First time on your channel. Watching reactions to this group and song is kind of an obsession of mine. 😂 I get that this is a lot if you’re not a jazz head, but I glad you could at least appreciate it. Couple of interesting points:
- The reason for the crowd and headphones is because this was a recording session for their album We Like It Here. The audience is listening to the master mix while it’s being played live.
- Snarky Puppy is a collective, so the group members fluctuate depending on the needs of the group and everyone’s schedules. The bassist (Michael League) is the composer.
- The drummer (Larnell Lewis) plays with them regularly, but was not originally scheduled for this session. They called him in at the very last minute because the scheduled drummer had passport issues and couldn’t get there. Larnell knew one or two of the songs on this album but not the rest, so he learned them on the 6-hour flight to the studio, had a couple of rehearsals with the band and then they jumped into the recording.
Well that’s last point is absolutely bloody mental to be perfectly honest 😂 also, welcome to the channel, hope you at least find something to enjoy!
@@markabusireactions Larnell Lewis is a true jazz drummer, he really wasn't in his element on his Drumeo video covering a Metallica song. But for this Snarky Puppy video he had to learn all their drum setlist in the plane that carried him from europe to the US just the day before the concert. I think you might have been confused because he played in an old (+- 50 y/o) Rn'B/funk way that also originated heavy metal with drummers like Buddy Miles, Mitch Mitchell or Tiki Fulwood.

@@markabusireactions BTW you're totally spot-on about this song requiring full active listening that could be hazardous while doing something like driving or practicing some manual or physical activity. But with a song like "Something" (feat Lalah Hataway) it's somewhat feasable.
Shofukan (from the same album) is another masterpiece of their's that's a little more accessible, I think.
This band takes me to new places.
Yeah, I'd have to be in a mood for this too, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. That opening section is the very definition of "laid back." The founders of the band are from my alma mater which has an excellent jazz program. Lyle Mays went there before playing with Pat Metheny for many years, and Norah Jones went there, and many others. I don't know why but this group reminds me of John McLaughlin and Jan Hammer with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. If you're gonna drink Dr. Pepper from a 2-litre bottle you'll need to absorb all things Texan. Thanks for checking them out!

I'm glad someone else sees the comparison to the Mahavishnu Orchestra. In fact, Cory Henry's solo here reminds me of prime Jan Hammer.
Actually, the verse and bridge / refrain are all in 5/4; the verse is half time from the other. Michael League has said this is SP’s nod to dubstep.
This was recorded in a studio in the Netherlands.
The drummer is Larnell Lewis. He is a last minute replacement who learned nearly this entire album ON THE PLANE RIDE OVER.
Corey Henry is the keyboard soloist… he was a childhood prodigy now adult virtuoso.

I love this band! I'm 75 and grew up on prog ro and jazz, but my musician son introduced me to Snarky Puppy a couple of years ago. There is such joy in their playing. Please check out the players too. I know you appreciate the musicianship, but you should open your musical soul to jazz. No limits...Try Bitches Brew for a crossover intro. Warm thoughts from NZ!

One thing I can say is I'm 62 and showed this to my 27yo Son who was visiting from the Marine Corp a few months back and made him watch this even though he really didn't want to because Dad listens to 'Adult Music'. After he watched it, his reaction was similar to yours because I asked him, 'what did you think', and he simply said one word, 'INSANE'...!! Hope you can appreciate it...!!

Fn love Snarky Puppy, such a great vibe to work to. It was definitely pre-written, not an improv, since the drummer has mentioned he learned the music on the plane from America to Europe. I just adore the laaaaaazzzy way the horns work in this, coming in just a hair's breadth "late" all over the place, and how it lends such a laid back feel to the music.
It is gorgeous isn’t it? I just don’t know how the hell people pre-write stuff like this!
The sax, trumpet and keyboard solos were definitely improvised.
The charts were --prewritten, with space for improv. Like almost all jazz.
The whole project is AMAZING!!
I think that is the first time I have heard Larnell Lewis referred to as a rock drummer 😂
The obvious place to go from here would be Clown Core. Computers is a great song by them.
I think I meant he sounded a little like the drummer from the Mars Volta. And rather than doing the kinda jazz drumming would’ve expected, he was a bit more… heavier? I dunno lol

