The entire band is supercool and impressive but I'm a drummer by nature and Larnell Lewis is unbelievable. I literally can't believe what he does and how he does it with such touch.
I try to explain to musicians who didn’t like learn theory or go to school for music or whatever. Why that keyboard solo (and the horn solos too) is so special is all right there in the very beginning. When he just subtly moves those chords around over that staccato bass and drum groove. And it’s like he’s just exploring all the different key changes and possible ways to play each chord over those bass notes and it’s fuckin incredible. The fast parts are impressive and are what people look for. But I just loved the way he moved around that groove so effortlessly and made it feel like he was exploring every possible way he could. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t a musician who been playing since I was a kid. And I play multiple instruments. And it’s the one talent I was really born with is just understanding miusic. Cause I always wish that I could hear certain songs as an untrained ear just to hear it a diffeeent way. But with this song? I’m glad I’m a music nerd and can actually hear everything haha. This whole perdormanxe is amazing by the way it’s like almost an hour I think and every song is great and it seems like the bassist is who is kinda leading everything. And you can see him almost selecting who to solo when they get to those breaks. And he lets everyone kinda shine at some point. Amazing as fuck the entire thing.
Glad you mention the constant adjustments Cory is making in his sounds, I love that. In all 100 reaction videos I've seen nobody mentioned Cory is doing the fasted solo parts unisono (same notes on both hands) over separated keyboards, what's like speed writing left- and right handed together: it's hard, even for keyboard players. It explains the "Hear me!" and "I hear what you're doing" - look between Cory and Michael League (the bassist). I also want to mention the horn section - it is insane: every timing is flawless, all notes are hit exactly timed. And have you ever heard a guitar solo so technically perfect, without fret glitches? He sounds and looks modest, as if he's just playing guitar as every guitarist should do, but I challenge you: find another one that's paying so clear and balanced. Just some hints to look for when you watch this video the 744th time.
I audibly gasped when the notification for this came up on my phone, and my excitement was definitely rewarded. I've watched this performance and/or heard the song countless times, but never once considered that Cory Henry is crafting the sound of that mind-blowing solo in real time. Of course, I had always noticed him making adjustments, but I never thought about the complexity crafting the sound adds to an already astoundingly complex solo. That observation adds a whole new layer to how I view and listen to it - and a whole new level of respect for Cory and his musicianship, which I didn't even think was possible. Thanks for pointing out something I likely never would have noticed on my own, guys! Btw, if you like the percussion and drums, Larnell Lewis' Zildjian Live performance with Ghost Note is an absolute clinic in both, if you haven't seen it. Thanks again!
Snarky Puppy’s We Like It Here is one of the most influential jazz fusion albums of the last decade. This is clear from the views and praises in the TH-cam vide of the album’s crown jewel, “Lingus”, especially towards Cory Henry’s baffling synth solo. But what is just as baffling about this album is the sheer talent and dedication of the drummer Larnell Lewis. Believe it or not, he learned all the intricate parts and little details of the music, with the exception of two songs, in a 7 and a half hour flight on his way to Europe, to record the actual album. Michael League explains it in an interview with the Happy magazine: “We had a travel issue with one of our drummers the week of recording for the album We Like It Here in Holland. It looked like he wouldn’t make it, so we called a drummer from Canada named Larnell Lewis to see if he could come play at the last minute. He had done 2 or 3 gigs with us, but almost all of the material for the record was new. He agreed, got on a plane two days later, learned all of the music on the flight, and landed the day of the recording session. He knew the music better than we did. It was unbelievable. Then he joined the band as one of our three steady drummers.” So he not only saved the day, but also gave us some of the best grooves you’ve probably ever heard and earned his rightfully deserved place in the Snarky Puppy’s lineup 🙂
I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this song and y’all have hit the nail on the head. The changing canvass comment and the round hole/square peg analogies were spot on! And the think about Corey Henry playing the keyboard ✊🏾✊🏾
I love that you pointed out how Cory alters the sounds during his solo. He's playing one of the most well-known keyboard solos of the last decade and it's so casual that he has time to mess with the dials! What a legend!
Loved you guys comments about the song, even after listening to it so many times, just like you guys, I got some new insights I haven't got yet! This song is an absolute masterpiece
Wait a minute. Guys. Your banter and energy listening to this - mimicking the various parts, anticipating what's next - reminds me of when I was a younger with my friends sitting in our car late on a friday night - away from parents and responsibilities - listening to our favorite tunes on the tape deck, dissecting each and every line and each and every instrument, just diggin' on it. If we had the internet and YT and reax vids then, I think our scene would be very close to what you guys are doing now in your room. We would probably be doing just this exactly. Keep it up mates.
You know what, I am writing this here. I feel a lack of admiration to such details when Larnel doing "Fall back kid" stuff. On the 11:12 you can hear how he doing like rounds make a sign to soloist to fall back slowly, then on 11:19 you see that Kory noticed and back from the dreams and zone and on 11:23 you can her Larnel make a tsum tsum tsum noticing everyone about the upcoming end of solo and back up to main theme. I think Larnel are an outstanding drummer. As well as each of the musicians here. They so easily pick up signs and so creative when doing solo it is mesmerizing. P.S. I want to play some instrument sometime, but I am a bit far from music :) Also I am pretty sure that before this concert Larnel discuss with everyone signs how to end and fall back and how to follow. I think it is the most important part of musicianship.
Love that you are honest at 0:30 saying of course you have heard SP before! It's hard to fathom that self--proclaimed musicians in reax vids haven't. I'm thinking (as I listen to this for the 1000th time), bruh I know every note, fill, nuance by now because...why wouldn't you? It's gold every time.
Incredible song. I forget how it happened but I found some Larnell Lewis videos a few weeks ago and ended up down a whole rabbit hole that day. Crazy impressive drummer. I’ll have to check out some more of Cory Henry’s work.

