  • Knowing my limits isn't something I've ever been particularly proficient in. So when I had the opportunity to learn to SNOWBOARD (!) as an amputee this past weekend, I was faced with a difficult choice - one of failure and success all in one moment. 😉

    The jokes about how you still haven't found your foot after like 2 years of looking for it are and will always be funny to me.

  • @carolusrex2407
    @carolusrex2407 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    You joking about your foot missing and that it might be found somewhere actually caused me to have dreams about randomly meeting lone feet in the supermarket, at the bus station, in my bearded dragon enclosure and so on. The feet were very friendly, though. Dreams like those aren't unusual for me, I've dreamed more bizarre things than that. But I feel like you might find those dreams funny.
    Also, little Snowboard tip: when you're tired, you can just sit on your Snowboard and use it as a sleigh, which is easier and faster than walking and also a lot of fun. I've been doing that when I started snowboarding.
    On where you feel the pressure when snowboarding, it changes the more you practice. As someone with two meat feet, when I started I felt a lot of pressure on my toes/front foot. After the "I'm constantly falling and have no clue what I'm doing" - phase, obviously. By now, after a few years of practice and becoming actually pretty good, I do a lot of braking and changing directions just by shifting my weight, and I feel it almost exclusively in my knees, unless I have to stop rapidly.
    I'm really proud of you for knowing your limit. I've been following your channels from almost the beginning (gosh that makes me sound like a stalker, I'm sorry) and it's so amazing to see how far you've already come. Love you!

    "People might look at me and judge me."
    This is very true, but if you will continue reading, I'd like to share a story from my own life.
    About a year before my leg was amputated my father had surgery to harvest a bit of hip bone for transplant into my leg.
    This would have been in January of 1972. My sister was born in February of 1972, so Mom was HEAVELY pregnant at this time.
    So, here is my father sitting in a wheelchair with 2-year-old me in his lap and my very pregnant mother pushing him along.
    People were giving my dad some really dirty looks, obviously judging him, a fit looking young man being pushed around in a wheel chair by his extremely pregnant wife.
    Yes, people were judging my dad, probably extremely harshly, but also very unfairly because they didn't know the rest of the story.
    Don't let unfair judgment get to you. In the long run, it won't even matter.

    • @ninadowling3046
      @ninadowling3046 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It happens all the time. I've always wondered what gives people the right to be judgmental, hateful, unmannerly, and just plain rude! I'll never understand where they picked that crap up! But trust me I can stop it!!! I applaud you and the way you handle yourself and your Dad as well. Give my love to your family! Stay safe!!!

    • @erictaylor5462
      @erictaylor5462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ninadowling3046 Well, I was 2 at the time. I'm not sure how I handled it.
      My point is, people are going to judge. Sometimes they will judge unfairly. The trick is not to judge other unfairly. Think about what you see going on. Maybe you're not seeing everything. There may be a good reason a man might be in a wheelchair. Like maybe that guy is in a wheel chair because he just went through a painful operation trying to save his son's leg.

    Hey Jo, I've been a snowboard instructor for over 10 years now and I've taught adaptive snow sports for like 5 or them. The fact that you were willing to go up the chair is amazing! A lot of beginners tend to shy away from that on their first day.
    Also, anyone who's really passionate about riding doesn't even think twice when someone decides to walk down the hill. We're just glad to see someone out there trying a new sport! Especially lady shredders! 🤙 Snowboarding is hard to learn and we've all been there.
    Just know that we're super proud of you and will always support you!

    Over the weekend I played a scenario paintball, where I was my team's second in command (XO). I wanted to play the entire 6hrs of the game. Unfortunately, I had to stop and rest sooner than I mentally wanted. My body started failing me after 2hrs, but I kept pushing. After 4hrs I had two severe calf cramps. I sat down to rest, but was unable to return to the game. My team's General awarded me the MVP award, but I didn't feel like I earned it. I didn't play for the entire game. I didn't feel like I did my best. Thank you for helping me realize that listening to my body was the best thing that I could do. It's 3 days later and most of the pain is gone or at least manageable. Feeling proud of my accomplishments. 💙

    Good job Jo!!! so many people should learn from this, I would have stopped and walked down with you to show solidarity and show that its ok to stop when you need to, even if I continued after walking you down it would show its ok to support someone at their limit, I have seen so many people get angry with someone who needs a break or cant do as much as they can and i do think that it can be really damaging to confidence and self esteem. A lovely lady supported me through a challenging time riding and she walked with me for months rather than getting angry at me for not pushing myself. Her support changed everything for me. I hope I have got across what I'm trying to say, I'm dyslexic and find it difficult to write what I'm thinking and I tend to ramble on a lot. Thankyou for your inspirational videos. you show no matter what your limitations if you take it slowly and listen to your body you can do anything you out your mind too. xxx

