  • Alot of you have been asking me to review the Musician Audio Pegasus Dac in comparison with the Denafrips Ares 2 dac. Some of you thought that this dac compared favorably to the more expensive denafrips venus dac. Welp, here is the full truth from our side.
update: Musician Audio contacted back to us again recently - They offered to take the unit back and diagnose the issues communicated. We are open to re-evaluating the Pegasus DAC if they wish to after sorting out the defects. more details to follow.
UPDATE 2021: They have decided to cut all communications with us. We do not know if they ever fixed the issue.

We follow very close guidelines when we post negative reviews - we only post when it concerns harm to the public in any form or fashion. If the company gave us any benefit of a doubt to hold their warranty claim, then this video would have not made it out. Cheers
Here are examples of when a video like this won't be posted (and yes, these things did happen before):
    1. The unit was offered to be sent back for them to take a look into what was going on. With or With no replacement to us
(we have had a unit sent back with no replacement 2 times from 2 different companies - no review was posted)
    2. Any type of solution was offered in technically trouble shooting this
(this happens too many times to count)
    3. A request to not review the unit period because they are well aware of the issues and are looking to fix it in the next batch
(this has happened once - no review was posted)

Reviewing a defective unit does not say much. I've had defective gear from the likes of McIntosh, Cambridge, etc before. Even well known names churn out lemons from time to time. You should have returned it and asked for a replacement unit to complete your review (no replacement no review should have been your stance with them). Who knows...you would have been able to keep a non-defective unit after you'd completed your review!

@@wa2368 He mentioned he asked them to take the unit back and they ignored him, then later when they reported its defective they sent him a graph lmao. What exactly can be done when the manufacturer clearly doesn't give a hoot?

@@wa2368 if you have not noticed in the video. We are not commenting/concerned about the performance but the rather "shady attitude" of this company. "This video is not for you"

@@Jayiyagi I feel that your review is a stab at the company and it is more argumentative that that that wants resolution in the matter. From what I can see another reviewer had an issue with his initial unit as well but their was a positive resolution at the end as he received his replacement unit to give a rave review of the product. I think it is only fair to try your best to resolve issues before making possibly a rightful criticism. Because of your review you can hardly expect the communication to be positive between you and Musician audio. Maybe although you might feel you are justified in your criticism you have focused too much negativity is this good for your channel I do wonder indeed??

I hope you guys get a chance to properly review the Pegasus.
I have had nothing but a great experience with this DAC and Aoshida. Before placing my order, I confirmed that I could return the unit if I didn’t like it. After that, quick shipping and great service. Mine arrived with some micro scratches on the top plate from shipping - they sent me a new plate. They answered my technical questions quickly.
As for its performance, it’s an incredible piece of gear, especially with upgraded internal fuses and good clean power. XLR out sounds the best and to me, AES in (not the USB).
It was the DAC I was finally looking for after owning the BiFrost 1, RME, and repeatedly auditioning the Qutest.

I’ve had my Musician Pegasus for a few days now. It’s really wonderful. I stream Tidal with Roon through a Simaudio Moon Mind 2. I’ve been converting the signal in the moon to DSD and it’s glorious. Also I had a question about downloading drivers and emailed Musician Audio. They got back to me the next day and fully answered my question. When I’m listening to music I use the aes/ebu input. When I’m watching the tv I use the toslink optical. They both work great. I’ve no problems. The more time I let it sing the better it gets. BTW my other dac is the Mytek Brooklyn 2. The mytek is a very pleasant dac. It just doesn’t have the punch and liveliness of the Pegasus. I recommend the Pegasus.

I was going to buy the Ares II from a local UK dealer. But then they put the price up.
I took a gamble and ordered the Pegasus. Customer service was fast and responsive to my questions. The DAC arrived very quickly and it connected seamlessly into my system. USB sounded great but ultimately ended up using the I²S connection.
I read many user reviews of the unit and comparisons between the Ares before ordering. I don't think you can go wrong ordering from either company. R2R DACs bring that magic!
What pushed me to take a chance with the Pegasus was the overall positive reviews and that the basic design is the same as Ares but using higher quality internal components.

But, boy oh boy, these amps have me jawdropped everyday.. I have gear that has costed magnitudes more (Luxman, Accuphase from early 2000s, etc)...I would have saved a fortune in the past 20 years if i'd found out about Chinese audiophile gear sooner. I sense Chinese audiophiles have unforgiving ears and this is definitely no compromise gear is built to keep those guys happy....

I owned the DAC and no issues... also, in my system it sounded better than Denafrips Venus which is 3 times more expensive... in my opinion the problem is with the quality control of such complex devices. R2R DACs might be easier faulty than other devices... also, the fact is that this DAC affects a lot the selling of Denafrips DACs, which are way more expensive concerning the sound quality! Also, Singapore is a very expensive country ;)
Just my honest opinion. I am not trying to defend this company or to undermine the other. Regarding the dealing with Chinese companies, no comment. I still own a defective DAC made by a Chinese company already gone :)

I applaud your integrity. I think, understandably, that many reviewers would simply not review an item
if it doesn't meet their standards. That, unto itself is good. In this case, your review serves as a "cautioned"
warning in that you state your concerns along with the "provision" that the DAC you have "in hand" could be
faulty. In any case, the response of the manufacturer relevant to your actual experience was a perfect
example of "failed marketing purpose". If the DAC (you received) is faulty then the manufacturer really
missed the boat because all they had to do was send you a replacement. They didn't ...

