  • m0a.com We've launched something very cool a new weekly video series geared towards pilots called Maintenance Mondays!
Each Monday we'll be talking preventative maintenance, prebuy inspections, and little things we as pilots should all understand a bit better when it comes to our systems.
You can watch the first video below as we discuss our ignition systems and share a bit about our spark plugs and their care.

Great video. I think having a maintenance video series is an excellent idea. Pilots NEED to know this stuff... not just take it for granted. Every time I poke my head in the maintenance hanger I learn a lot and I really appreciate the maintenance team at my airport for their time and patience. I’m looking forward to more videos!

This is great! A maintenance series is exactly what we need as pilots.

Too bad you can't show what happens when a plug fails on takeoff. First solo at a Class D airport. Runup was good. Got a couple hundred feet in the air and the engine started acting up. Started tickling the stall horn. Thought I might have to put it down in the river next to the airfield. Those famous words were echoing in my head... Fly the plane! Fly the plane! Fly the plane! Managed to nurse it around and put it back down on the runway.
CFI thought I was just being a baby until he came out to start the plane up. Then we figured out one of the plugs had crapped out. An eye opening experience for sure!

Most informative video I’ve watched in years. I wrench on my own cars bikes and planes and I want that machine. It takes hours to clean the plugs in my Skylane. Keep them coming thanks

Appreciate the comparison on the spark plugs, between the lead build up versus a new spark plug. Very helpful/good to know.

Thank you so much for doing this. Have already spent a fair amount of money for shop to clean my plugs. Will certainly try myself next time!

One important note that wasn’t checked. There is a resistance measurement that should be done between the ignition wire contact at the top of the plug and the electrode (center pin coming out of ceramic. This is very important in that the inline resistor inside the ceramic can get outside of specifications of the manufacturer. I recently tested 8 plugs from a four cylinder Lycoming and three were outside specification and no longer serviceable according to the manufacturer. Those three plugs cleaned up nice, looked almost new, and showed a good spark on my champion tester. The problem is that they would not fire consistent with other plugs when installed as the resistance was many thousands of ohms more than the other serviceable plugs. This creates a less than adequate intensity spark on those higher resistance plugs and can result in poor engine performance and strain on your magneto. Also you should periodically test your ignition leads for resistance from flexing and heat and check insulation or signs of shorting in stainless braided covering. This also comes under preventative maintenance procedures and can save you a lot in diagnostic time by an A&P.

Great video! I've had a few run ups with bad mags in the past so this is super informative for me. I would have liked to see more and longer close up shots of the plugs though. Even a longer shot of the blue sparks would have been nice. Thanks for putting this content out there!

Damn good video, this is excellent and right to the point. Looking good, you’re looking like success. I just turn 62, and I pass my ground school test, but let it expire due too money issues. But thing are starting to look better. So my question is, I am I too old to try again and get at least 10 years of flight. I am in good shape and I am motivated mentally. I need a SHORT TIME and a no bullshit course. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND. I like your boot camp training course it help me to pass the first time.

Excellent video Jason, a must see for Cessna 152 owners like me. 20 hour Tach plug cleaning, lower plug fowling , lycoming dislike of rich running. Interesting description of the IO235 being a cold running engine

Thanks for the feedback Ross! Have you tried the extended core nose plugs (Part Number REM37BY) for your aircraft? We worked with Lycoming / Cessna to develop these plugs for the O-235 to help with the lead fouling in that engine.

Champion Aerospace I am using them per A&P advice. Stop using the Fine wire which suffers from early failure

Good Vid!! keep up the good work M0A! How about something on tires and brakes? How to tell if tires are inflated correctly, how brakes and shoes should look and what servicing can be done by the pilot. Does a flat spot on a tire mean it has to be replaced? If you have anti-lock brakes, can it mean shorter tire life?

Hi Jon, glad you enjoyed the video. We expect the transition to unleaded fuel and FADEC controlled engines to reduce, but not eliminate, the need to clean spark plugs. But for the current population of mixture-controlled piston engines that run on leaded fuel, the need will sustain.

What do you mean “running cold”?

    • @BeersNBullshit
      @BeersNBullshit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Jose Guevara running rich ... when you are rich, the excess fuel cools the engine. When you are lean, the engine runs hot.
