I come from a completely secular background, but growing up in Eastern Germany in the 90s felt like everyone was telling certain folk practices or fairytales and superstitions and things like that very openly. My parents knew everything about it. They just weren't practicing anything, because it was very uncommon in the former GDR to be spiritual. So sadly I don't know more about it. 🤔

I think in the discussion about closed/not closed and ancestry you need to take into consideration how small Europe is. We have a lot of cross country connections. For example I'm from Norway and we have a lot of connection folk magic wise to the other nordic countries, but also to Scottland, Germany and Eastern Europe. Maybe because the vikings traveled so much and brought stuff home idk. I just learned that the Ukrainian traditional folk dresses are damn near identical to our own bunads, and turns out the vikings traveled to Ukraine and may have brought inspiration for it back home. I may also just be looking for excuses to buy madamepamitas book on Ukrainian folk magic idk lol.

I've also seen references to ancestry have three categories repeated across several sources: blood, place and time. One, of course, is lineage ancestry based on your genetics; one is spirits of the land and the other is spirits from your spiritual history (mostly applies to those who believe in reincarnation). If a local spirit reaches out to you then you should be allowed to commune and learn from it even if you aren't part of it's origin historically. Obviously do so wisely and with respect and be open to learn, but don't be so afraid that you close yourself off to the energies right in front of you.

I use cinnamon for banishing (cleansing and protection more often but also banishing). It's technically more of a protective one if you're looking at that general category of properties. But at one point I accidentally brought something nasty into my home (thrift stores are wonderful places... but only if you don't forget your protection that day...) I was unable to get rid of it by myself (I could bind it I just couldn't get rid of it on my own) so at one point my friend was over and they do almost entirely intuitive stuff and don't look stuff up but are very good at what they do (they have a lot of helpful ancestors and guides I'm pretty sure). Anyway they used a couple cinnamon sticks to kick the thing out of my wards, still attached to the item (it happened to be a doll, I collect them) so we put it in a plastic bag in the freezer and it went straight to the dumpster when the sun was up the next day (in the afternoon). But specifically the cinnamon sticks were to essentially make a pocket so it could be out of my wards enough for me to actually rid of it (because I carried it inside when I got it, essentially inviting it in because I am not smart). Not really fully banishing I guess but banishing it from the wards.

And I wanted to let you know that I had a very good time reading it. My first attempt to start witchcraft was back in 2001, when I was 10 or 11 years old. I only had one book, and it was rather discouraging, because it was very different from witchcraft content nowadays. They basically told witches to be so and so... So I didn't stick with it long. I'm now a practicing witch since September 2020 and I enjoy reading beginner books so much. Yours is a great beginner book and I would love to have one like this back in 2001. 🙂 Thank you. PS: you've mentioned your parents several times in your book. I'm interested in how they encouraged you to be true to yourself. I'll be honest, the line of thinking that say's "If you're not Italian, why do you want to study Italian Folk Magic" sounds too similar to the white supremacist "you can't practice Heathenry if you're not Scandinavian." While I doubt that's you intent, that is the same kind of thinking. Italy is still Europe -- in fact it's the center of the first major colonizing effort. It's not an indigenous or colonized community who are protecting their very identity from being co-opted. So, I think we need to push a little and really look at the implications of telling people they should practice magic outside their ethnic origins.

My family used cinnamon a lot for banishing as well as warding, and it's still essential to me for those purposes. Cinnamon adds a heat and "kick" that is less explosive, in my experience, than something like chili pepper (for when you want to gently, but quickly, push something out of your life without a dramatic blow up). Cinnamon is also a strong bark, which has a little bite, and I find it great for protection and warding

I can eat a bushel of parsley or rosemary with a grimace I can not eat a spoonful of cinnamon, I can not chew the sticks. And there is a difference between sticks vs powder kind of like using whole cloves vs clove spice. So noting the plants original shape, cut shape, and seasonings. Taking something large and grinding it to be pretty condensed and potent. Cinnamon is also a cleanser so it’s kind of like a shove something more gentle but still aggressive and pushing away. Of course small amounts of cinnamon are welcoming and protective. It has an interesting harvesting method of cutting branches from the tree and soaking them before drying in the sun and over time, so there’s both water and fire elements. it’s good in food beverages to bring a little warmth and spice things up and in other products for its strong sent, but it’s avoided in most skincare as it’s an irritant to skin and eyes kind of like peper spray over a surface. Don’t use real cinnamon in handmade soaps you will feel a burning sensation for sure.