are you a fan of the drummer Louis Cole of KNOWER? He's played with Snarky Puppy but I think you'd like his playing in the song "Overtime".
Man that was fun as hell to watch. Hearing you follow right along. I'm no musician, so I don't get the face effect so much, but I definitely still feel what you mean. That feeling of "why does that work?", the anticipation while Corey never gives you what you expect, but it's all just magically the right thing to play.
If you guys are into Snarky Puppy & Animals as Leaders I'm just going to go ahead and assume you're also in Vulfpeck. Get them on the channel, Joe Dart is a superb bass player.
"I know you guys hate me pausing it" I don't think it's that, I think it's more the fact that you don't rewind a few seconds back before resuming. That makes you miss details that are inherent to the flow, like for example how the audio (mix) expanded briefly right after the first time you paused it, only to go back into a tight space a second later. If you pause please rewind a few seconds, it's my nr. 1 pet peeve on reaction channels if they don't do it.
You should definitely react to Marcus Gilmore's Zildjian Live performance! An absolutely insane track, to be certain. Great reaction as always. Much love!
I misread this as "Skinny Puppy" and I thought "this is going to be good!" - I don't know who Snarky Puppy is but if you want to up your "Puppy" game, you may want to shift direction! 😁
lol that racing analogy reminds me of Colin McCrae man didnt know what brakes were. even when he rolled his car he some how would get it back on its wheels and place in the race. Rip
The bulk of the song is in 5/4, but theres definitely a few spots of something else. Just came to this song about a week ago, and have been listening incessantly ever since. So, give me a month to get bacl to you on that.
easy subscribe and great commentary. If you all aren't already familiar with Badbadnotgood, check out "Confessions Pt II (Feat. Colin Stetson)" for another innovative track in 5.
That's what I thought about the solo section, too, but I think there's a pattern where there's a bar of something else in there, too. Haven't nailed it down yet.
The A B C sections are in 5/4. The keys solo and the trading at the end are in 4/4 that bass drum ostinatio is constructed from both sides of a 3-2 rumba clave in a rather unique order. You can’t keep calling yourself a drummer if that 5/4 section was tricky to figure out 😆
I initially really liked a few Snarky Puppy songs and added them to my playlist, but I never ended up listening to them again after the first handful of listens. Clearly they are incredible musicians, but the music just seems kind of hollow in my opinion. It doesn't evoke any emotions in me aside from the initial novelty. It's like a hyper-realistic painting of a cat or something---clearly a ton of skill was required to paint it, but the end result is just a photo-real painting of a cat that could've just been taken with a camera.
Alternatively I feel the same about this band. Only I kinda don't like it BUT I CANT STOP LISTENING TO IT. And... um.... you ain't ever heard a drummer like the drummer from Meshuggah live: th-cam.com/video/bAJ1WTGNISk/w-d-xo.html
First time I've seen JB happy during a song!

I couldn't tell you how many times I watched this and other songs. And, every reaction video. Lol
I'm a music lover & I love watching people react to any Snarky Puppy video

Shofukan was my first. The moment I heard applause, I was like WAIT THIS IS LIVE?

I love that washed out splashy "China-Type" sound of the cymbal sitting in the snare. Larnell is just an alien.
Loved you guys comments about the song, even after listening to it so many times, just like you guys, I got some new insights I haven't got yet!

almost clicked away when you said it wasn't a first time reaction, but glad I stayed

When i listen that song for the first time , it was like i take a bus to city center but it arrives to south pole ... How do we get here ? :V
Man I miss seeing these guys at the bar in Denton, TX when they were in college at UNT
As someone else pointed out
You'd enjoy the song overtime by Knower

Lets goooo!!
Room full of musicians, staying this tight and no one is reading. CRAZY!

Sounds like it switches between 4 and 5 (3+2).
yes, the song is in 5. ALL the 5's
I hear it as a half-time 5 for the first section then 5 for the next. When Cory starts it's in 4 to the end though i think
easy subscribe and great commentary. If you all aren't already familiar with Badbadnotgood, check out "Confessions Pt II (Feat. Colin Stetson)" for another innovative track in 5.
5/4 key solo is in 4/4, a very strange 4/4
That's what I thought about the solo section, too, but I think there's a pattern where there's a bar of something else in there, too. Haven't nailed it down yet.

This track makes me sweat
You 're planning to "re"act not to "during"-act, or....?
I get the same reaction to this group as Primus. I know its good. I respect it for its skill. I just never want to listen to it.
That's a very interesting take

I'm trying to be polite, but "shut up you two" is more appropriate...

Such a pity that you're talking to each other during the tune, so vey annoying! Take a point to stop and do it then.
