Panasonic Toughbook 55 Review

  • Lisa Gade reviews the Panasonic Toughbook 55, a 14” rugged laptop with integrated handle and many modular bays for customization. Need a dedicated AMD GPU, different ports, a fingerprint scanner or optical drive? Swap them in! The FZ-55 is Panasonic’s semi-rugged laptop with Ultrabook class CPUs and up to a 1000 nit full HD touch screen with pen. Yes, there’s an even more rugged Toughbook 31 that’s designed to survive being dragged across the desert floors behind and ATV, but the 55 strikes a balance between durability and portability. 4 LTE is optional, it has 2 RAM slots, up to 2 M.2 SSDs and a backlit keyboard.

    This is the ideal bridge between a notebook & a desktop...the best of both worlds. Too bad the design is relegated to businesses as opposed to mass consumers.
    Being able to fully & easily customize your laptop out of the box should be the priority standard across the industry. Too many of us consumers prefer cheap, thin, and sealed tech...until its time for repairs.

    What I would really like, sometime, is a video about your favorites/recommendations.
    A video about your favorite phones of 2020, top gaming laptop, best workstation laptops, budget gaming laptops, most unique products you love, etc.
    I'm always curious about what you're using and what you enjoy enough to keep using yourself.

    I remember when the apple PowerBook had bays so you could have 2 batteries or 1 battery and a 2nd hard drive or a c.f. DVD drive or keep it empty for lighter weight.

      Yes I had modular years ago when on the go. Work at home now so not necessary. But I highly recommend even just for extending battery life or the occasional DVD use, for any general use, does not require being on construction site to use.... Love these!

    Lisa, great vid as usual. Just one correction, the backlit keyboard is RGB so green is not the only option. You can change it to any color you like. Open Panasonic PC Settings Utility in the start menu. Mine is currently white. ;) Thanks to being deployed to work from home, my company said "buy a laptop on us" and I got this one. It's a great machine. Not my first Toughbook. They are awesome deals when you buy used ex-police units on ebay. I also have a CF-30 which is showing it's age but it's a TANK and won't die. I chose the semi rugged version this time as I don't work in a crazy environment. I'm not buying into the ultra thin non-serviceable machines. They have bitten me before, never again.

      They didn’t glue the batteries they are screwed in behind the case so therefore they did not glue them like apple did. The only thing is you have to remove the bottom cover in order to be able to swap out the battery but you can easily do that by unscrewing all the screws on the panel and around the battery and then it’s out no adhesive

    I have an old Toughbook, and I mean OLD like, it has a T2300 Core Duo. And that thing was nearly indestructible. As of now the keyboard finally gave up. It's not particularly useful now in general. But it's still functioning. I would love to get my hand on another one. If I could afford one a Toughbook would be on top of the list for my daily driver. Right now I'm looking for a laptop that can play games. That is affordable and has a display that I can actually look at without hurting my eyes. Seriously what's with all the horrible IPS panels I keep coming across. Worst than regular TN panels.

    • @Verpal
      @Verpal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, not using AMD Pro processor cut down on battery life and performance massively, but considering that Panasonic would have to redesign the motherboard for it, perhaps in next generation? I mean, Renoir certainly proofed itself, unlike the lackluster Picasso.
