    These were great industrial laptops. We used them in cranes for the size...I'm thinking one model was the 25 the other a 17. I remember replacing the hard drives a few times over the years and they were encased in a clear rubbery shock protector. They took a beating and some high temps but always worked.

    As some already said, that tuner card could work under windows 10, but win7 might be better choice overall... You might get lucky with Linux as well, there are drivers for all kinds of tuners - I even managed to run USB one on raspberry pi. Alternatively there are also USB tuners for pal analog as well. Currently I own digital only USB tuner for DVB-T/T2/C. SmartDVB is my software of choice. I also do have winfast analog/dvbt TV card and it works nice with its software (on win7), sadly i can't tune analog signals anymore.

    • @adriansdigitalbasement
      @adriansdigitalbasement  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Others have said that -- but it's clearly not the case. When I took it off the computer it would only attach to the washer one way -- the opposite of how I had attached it.

      @SpearM3064 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only limit is how much RAM your computer can hold, but Windows 98 can't access RAM above 4 GB. (You can still use memory above 4 GB as a RAM drive, however.)
      Also, if you have more than 512 MB, and try to open an MS-DOS prompt, it'll tell you that you don't have enough memory to run the process. You can fix this by changing the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that VCache uses to 512 megabytes or less.

    • @adriansdigitalbasement
      @adriansdigitalbasement  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had issues installing it with too much RAM it would blue screen -- but I think taking the RAM out would let it install then you could reinstall it. Forgot what the amount was but it was 2gb or something higher than most Win 98 machines.

      It is pity that no one from the famous yutubers do not want to promote MagiDuck, a very nice DOS modern platformer in Text mode targeting 8088 CGA 256KB ram PC XT

      I need to check out that game -- I also saw a text mode Mega Man. Very cool. The nice thing about planet X3 is it works on everything in all video modes and supports pretty much all sound card types.

      It's a very fun and convenient benchmark now! "Does it run X3?" can sit nicely alongside "Does it run DOOM?" ^^
      ...and, admittedly, there's extra personal fun here since it's cool hearing the music I did for it snuck into a bunch of bigger YT channels :p

    disassembly looks the same as any 2000-2010 laptop, I hate it, the stress. touchpad and keyboard ribbon cables, screen hinges, power button so annoying.

    The fake "KOPTAN" is alright. I mean, I wouldn't use it if I were NASA and the success of a space mission depended on it, but for most stuff, the material as well as the adhesive is similar enough. The original DuPont/3M Kapton tape is way to expensive. A roll like the fake one you have shown would actually cost $160 from 3M ("5413 AMBER 2 IN X 36 YD") at DigiKey.

    Great video! I'm a Toughbook and Itronix GoBook hoarder! Hehe. Loaded Puppy Linux on one Toughbook. Works pretty good. Touchscreen doesn't work... The GoBooks make great music servers, very strong sound for a laptop.

    To be honest you were probably better off than looking at the explosion diagram in the simplified service manual (CPD0204031A2) - that's a headache to look at!

    Hopefully Panasonic/Matshushita used their own electrolytic capacitors in this thing, which unlike the Chicom crap brand ones, last decades, and don't swell up and leak everywhere.

    adrian with the hinges, squeeze the center bit with pliers and it will be less floppy and the bar will be more captive, you also need a ratcheting right angle screwdriver(c) any chinese seller on ebay

      just force windows 7 or 10 to take the drivers "have disk" "browse for drivers" select inf etc, just make sure if you have a x64 copy of windows, you get a x64 driver, if only 32 bit is available....there is workarounds...but...good luck... or google for alternative drivers for your windows version of preference
      also, i have a cheap usb tuner that literally can take ANY signal, it was a cheap first gen atsc tuner, 1 of the early 1s when they were still giving $40 coupons out(i still got 2 coupons left!!!) to get converter boxes and it does all of the data/decoding in software, you can get cheap usb tv tuners or dedicated "sdr" usb software defined radio devices, if you ever are at a loss for drivers, look in the device manager in windows>right click on whatever device, click properties and go to "Hardware Ids" in details, it will list devices like USB\VID_147E&PID_2016&REV_0002(this is the fingerprint reader in my laptop), if you google the vid and pid it will get you to the actual hardware drivers or product name, really useful for those creative webcams that printed the model on a little tag on the cord

    I worked at a hospital and watched a paramedic drop a toughbook out of the back of the ambulance onto the concrete and then chuck it back inside without a second hesitation. When I made a comment about this, they told me that when they return to their home station that they store it in a bucket of salt water for kicks and giggles. Those things are bulletproof.