Negative reviews are important because they set expectations. I think most people in the audio hobby are tired of *only* glowing reviews. I/we don't have to agree with your negative review, just like we don't have to agree with your possessive reviews. But it's good to hear where you stand on products, good and bad--and that you've got the balls to publicly say what you think--again, for both good and bad.

  • @77Cardinal

"It could be that this unit is entirely faulty"
If sending out an individual unit for demo / evaluation, it's up to the company sending the gear to check it and make sure it's working properly before it ships. With that said I've had two different pieces of audio equipment show up damaged in shipping in the past month. One box had been dropped or thrown so hard that a circuit board and i.c. components inside the metal case were broken. I think you've offered the company a chance to correct any problems and try again. Fair enough.

I was not satisfied with mine at the beginning but after changing the settings in the software I now love it, so there are so many things going on software based that you can get a false impression easily. Not saying that this is the case here just something I had to learn along the way. I don’t own this Dac but a different one to make this clear.

Optical cables can vary greatly especially at higher res, try swopping out another. I had signal dropouts thinking my dac has finally come to end of service. Changing out the cable did wonders for me. From what's been shared the responses from the manufacturer seems elusive that sometime requires imagination or estimation at what they are trying to drive at. BTW I had a fair share from such encounters from my purchase experiences online. And even though I can communicate fluently in their native language, somehow I still have issues understanding them sometimes. That said, I have met great people along the same path.

I have the Ares II and have had various Topping pieces and really have had no issues with the units themselves, but I have had difficulties getting my point across when dealing with one Chinese distributor. I was sent a European AC adaptor for one Topping piece (I was not asked which one I needed when ordering) and it took over a month to get them to understand what my problem was. More of a language translation problem than quality issue. No issues with Topping, Denafrips, Vinshine.

One of the issues that buyers of equipment may have, whether or not they are even aware of it, is that what they are buying have the same components and built quality of the units being reviewed (aka companies doing a bait and switch). My understanding is this happens, how often or how rare is the question.
This particular company has come out with a new speaker, not many in the initial production, and only one review but it is a very positive review and a product which has me very interested. SO why haven't I jumped on it as I want to replace my current speaker with something of the size being offered by this company, which is what I am aiming at? Well, the following:
    1. It is just 1 review and nothing else is available even from early adopters and knowing a return would either be very difficult, expensive or flat out denied prevents me from being an early adapter myself.
    2. Warranty issues...if it were a seamless process if and when needed, would also be a positive. But stories like this, and there are a few, doesn't instill confidence to make an early purchase either. Anyone know if warranty is done in the States?
    3. The dreaded bait and switch where only a few products are upgraded to sound at their best for reviewers while mass production models are built with lessor quality/cost components. This is a matter of trust. Even dealers might not even know if this is happening.
So, how does one address these issues and feel confident in making a decision? The speaker I am talking about seems to compare favorably with the US made CSS 1TDX and while either would be fine, one may prefer the look not to mention the price difference.
Any comments or feelings what I posted regarding potential issues and how you might come to a decision to either buy or not buy?

Personally I believe you may have gotten a faulty unit becos mine is all good and I am connecting thru my Mac via USB and also tried using Coax from my streamer. To me it sound better than Schiit MB and not too far from Terminator. I also felt the bass to be much tighter than MB & Terminator. The background is as dark as D90 and yet the airier sound where you can feel there was space between the singer and the band. Maybe The courier drop the box?? Over here in Asia their customer service respond seems ok to me.

That doesn't speak well for quality control, but if I were the manufacturer, I would have sent another unit for review. There's clearly something wrong with the unit you have considering the other reviews that indicate no issues with the product.

Nonsense, some companies are much better than others when it comes to design, build quality and quality control. Also, Japanese products are generally built to higher quality standards than in some other Asian countries. Some Chinese companies built first rate equipment, some not so much.

    • @NickP333

      Steve C#
Firstly, you sound confused in what you’re trying to say. I also completely disagree. I also said nothing about Japanese vs Chinese or any other country’s products. You brought that up. This could still happen to any company regardless of their reputation, where they’re based, or the “design, build quality, and quality control”. Of course, it’s much more unlikely to occur with certain companies, but it could still happen with a piece of gear made anywhere in the world despite who made it or where it was made. I’m not going outta my way to be argumentative either. Just stating a fact.

With so many companies that pop up selling gear out of China I wouldn't be surprised if it's rebranded something else. It's good to know folks out there are looking out for others. Some good stuff has come out of China. Hate to see good Chinese companties that are trying hurt by companies that are shady. It just boggles my mind. Perhaps the language barrier doesn't help.
