      Agreed. The barn would be a perfect place to season wood since it's already built for airflow for drying grass.

    I am Swedish 🇸🇪 and find these videos so positive. People like you and your partner should be given a medal for all the work you put in and your willingness to adapt to the local community and culture - getting that hunting license is so important. Many people think living in the country is about independence and not having to rely on others when it is in fact the opposite, both for practical and social reasons you will be more dependent on neighbors. If/when you have children that will be an important anchor.
    You should definitely keep the wood stove no matter what. Also look into getting at least a rudimentary wood splitter, so you don’t need to do it with an axe, which will wear you out rather quickly.

    I am impressed that you are making an effort learning the language and joining the community, unlike some youtubers buying houses in Sweden. To each his own, I guess, but I think your life here will be happier as you are clearly already on your way to become Swedish. Welcome! 🙂

      @@viktoriaberg8706 thank you and I totally agree! I want to be part of society here, not just live in a commune of foreigners. And everyone's so nice here that we'd be missing out if we didn't make an effort.

      You can't become ethnic. Why can't they be Dutch and just happen to live in Sweden and know the language? They are not Swedish and they don't need to be, people need to get over that.

    Impressive undertaking, with a steep learning curve! We bought a similar homestead 12 years ago and we know the struggle, although we are Swedish, born and raised in Värmland. 😊
    I don't want to be a besserwisser, but there is an old saying here in Sweden about firewood that really has logic to it:
    One fells the trees in winter (the ground is solid frozen and hard, thus avoiding damaging the land), process them into firewood so they are ready by Easter, and then they dry (outside, in piles) and are ready by midsummer. Then one moves the firewood to dry storage in a woodshed (with good ventilation).
    There are a lot of reasons to this, humidity in the logs and in the air being important factors. Splitting wet wood is preferable and logs from birch will rot really fast if one doesn't split them open the same season. After midsummer the air gets humid and firewood won't dry up in time for winter. Too dry (old) firewood is also not the best. There's a whole science to this really!
    In the beginning there is so much to learn and too little time, but we learned the hard way that processing firewood like this is the best. Regards from another homesteader 😊

    I love that you get the help inside your community and pay the people living there. This is so great for integration.
    I‘m really impressed how you two are doing this.
    Just one small tip: dry your wood inside the barn, not inside the house. It will leak some resin at some point and this will ruin everything in the visinity of the wood - been there, done that 😀
    Veel plezier met jullie nieuwe huis ☀

    Welcome to Sweden! I could recommend you to consider keeping the woodstowe on the kitchen. It is almost impossible to get something as good as the one you have . The thing is even if the electricity goes out (happens now and then) you still have heating.
    Ask locals about it and see what they use.

    • @Toms_Sweden

      @@gunlindblad6816 thanks for the suggestion. We will replace it with another wamsler with the same functions so I think we won't regret it. And unfortunately our water pump is electric so we cannot heat the entire house with the stove if the power goes out. That might be a project for further down the line though :). We also have a 'normal' woodburner upstairs not connected to the heating luckily.
      We have talked about this with all our Swedish neighbours and friends and they all seemed to agree with us so I feel quite reassured.

    • @Zoroff74

      A modern pump has such a low power usage that it's possible to run it for days from a power station (which is a good thing to have). With a generator too you can manage weeks without electricity.
      Welcome new Swedes.
      / Preparedness Guy

    • @gunlindblad6816

      @@Zoroff74 the thing is if it that low usage of electricity I would not count on it when it gets really cold.
      I have 2 heatingsystems in my house. One is a heatngpump, viessman big one and the other is a pelletburner also a really big one. During the cold season november to april I run the pelletheating because the heatingpump doesn’t make it. Now I have a big house but still I live in the Stockholmarea.
      Just a warning, it doesn’t always work as the salesman says.

    I live in Norway, I buy raw wood in the early spring, and keep it in an open garage, it is ready to be used in December. Be careful of storing wood in the house, I only take in what I will burn in a couple of days or so. Wood storage indoors can bring unwanted guests, like wood eating ants and health issues like allergies and mold issues. (All firewood have mold spores) Be sure to have ventilation between the logs and the wall. I have an agreement with a local farmer, he removes snow for me. Cheaper than buying expensive equipment. I do have a Honda snowblower for the smaller jobs here.

Zweden is mijn thuis.

    Not far away from where you live there is an old abandoned mountain facility and a few factory buldings that was used to produce gunpowder during 1940-1945. after the war the facilities there was looked after and put on standby so that we could use them again if needed but in 1981 the military blew up a few buldings and tore out machines and other stuff so its mostly empty. its still very fascinating to wander around the old factory part and especially the mountain facility. since you live so close i think it would be cool for you to discover about what secrets your area beholds. i'll send you cordinates private somewhere if you are intrested.

    Oh, I'm Swedish but I'm impressed by you!
    Just an advise! Buy an Air Heat Pump. For your house you can get one for 30.000 with installation. That will lower your heating costs by 2/3. It adjusts automatically, so when you have the fire burning, it will turn off, and then go on again at whatever temp you want.
    In the summer you can use it as air-conditioning.
    Also, in the long run, better insulation and better windows/doors lower your heating costs.
    Just some advice from a "Nordbo"!
    Much luck in the future! 👍

    • @Toms_Sweden

      Hi thanks for the advice! We have a heat pump in the kitchen but since that's exactly where the fire is, we don't use it that often. Also, it doesn't heat up the rest of the house very well. It's not connected to the radiators or anything so it's OK for downstairs but not for the entire house. We mainly use it for AC in the summer now.
      To be honest, the electrical heating is not that bad. We have it connected to a smart home system with connected smart thermometers in every room. This way it also only turns on when needed and together with the "vattenmantlad kökspanna" the electric bill isn't too scary.

    You do as you like with your plot but I was surprised you planted trees in the old meadows. That old "kulturlandskap" is on the down, and trees are at an all time high basically. More and more old pastures are lost to more "economic" forestry. Pollinating insects need meadows. The most herbs grow on fields that are grazed and not fertilized, or harvests of hay were taken once a year. This will let lower flowers grow and bloom and not just tall grass. Let a farmer harvest hay or do it yourself to keep the old farming landscape.

      You have a good point and since planting those trees I did change my mind. I wouldn't mind some more shading and shelter near the stream but I don't plan on planting any more trees in the meadows, apart from some fruit trees in one small part on the other side of the road.

    The culture clash in this video is soooo funny; A City boy filled with energy and excitement buying all sorts of way too small machinery. The size of the equipment is generally great for the Netherlands in the city where you have a, according to the Dutch, 'big' house and garden .... And then you end up in Sweden where things are.... different. For me as a Dutch 'country girl', who has lived abroad, I can see the differences. It might be frustrating for you, but afterwards you can have a good laugh about it with a campfire and a good drink (that Dutch friends have taken with them....).

      @@babalawohrg I am aware and agree up to a point but I believe I also mentioned that we have plenty of meadows that we keep unmowed and we plan on planting more trees and plants in the garden areas, it's just a matter of priorities. And the idea of unmowed land is nice and holistic and everything, but practically it also needs to make sense for 2 people, dogs and cats (who don't enjoy mosquitoes, midges and snakes).
      So I agree with your point but we need to strike a balance. And now it's too much to the lawn-y bit of that balance, but entirely unkempt would be too much to the other side.