    Its not defeat. Its hard to do, especially if u start as an adult. And u have your leg to think of.
    Skiing/boarding is about having fun and it just takes a lot of hours to really learn how to do it well. U cant skip that. Good that u recognized this while on the slopes.
    Btw. something i recently learned. Because passes are so expensive in the US, Americans tend to go hard on the slopes and putting in lots of hours in a day.
    In europe, where skiing is slightly cheaper, ppl take more time and relax more and have more breaks while skiing. Because of more vacationdays they also often go a week instead of a weekend. And they generally take more lessons. Its an interesting cultural difference.

    This video could totally have been named "I found my balance". Learning to snowboard is all about balance, you hopefully get changes to work more on that. But it is so incredible difficult to recognize the line of when NO to push your mind or body any further. To see that it's time for rest. That is WISDOM AND BALANCE 🧡 I'm so happy for you! I struggle with seeing the line and respecting it every single day. And buy the way, people do sometimes walk down because of a problem with snowboard's bindings or smith - been there done that 🤣

    I'm not an amputee, but I also had people invite me to go skiing in Colorado. I also have the same tendencies to push through things to avoid some kind of imagined embarrassment. But after 2 trips down the mountain, a lot of anxiety, altitude sickness, and some pain, I quit and spent the rest of the week exploring the shops (and meeting many dogs!) in Breckenridge and had a MUCH better time! Ski towns can be fun without the skiing!

  • @seaninness334

    I skied both Breckenridge and Steamboat. There are plenty of people that, for whatever reason, come to the conclusion that snowboarding or skiing is not for them and walk down. I did ok at snowboarding but enjoyed skiing more. I haven't done either in the last 10 years. It may feel like a walk of shame but it's not. You won if you tried, you won in knowing whether it is for you or not.
    I tried rock climbing which was the same for me. I did ok practicing in the indoor gyms but was crap outdoors. I tried fencing, which was fine, but I wasn't as passionate as I had been with other martial arts. So much to try out there. 😃

If you’re ever out in Germany around Zugspitze I’d be more than happy to take you out and help you get back on snow safely.

    30 odd years ago I was a Ski instructor, Nationsl Ski patrol, and certified to teach handicapped skiers.
    Taught several guys with one leg to ski. It was a blast! Never did snowboarding though.

      I’m an above knee amputee and never learned to ski until after my amputation. I learned to ski and board as well as became a ski instructor (CSIA and CADS). I raced and am now a recreational sit skier.

      @@lioninwinter9316 I actually am a very strange skier. Lol. As a 3-Tracker I found the outside edge the easiest to get onto. I struggled with the inside edge. I think it was fear of hurting my stump if I went down whereas going down on my good hip didn’t bother me in the slightest. I also struggled to get enough flexion in my knee because I have pretty severe osteoarthritis in the knee I still have. This means it hurt a lot. That’s why I ended up changing to the sit ski (used to ride the HOC Groove, then moved up to the HOC Edge and now have a Praschberger Bullet - the Bullet is my dream rig!! Perfect for me and my skiing). That’s has saved my knee big time. I still teach both able bodied and adaptive skiers of all ages.

    Congratulations Jo! Please keep pushing the limits and making these inspirational videos! I got my definitive leg last week and am still getting used to it. But guess what I was able to do for the first time today with my personal trainer...I skipped rope!!! I think I made it to a maximum of 10 skips but still, this was something that seemed totally distant a year ago when I was still learning to master walking. My big goal this year is to go back to the Appalachian Trail for a day hike with my good friend. Take care! Avelino

    I love picturing this random sole foot just hopping along down a sidewalk on a bright sunny day 😂 ... i can also relate to the urge to push through. it takes alot of effort, but I've had to learn to stop before hitting my limit, so i can be somewhat ok in the following days. It takes alot of strength to stop I've learned. But it's ultimately so worth it

She was in brutal pain she would NOT let herself stop snow boarding until she couldnt even walk cuz her legs would go numb!!! I kept telling her to stop and she wouldn’t!!! Jo please contact Adaptive Adventures. They are an amazing adaptive sports program with wonderfully trained instructors who can help you learn to do almost any sport you are interested in. They run ski and board programs as well as summer programs. You might find skiing more comfortable for you (I sit ski and it’s like having a private roller coaster with no rails!!). Please call them and give them a go. And LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!! When your body tells you to take a break, do it. You’re working so much harder now and you don’t want to push through pin and cause damage. No point in making yourself worse off than you already are! It’s a hard lesson but a super important one.