One more thing..lol okay this work sooooo perfect.. calamus and echinacea are good for binding and strengthening spells and rituals images good for adding extra strength to a spell or a ritual but the combination of calamus and echinacea excellent concoction do really sit a spell off and the results are quickly it will disable a enemy spells or works that they do towards you and gives you more of a boost in power but I like to also sprinkle a little dragonblood powder is good ad dragonblood in anything you do because it give you that extra boost amplifying effect in boost

You can also add mugwort but please do your research before ingesting any of these herbs I am no doctor 💜 also, drink once a day (I do twice🤐) during every ovulation day and also when trying to summon your 🩸 in case of an emergency. Do not drink EVERYDAY, the pennyroyal can become toxic is ingested too often over time. I’m always sure I have a 2 weeks “detox” from this tea so also take care of yourself when needed, if ya catch my drift 😬❤️

I've got mixed feelings about ancestry requirements for practicing because I come from a Heathenry/Norse angle and people use DNA to be really fucking racist in that context. Was my ancestry part of why I looked in the first place? Yeah. Heathenry literally blankets the countries my ancestors are from (England/Scotland in Anglo-Saxon, German in Continental, and Scandinavian in Norse) but people always meme on Americans that claim ancestry in places they've never been to as the reason why they practice. My family has been in California for at least 100 years, but no Native Ancestry. Should I ignore how long my family has been here (gratefully without slave owners or colonizers, just lower means immigrants from Europe) because my ancestry isn't here technically? It's so sticky that unless its a 100% for sure closed practice then I hesitate to caution people away from it. That might be the reaction to racist assholes saying you have to be white to be Heathen, but ehhh... hard to say.
Frankie, this is off topic, but would you recommend sigils to an absolute beginner? Like for protection and other stuff too? they seem pretty simple and straightforward, and they can be kept pretty low-profile because my parents don't know I am trying this at all..
Honestly sigils are one of those easy to learn magics that can be expanded upon as you get more comfortable and freer in your practice. Especially since you typically make your own. They can be added to other works, or anointed with oils, they're so versatile that yea, very beginner friendly. Also on Scribd is the pretty popular sigil witchery book (I am totally blanking on the authors name, but the cover is a gorgeous blue) and digital books are also comfortably low profile.
i absolutely love your book and i used your return to sender spell in my craft - boy was it strong, i've fainted after my spell was done and been basically dead for 5 days afterwards (my own mistake) and my 2 y/o chicken randomly died the next day so idk what happened there but it was a very strong and successful spell 💀💗 in my almost 8 years of witchcraft i've never experienced anything like that
Cinnamon is good for banishing in large quantities the idea is it brings in good after it’s used. Like a large cinnamon broom smells strong as hell and using it cleanses the area while also allowing prosperity. A large spoon of cinnamon can choke someone or is so antibacterial that it causes a negative reaction. (You can use cinnamon on plant roots to prevent certain rot) The idea is it’s like a sweeter version of a pepper or spice because of the color/flavor/heat: things like spicy/sweet bell peper, peper flakes, or habaneros or jalapeños of various color various heat and affects different parts of the face. (Sinus, tongue, throat, heat in chest or heartburn)
Hey! So I have a question about practicing Italian folklore. I totally don’t want to be disrespectful in doing so. I don’t know if I’m Italian to start off (actually truly think I am not at least not in this life)🤣 I only know my moms side of the family which is Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. BUT here’s the thing, since before I can remember I have been drawn to Italy. I don’t know if it’s a past life or what’s actually going on but I feel a sense of comfort, warmth and joy even now just talking about it. I cook only Italian food and I’ve never actually needed to follow a recipe it’s like I just know without any guidance. I have been fascinated with the culture and history. A place that I’ve said time and time again if I go to visit I would never come back 🤣. I obviously would never want to upset the community, so I don’t want to do something that I shouldn’t. What are your thoughts on this?
I've had the same thing with Judaism a few years back. I felt so drawn to it, wanted to learn everything about it. Only ate food from there. I even learned Hebrew and English to study excellent source material. I wanted to know everything about it! I was surprised to see that people in the Jewish community were so open about teaching me. We didn't really know about my ancestry back then either. But still me being interested in their culture was kind of flattering to them, so they were pretty open to teach me. (And also it's important in their culture to teach Non Jews, which is not the same as people wanting to convert to Judaism btw.) But I have to say that I found one person first and she introduced me to the rest of the community. I was researching a lot about my ancestors as well, but mostly these were dead ends. Until my grandmother told me that my great grandmother was killed in Holocaust, but not, because she was Jewish, but because she was suffering from mental illness. I don't learn about Judaism anymore right now, I might go back to it, once my kids are older. But nevertheless I feel a great appreciation for these people. They've treated me so well. 😍 My tip is to be open about what you like and see what other people are willing to share. Maybe find someone who you can have a working relationship with. They teach you, you teach them. Of course it's important to establish healthy boundaries in that regard. 🙂 Some practices might be closed, some might be open, like Frankie said, learning about it is okay. Maybe you can do a spell to attract someone like this in your life. 🤗💕
On the topic of practicing folk magick a culture one is not a part of. I am Norwegian but I have practices from several folk magick systems all around the world, as to why? Because they are practical and fill a need, simply that. To me folk magick is not just a cultural expression they are practical ways to achieve what you need in your life. Now there are things one just will not understand if one is not a part of the culture that developed the practice. Someone in sunny California who have never seen snow will not fully understand the rune Isa for example, but that do nto mean practices developed in other cultures are not useful. I will use whatever information I get my hands on that are useful for me.
I love watching how your demeanor has changed over the years. For example, going from "not that I don't trust you ☺️❤️" to "I don't trust you 🔪" lol. I love watching your ability to assert boundaries. It feels like listening to a grandparent who will absolutely tell you off for your foolishness (in a loving supportive way ofc)
with snake skin: maybe you were thinking it would help you "shed" the energy of the person? as for cinnamon, I line my windowsills with that + chili powder to keep pests out of my room in the spring and summer, so i could see how it might have protective qualities, although I typically use it as an amplifier for other herbs that it pairs well with.
I think cinnamon could be banishing?? I've seen it used for protection and I use it for that too, there's also some medical properties that you could associate with banishing????? Ig it's not a common banishing herb but you COULD use it (there's also personal associations too but that's besides the point)

