different ones? Or all of them? What tends to work best?
Great HOW to Play video. After reading about how bad this game is, this video makes sense of it and doesn't seem to be all that bad, not a fan of the triangles so probably would just proxy something a littler more sturdy maybe different color dice etc..
These cards were nothing more than another set of Fantasy Art cards with paintings by Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. These artists were hot in the Trading Card world at that time...as was Magic/Fantasy Card Gaming, so trying to cash in on the gaming craze too was a no brainer. Unfortunately Trading Card makers (not fantasy gamers) created this complex game.

This gives me “fun cousin teaching you his favourite game energy”
Lmao, totally agreed. They really seem to be having fun doing this, which is quite wholesome. Well put! :D
