Hi Ryan and Melodi. Watched your show tonight here from Perth in Western Australia. I had a thought, re crossing the lake to Bird Island at night...until you build your light house, I was wondering if you could lay a path of bouys to avoid the sandbar and the reflector off them could be used as a guide to get you over there? Especially on a foggy black night. Would give you extra peace of mind. Don't know how expensive they are, but if inexpensive, you could get about 8 to 10 to create the lane. Just I thought I had.😊 😊
We so appreciate your suggestion and can't thank you enough for your concern. In the fog, (and there is a LOT of fog on that lake in the fall) we would not be able to see the buoys unfortunately. We will probably go with a hand-held GPS device of some kind to setup a route that we can follow in the dark. Thank you for watching! -Ryan
As a Canadian living in Las Vegas I truly miss paulines cheesies. I was very envious... so badly wanted to reach thru the screen and help myself! I also miss big turk chocolate bars.!!!!! I enjoyed this episode.... Fall in Canada
I don't think we have heard of Pauline's cheezies we are 'Hawkins Cheezies' people 🌟 Thank you so much for your comments and thank you for your support of our channel. I do remember the Big Turk chocolate bars (Turkish delight covered with chocolate?). Ohhh yes... Fall in Canada! 🍁
I was going to suggest this when you start building your dock but now seems appropriate. You can get remote activated dock lights that you actuate with a key fob. I'm not sure how close you need to be but something like that would help greatly. Also, Canadian Tire sell hats ball cap style that have lights built into the brim. You find them in the fishing section. I have two of them and they are great around the campfire or for tying a boat up in the dark. This way you have your own hands free light that someone else isn't pointing somewhere when you need to see what you are doing. I sure wish I'd had them back when I worked on the cattle ranch. We often returned from town in the dark and my wife holding the flashlight 🔦 was usually a source of heated conversation 😂😂
Lol, I can only imagine! I like the idea of a lit hat. I have a headband light, I should really have a kit that I keep locked up on the boat that includes lights, a gps, and so forth. We were going to wait until we get a large boat, but after that experience, we should probably get one sooner than that. Thank you again for your comments! -Ryan
2 ideas for your solar array stand, water collection for garden, firewood storage under stand on pallets , to dry for a season for most efficiant fires. or to stack milled wood under to be kept sheltered so it dosent warp with 1x1 strips between layers
We do plan on making a larger wood shed to dry wood, but I like the idea of water collection. That is something we could do that would be a benefit for sure. Thank you for the suggestion. -Ryan
I love my marshmallows black!!! I will pull the burnt part off eat it stick the middle part of the marshmallow back in the fire until it gets black and then eat that 🥰
To be honest, I wasn't a smores fan at all - until the first season of our channel when my sister/brother-in-law/niece were there and Samantha pulled out the gluten-free 'crackers' - I'm not a fan of the graham wafers in that composition so I didn't really go for them. Well these crackers were a game changer. Now we just LOVE them! The fall colours are absolutely breath-taking and I can't just can't be quiet about them - I'm in a constant daze walking around the island... 🍂
Ps: Ryan, where is your protective helmet and rope while you're up on a ladder or roof top. You're scaring the heck out of me, I can only imagine how Melodi feels. Anyway, hope you both keep safe and well. Just love your show!!!❤
You're right of course, I do need to do a better job of staying safe... Since my fall, I have been far more diligent. As I have learned, ANYTHING can happen and it really is reckless to be off the ground without some sort of fall-arrest gear. Your life can change (or end) in a split second... Thank you for your concern! -Ryan
Thank you Melodi & Ryan & Opal. Such serene & beautiful landscapes & wildlife. (Was Melodi trying to pronounce "photosynthesis?" It's just as complicated to spell)! I'm glad you were able to curl up in your cozy home after a very challenging day! Stay safe & well. You're a GOOD girl, Opal!💓🏝🐕👫
Yes, Opal is a little dolly for sure. It is so easy to get our 'tangs toungled' isn't it? Thank you for the kind words, and THANK YOU for watching! -Ryan
Ryan, may I suggest that you get a GPS, a handheld will work. With even a handheld GPS you can "LOG" a route (to & from the island to your ports) in the unit that you can follow this " logged route" (can be curved, does not need to be a straight line) to help guide your direction. Another suggestion would be to apply "high viz " reflective stickers (silver) to the back of the barge. A flashlight like you used would show the reflective stripes easily and at distance.