No one can tell someone what they can and cannot access, but like... why would you want to utilize a folk magic that is not connected to your folks. It's bonkers to me. One more thing..lol okay this work sooooo perfect.. calamus and echinacea are good for binding and strengthening spells and rituals images good for adding extra strength to a spell or a ritual but the combination of calamus and echinacea excellent concoction do really sit a spell off and the results are quickly it will disable a enemy spells or works that they do towards you and gives you more of a boost in power but I like to also sprinkle a little dragonblood powder is good ad dragonblood in anything you do because it give you that extra boost amplifying effect in boost

You can also add mugwort but please do your research before ingesting any of these herbs I am no doctor 💜 also, drink once a day (I do twice🤐) during every ovulation day and also when trying to summon your 🩸 in case of an emergency. Do not drink EVERYDAY, the pennyroyal can become toxic is ingested too often over time. I’m always sure I have a 2 weeks “detox” from this tea so also take care of yourself when needed, if ya catch my drift 😬❤️

I've got mixed feelings about ancestry requirements for practicing because I come from a Heathenry/Norse angle and people use DNA to be really fucking racist in that context. Was my ancestry part of why I looked in the first place? Yeah. Heathenry literally blankets the countries my ancestors are from (England/Scotland in Anglo-Saxon, German in Continental, and Scandinavian in Norse) but people always meme on Americans that claim ancestry in places they've never been to as the reason why they practice. My family has been in California for at least 100 years, but no Native Ancestry. Should I ignore how long my family has been here (gratefully without slave owners or colonizers, just lower means immigrants from Europe) because my ancestry isn't here technically? It's so sticky that unless its a 100% for sure closed practice then I hesitate to caution people away from it. That might be the reaction to racist assholes saying you have to be white to be Heathen, but ehhh... hard to say.
Frankie, this is off topic, but would you recommend sigils to an absolute beginner? Like for protection and other stuff too? they seem pretty simple and straightforward, and they can be kept pretty low-profile because my parents don't know I am trying this at all..
Honestly sigils are one of those easy to learn magics that can be expanded upon as you get more comfortable and freer in your practice. Especially since you typically make your own. They can be added to other works, or anointed with oils, they're so versatile that yea, very beginner friendly. Also on Scribd is the pretty popular sigil witchery book (I am totally blanking on the authors name, but the cover is a gorgeous blue) and digital books are also comfortably low profile.

