Good overview! I just got a Mk5 CF-31 and I love it! I will be using it as my main PC. I use and carry vintage laptops all the time, so the bulkiness isn't an issue for me, I actually really like it. I also really love having a built-in serial port and PCMCIA slot. With the serial I can plug my Palm PDA cradles straight into the machine with no adapters. And I use a PCMCIA to CF adapter to transfer files to vintage laptops, which will slot directly into this laptop.
Excellent review. Just to mention that upgrading from an HDD to an SSD will not only help with performance but also with battery lifespan/uptime because the lack of an electric motor that is always spinning, and also avoiding possible mechanical failure/data loss, as the HDD will eventually break. I have purchased a second hand MK5 unit with 16GB of RAM, SSD, built in GPS and 4G/LTE modem. It shows ~3000 hours operation in BIOS. It comes with a LIND car charger (made in USA). I love it and now I can take my old Toyota 4x4 from 1986 and go trough hell if needed 🤘 Ah, this configuration whas originally sold for 5960$ 😅
Terrific review. Best one I have seen. Just purchased one to replace my 12 year old toshiba, that I have been slowly coaxing along for far too many years. I have plenty of desktops in my office and home. I just needed something tough, that would work as a pass through for watching movies from one of my externals, and using for all of my diagnostic software for my cars and motorcycles. Dont really care about the weight, though, might look into the second battery, for when I am traveling. Dont really need an optical drive, since I havent used the one on my toshiba in at least 7 or 8 years. Hardly even use them on the home and office computers.
Man, I remember these laptops. We had a fleet of about 600 or so. Yes, they are heavy but they have had a lot of mileage during my time with them and they went all over the world and then some....
I went with the sell 5414 over this. I don't think the water rating is as good as the cf31 or the Dell 74xx series but for $500 it's practically brand new, 3 battery's (one hot swap) 4g lte, 1tb ssd, I'm not upset
Wish the cf31 and cf19 screen could be upgraded to an ips display or even a 1080p screen (or whatever HD would be in that aspect ratio) I know it doesn't make much sense for a rugged machine like this, but still. The Panasonic cf40 does have a 1080p screen and is fully rugged but they're way too expensive still, being released not too long ago.
I recently bought a CF-31. It has a DVD player and I'm interested more in a 2nd battery. Does this require more than just buying the 2nd battery for that compartment ? Thanks Ed
Can you guys post a VIDEO how to replace the BIOS CHIP ... I have 2 toughbook's CF-31's MK3 and MK4 with Password Lock Supervisor BIOS Lock. Thanks I just updaed the drivers using a new driver update by CCLEANER and it changed my password after reboot. Thanks would be great if you guys can find away and post something how to replace the BIOS or Reset the BIOS Thanks
Hi what you think it’s the best to buy I like the tughbook but I don know what’s is the best choice I pipe fitter and I have to use a lot in the field to download 3D model I like you Chanel I hope you can help me thanks
The CF-19 is a smaller, more portable laptop, however it's keyboard is a bit more difficult to use. The CF-31 is the largest and most rugged model, but it weighs over 10lbs and is very bulky to carry around. If you are doing field work and potability is a priority, I would probably choose the cf-19. I would suggest a mk5 or higher for modern operating system support.

Thank you very much.. This was awesome to watch and learn about this laptop.
Very nice video. I'm still learning about it.
Awesome thorough review!
Great video Sir, I'm going to buy one. Thank you!
This was a really good review, thankyou. Can you install a blue ray player in the optical port if you wanted to?
13:40 Yeah you don't have to re-install/Reload Windows all over again you can just clone the drive.
Yeah I was confused there.

Those also look like quite nice machines. Not quite as rugged, but a little more practical for daily use.
Thank you for this review!
About cooling: how about thin coper platine with "liquid metal" thermopaste?

Can you link the expansion slot battery you purchased? Thanks.
Believe it or not I’m actually thinking about buying one myself when I have the money because this thing is way too damn bad ass
I recommend them, if you can get a good deal. I’ve owned 4 toughbooks in my life. I’m buying a new one before college.

This would be great for field amateur radio operations.
I would think a scanner dongle would work with a toughbook?
Not a issue to change , just clone the old hard drive to the new ssd card , simple
Thank you for this!
Is there a dark mode setting?
Whats best resolution on the old rugged tough books. Also which is better out of this cf31 or cf19.

CF-19 or a Toughpad G1.
Load Minitools 10. Then copy disk to the SSD using a USB 3.0 to SATA 2.5 Adapter case.
What screen resolution? Is it 1080p?
it is a low 1024x768. Not fantastic.

These CF-31s are all SATA, right? I was disappointed when I got a CF-18
Yes. All cf-31 models are SATA. CF-19s are as well.
Anybody tried to install FreeBSD on this thing?

hello, how to write "@" the at sign on this keyboard in English please?
It should be above the number 2 key if you have an English layout keyboard installed.