Another great idea. We have decided to get one for such an occurrence. Love the idea about the reflective tape too! Thanks so much for your commentary. We always look forward to what you are going to say next! -Ryan
Thank you so much!! It gives us comfort to see it high up off the ground - probably a bit of a better idea than right on the shore, but you do what you have to, in order to make things work for the time being. We so much appreciate your support! 💚
Awww... you are really something - it's so great to have you on-board this fabulous journey to off-grid homestead living. We truly appreciate your input and comments. Thank you for watching! 💚
I do think that was a beaver because of the shape of its back legs and tail going back and forth 🙂Gosh that fog and no moonlight would have been brutal, yikes.
Hello!! Welcome to our channel! We are so glad you've stopped in to comment. I tell you...we sure feel like 'true adventurers'... maybe not always the smartest ones, but we do our best to make it through the tougher moments in this journey 😆 🤣 Thank you for watching!
Whoa... that would have been heartbreaking. At least you survived! You'll see in an upcoming episode how close I came to actually getting lost at sea - so to speak. -Ryan
Wear your fall arrest harness please.. put a few permanent anchors on the very top of your roof. Silicone very well and it's there if you need! Plus 1 anchor per side would be great!! I am sure melodie feels your life is worth more than a few HEAVY DUTY anchors.
Sadly had to put away my solo stove for the year. We’ve had a very dry summer and we had a wildfire in the forest. I’m nat going to take the chance for a yard fire
@donniearnini9928 ohhh I'm sorry... I totally concur... there is no way we would ever take a chance on having a fire last summer. This was done in October... beside the lake, far away from any brush or trees. 🔥
🍫🍪🔥 Melodi: Well, just take it in bites! Ryan: There's no real dignified way to eat these! Melodi: Oh no! Melodi: Oh dear! Ryan: Hahaha! Melodi: Oh no! Ryan: Hahaha! Melodi: Oh no! Ryan: Aw honey, that's...! Melodi: Shoot! Melodi: Oh, no! Ryan: Oh, honey! Melodi: Oh, my goodness, whoa! Ryan: Oh, honey! Melodi: Uh-huh! Opal: I guess this is something humans still have to master. (We're currently working on the "Doorknob Principle").🧠🚪💓🐕
Since you decided to go so late at night I see you must get some lights on your boat then it won't be a struggle what at least I know your husband is not like the other ones I look
@davidasimkosr4641 exactly!! We've been kinda slow on the fish uptake this year... a very unexpected season in so many ways. We still feel grateful and blessed but you might understand a little more in our next episode... 💚
I can eat the marshmallow but the chocolate, I'd rather go fishing or moose hunting !! Chocolate is made for candy bars , not smores !! Uck ....... Good old Hershey bar ......
Ohh but that's what smores are - - the cracker/marshmallow/chocolate combo all heated and melted together! I can appreciate your sentiment - I never liked them until I changed out the actual cracker - - now... they are just sooo tasty! Thank you for coming in David! Have a great weekend! 🍁
Hey there! Welcome to our channel 😀 We respect your opinion. To be sure, we aren't your 'typical' homesteaders but we just tell our story 'our way'. We sure have met such wonderful people by sharing our story. Oh boy... we are definitely 'off-grid' in the biggest way possible and we call an island in the wilderness kinda remote. This just may not be your kind of story...but that's okay. I bet you're a good guy. We wish you well. 😃
Can't get enough. The 3 of you are just like a Disney movie. Great moral content, thaks for being who you 2 are.
@edwardpoll4259 that is so very kind of you to say. It's a joy to share this journey with you... we really appreciate your comments 💚

A helmet isn’t going to stop your neck from breaking if you fall, boomer.
Bubble wrap might soften the blow though 😉
Love you two! Really enjoy drinking my coffee and enjoying your adventures
Welcome to our channel! We love hearing from our subscribers. We have so much more to come - stay tuned! Thank you for watching 💚

Under the solar stand idea with all that beautiful sun, would make an excellent greenhouse.
Yes, you know it just might make a nice little spot for a grow table. We will look into that... thanks for the idea! -Ryan