i absolutely love your book and i used your return to sender spell in my craft - boy was it strong, i've fainted after my spell was done and been basically dead for 5 days afterwards (my own mistake) and my 2 y/o chicken randomly died the next day so idk what happened there but it was a very strong and successful spell 💀💗

Cinnamon is good for banishing in large quantities the idea is it brings in good after it’s used. Like a large cinnamon broom smells strong as hell and using it cleanses the area while also allowing prosperity. A large spoon of cinnamon can choke someone or is so antibacterial that it causes a negative reaction. (You can use cinnamon on plant roots to prevent certain rot)
The idea is it’s like a sweeter version of a pepper or spice because of the color/flavor/heat: things like spicy/sweet bell peper, peper flakes, or habaneros or jalapeños of various color various heat and affects different parts of the face. (Sinus, tongue, throat, heat in chest or heartburn)

Hey! So I have a question about practicing Italian folklore. I totally don’t want to be disrespectful in doing so. I don’t know if I’m Italian to start off (actually truly think I am not at least not in this life)🤣 I only know my moms side of the family which is Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. BUT here’s the thing, since before I can remember I have been drawn to Italy. I don’t know if it’s a past life or what’s actually going on but I feel a sense of comfort, warmth and joy even now just talking about it. I cook only Italian food and I’ve never actually needed to follow a recipe it’s like I just know without any guidance. I have been fascinated with the culture and history. A place that I’ve said time and time again if I go to visit I would never come back 🤣. I obviously would never want to upset the community, so I don’t want to do something that I shouldn’t. What are your thoughts on this?
I've had the same thing with Judaism a few years back. I felt so drawn to it, wanted to learn everything about it. Only ate food from there. I even learned Hebrew and English to study excellent source material. I wanted to know everything about it!
I was surprised to see that people in the Jewish community were so open about teaching me. We didn't really know about my ancestry back then either. But still me being interested in their culture was kind of flattering to them, so they were pretty open to teach me. (And also it's important in their culture to teach Non Jews, which is not the same as people wanting to convert to Judaism btw.) But I have to say that I found one person first and she introduced me to the rest of the community.
I was researching a lot about my ancestors as well, but mostly these were dead ends. Until my grandmother told me that my great grandmother was killed in Holocaust, but not, because she was Jewish, but because she was suffering from mental illness.
I don't learn about Judaism anymore right now, I might go back to it, once my kids are older. But nevertheless I feel a great appreciation for these people. They've treated me so well. 😍
My tip is to be open about what you like and see what other people are willing to share. Maybe find someone who you can have a working relationship with. They teach you, you teach them. Of course it's important to establish healthy boundaries in that regard. 🙂 Some practices might be closed, some might be open, like Frankie said, learning about it is okay. Maybe you can do a spell to attract someone like this in your life. 🤗💕

On the topic of practicing folk magick a culture one is not a part of. I am Norwegian but I have practices from several folk magick systems all around the world, as to why? Because they are practical and fill a need, simply that. To me folk magick is not just a cultural expression they are practical ways to achieve what you need in your life. Now there are things one just will not understand if one is not a part of the culture that developed the practice. Someone in sunny California who have never seen snow will not fully understand the rune Isa for example, but that do nto mean practices developed in other cultures are not useful. I will use whatever information I get my hands on that are useful for me.
I love watching how your demeanor has changed over the years. For example, going from "not that I don't trust you ☺️❤️" to "I don't trust you 🔪" lol. I love watching your ability to assert boundaries. It feels like listening to a grandparent who will absolutely tell you off for your foolishness (in a loving supportive way ofc)
with snake skin: maybe you were thinking it would help you "shed" the energy of the person? as for cinnamon, I line my windowsills with that + chili powder to keep pests out of my room in the spring and summer, so i could see how it might have protective qualities, although I typically use it as an amplifier for other herbs that it pairs well with.
I think cinnamon could be banishing?? I've seen it used for protection and I use it for that too, there's also some medical properties that you could associate with banishing????? Ig it's not a common banishing herb but you COULD use it (there's also personal associations too but that's besides the point)
In my brujeria practice, cinnamon tends to be used for quite a few banishing and protective properties
your take on outsiders learning Italian folk magic is the same take I have when anyone who isn't black and or Sothern want to practice hoodoo. No one can tell someone what they can and cannot access, but like... why would you want to utilize a folk magic that is not connected to your folks. It's bonkers to me. Like we all have ancestral magic to access, and utilizing it can be life altering.
