Great video! I am a student pilot and just learning these points about detonation and spark plug fouling and the way you put the two videos together was an exceptionally good technique of making the point! Thanks a lot.

good video, my c-150 did the same thing today except it started 5 miles away from the airport at 3,000 ft. turned around and landed, did a lean run up at full rpm ran perfect the rest of the day! thanks for a good video!

Learned to fly in 1978 and never seemed to have any issues then, perhaps because the trainers were newer birds. Now with a club, I notice most of the time on start up, the engines will run smoother if I lean them slightly. The club owns old birds. I do believe it is important to lean the engine regardless of whether you are idling; Taking off with full power or cruising. Not much mind you for the taxi and takeoff. Better to raise head temperature a little than choke up while rolling on take off. Plus, the difference is easily noticed on mag testing. Oh sure, I know the engines are overhauled and all that, but the engine is still old stock and maybe carb/throttle mechanisms/settings are worn in somewhat and this causes a slight difference in fuel feed!? No heat please, I am not a mechanic and not in a position to say anything with certainty, but this is how it works for me. The club has had several instances of fouled plugs and maybe someone is not leaning the engine in cruise as well. Thanks for the video.

I get leaning during taxing, but lean during takeoff? surely you want that rich mixture for cylinder cooling, providing your density alt isn't crazy high. Then again I guess it's whatever the POH recommends is what we should be attempting to do

I usually repeat the magnetos check once lined up on the runway. It takes me not more than 20 seconds and I'm ready to go... Safe flying!

Had this happen 2 days ago while doing closed traffic. On the 4th I applied power and got severe shuttering with very little take off power. Aborted takeoff and taxied to a run up area. Verified fouled plug but called it a day.

I did not know about that, air traffic in Ukraine is not so busy to wait for 15 minutes. Thanks a lot. By the way, for how much did you lean?

Thanks for sharing. Good call. My old model A car used to do the same thing.

+shamansvision Thank you. You're welcome! As far as the carburetor goes not a lot has changed over the years I guess

There is nothing wrong with leaning during taxi. BUT you MUST lean aggressivly. This will prevent you from taking off if case you forget to de-lean. Lean the way that the engine will give taxi-power but not much more. If you then forget to de-lean and try to take-off the engine will remember you with stalling.

On the second takeoff did you leave the mixture lean or go back to full rich? thanks

      guintube full rich

Always full rich, if you are below 3500-4000ft density altitude.

Smart man to abort. I like that! Take offs are optional but landings are mandatory!

How did you get the overlay showing your height, speed etc ?

    • @FlipDeVlieger

+Hamdhan777 This was filmed with a Garmin Virb camera which also records GPS data. You can later add all kinds of overlays with the complimentary software
