    The 40v stuff is too expensive for the marginal increase in power. $1000 for a drill/driver combo kit is absurd.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The low voltage cutoff is going to be around 25-30 volts, so an 18(20v) will never run the tool. A 40v would likely work on an 18v but it would fry the tool in 5 seconds

      Was going to say the same thing, it will be the battery cut off protector not allowing it to work. Maybe one of those 2x 18v adapter to 36 would do the trick, need the Chinese to make one as imagine the makita ones would not fit the 40v tool?

    I'm more curious if you can run an 18v tool off of the 40v battery with the adapter. If I had a mix of 18/40v and 18v batteries wear out, can I use the 40v going forward?
    (I already have a hypothesis but would like to see)

  • @Fekillix
    @Fekillix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You could definitively fit a beefy DC/DC converter inside that huge adapter. But only for drills/low power tools, like max 20A.

    • @dreamcat4
      @dreamcat4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah you can replace the buck controller (voltage step down) inside the adaptor with an independently sourced 3rd party boost converter. And connect the inputs - output terminals the other way around. However for a high current application the converter will generate a lot of heat, and require a large heatsink. Plus all the other components will probably make the size and shape just too big to fit inside of the adaptor. Perhaps a more simple solution is to instead take an old or broken 18v x2 tool. And then saw off it's pair of battery cages. Then build a new custom adapter from the remains. To take two 18v batteries instead.

      You could always get the 40v 2.5ah battery. It is roughly the same size and weight as an 18v 5ah LXT battery with the same capacity. The 40v 2.5 still get better run time than the 18v 5.0 as the tools are more efficient

    Too funny. As always I admire your enthusiasm but there was no way an 18V batt was going to work. The 40V tool is looking for at least 30 something volts to run or it trips the low voltage cutt-off. Now if you rigged up two 18V batt's in series (36V nominal) and then plugged 'em in to the 40V tool --I suspect that would work. A bit cumbersome to use but would prolly work. Lol Loved the pig story all the same. Cheers!

  • @frankv84
    @frankv84 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Apart from the specific electronics in the charger adapter causing this to fail and possibly the voltage being too low, wasn’t one of the main features of the XGT platform that the tool and battery have two way communication? I wouldn’t be surprised if the tool anyway won’t function unless it is able to communicate. I guess you could test that by hooking up some 40V power supply to an XGT tool and see if it runs.

    The 40V charger cannot handle 18V battery charging. The adapter is actually a 18V battery charger which take 40V as power source only. The 18V charging circuit is embedded in the adapter. So the current path is :40V charger --> adapter --> 18V battery. The 18V battery cannot provide current in the reverse way through the adapter to the tool.
