I've heard that Dr. Felix himself opposed publication of these 12 jewels of string writing as they were viewed, by himself, as "mere excersizes" in composition for his teacher, Carl Zelter.
If this music is just one of Mendelssohns "exersizes" I am glad to have the opportunity of listening. I think this exersize brings a lot more.
J’ai l’impression d’écouter une œuvre pour quatuor à cordes qui a avalé des stéroïdes.
Ceci n’est surtout pas une écriture symphonique. C’est encore de la musique de chambre.
L’interprétation, excellente. Ils ont fait ce qu’ils ont pu avec une œuvre mineure.

Agreed. When when my orchestra played this, we kind of treated the end like it was the finale to a death metal tune, and melted all of the faces. Opportunity missed, Amsterdam!
Keep your eyes on the 3rd (maybe 4th?) viola. Her eyeballs have a mind of their own.
