  • This is the first video that briefly shows our diary from deciding to sell our house, to buying a yacht. Thanks to many Instagram stories, I have a collection of what we went through. Obviously, there are many more chapters to this journey, but here is a summary (7 months, compiled in 12 minutes).
This is only the beginning of what we know will be a wonderful, enriching new chapter.
We enjoy wildly chasing adventure travel and enjoy the outdoors through climbing, hiking, surfing and now, sailing. Sometimes I write, paint or take a pic. Thanks for joining.
Stay curious and enjoy the wonderful space we call life :)
We are planning to live and explore the Indian Ocean from our sailboat. We did a refit of a TOSCA 36 and left Cape Town in October 2018. A large part of sailing is learning how to be adaptable and change plans - our biggest being our failed engine as we were making our way from Knysna to Port Elizabeth. Follow along as we figure out how to live with less.

Such an inspiration! You did it! Reality will follow you everywhere. Don't let it get you down. Talk about naming a dream and chasing it! Well Done

Thank you Alia. Part of letting go is also giving time to reflect. We actually enjoying the process and feel so privileged to have had the opportunity. Every chapter of our lives should be cherished and loved. Thanks for the support. Nichelle

Great to see South Africans doing this as well. Working on my dream as well. Doing my first sailing course in November so I will most probably see you on the water in the future. Sterkte

Thanks Maritz. It is pretty achievable if you go second hand and are willing to live without the "comforts" of landlife. We will keep all posted - the second video is way overdue. Seen jou op die water!

What were your purchase and refit costs like?
And what are marina fees like in SA?
We are selling our house in JHB, but we don't live in SA anymore.

hi Charles, we did a video on our costs. Have a look at EP 26 (PS marina fees vary, depending on size of the boat and if you are a member or not. Budget around R4000pm for a 36ft mono) Hope that helps.

Congrats on your boat purchase. We are fellow capetonians who would like to do what you are doing now, Chuck it all in and go sailing. We live in Kirstenhof. What type of boat did you buy and how much if I may ask?. Who was the broker. 😀⛵

Hey Gary, thanks for reaching out. We searched high and low but decided on a Tosca 36 - mono. It is SA designed (it helps to know your boat can withstand our coastal waters), which we prefer over more commercial charter designs (although they are more sleek and roomy). We used Bruce from Boat Brokers. He is in your hood. Happy to discuss more detail if you are ever in the neighborhood. Happy Planning. We will be sharing more on the how and what in future videos :)