@@markabusireactions If you want to see Larnell Lewis in one of his best recorded performances, and want to find out why he's held in such high regard, search for _Larnell Lewis - Zildjian Live._ It's Larnell doing a song that he wrote while the inestimable Ghost Note Band performs a marvelous arrangement to his material. And by the way, none of this is _traditional_ Jazz, _per se._ It's _Jazz Fusion_ (Jazz Funk, if you prefer.)
It follows this format of a Jazz-oriented ensemble playing with headphones (where they have a click track in addition to their audio mix) and the audience has just the audio mix. Many Jazz players in the past, like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, or Miles Davis didn't care much for recording in studio sessions because there was no audience to "add to the energy". They'd have rather played life and be recorded well, which is the case here.
Oh, and also, you'll see Nate Werth, the "bongo player-not a real musician" you referred to, going above and beyond to earn his keep. (Never underestimate a percussion player. I've seen rock drummers contorting their arms into pretzels trying to recreate something like _Sympathy for the Devil_ live and wanting to walk over and say "This is a really simple trap kit part, mate. The rest is additional percussion. Just go back, re-listen, and focus on the basics.") A great support percussionist is a treasure. And he's doing much more than "bongos". He has his own kit of hand drums, chimes, cymbals, timables, cowbells, etc. A lot to bring to the discussion. When you hear Larnell's drums explode into a high-energy blast at 07:48, Werth is all up in that. If you muted him from this track, you'd immediately miss him. Support Percussion: very much musicians, very much needed.

It's interesting, I'm in the demographic that isn't supposed to like this. I'm not a musician and I don't understand any of the technical stuff. I adore this, and all of Snarky Puppy. Discovered them from a friend a couple of years ago, then saw them a few months ago live. (Spectacular! I didn't stop grinning for hours!) It was love at first hearing, and I probably listen to Snarky Puppy more than any other band or musician - both when I'm in the mood for a close listen, and when I just want something on background. They make me smile, and even the songs I know well - like this one - still surprise me, even when I know what's coming. I don't know how that makes sense, but - there it is. I haven't been this enthralled with jazz since I found Chic Corea's Return to Forever in '75. It's just magic to my ears.
See I don’t even listen to jazz. I have kind of blue by Miles Davis because I’m a basic bitch, but other than that I’m at a loss. I should maybe try some more stuff!
@@markabusireactions I do like being surprised, and what I think of as "good jazz" (arbitrary, my own likes/dislikes) always surprises me. It stretches a dissonance into a harmony, it makes me hold my breath while suddenly the rhythms go wonky but always then end in a "perfect" place. The sounds make me happy. I know that's not a typical way for musicians to think about music, but ..... I'm not a musician. I like beautiful and unpredictable things. So perhaps it won't work for you - but - if you aren't wed to predictability, give it a shot. But there are a lot of jazz musicians that are incredible technicians but maybe not artists? Or at least, not in pursuit of beauty? Snarky Puppy makes beautiful music.

I fucking LOVE Polyphia, specifically because they ARE masters of technical wankery. Tim was trained as a classical violinist, and you can see that come through in the way he plays and composes sometimes (to the detriment of emotion). It's not a bad thing - but he has DEFINITELY gotten better in integrating heart and soul into his songs. Compared to Snarky Puppy, he's a baby when it comes to composition and arrangement. SP is on another level altogether when it comes to having both width AND depth in their songs. No instrument is lost in the sauce.
I listened to some Snarky Puppy and quite enjoyed it! I might have to give Polyphia another chance, I think when I first listened to them I was maybe being a bit snobbish hahaha. But I like music that smacks me in the feels. I can appreciate the technical stuff, but it’s never gonna get me the same way an emotional chorus will 😂
You're not missing a damn thing, you just haven't learned the language of jazz yet. We're all born with the ability to like certain sounds, but others we don't "get." It's like hearing another language, you hear it, you realize it's saying something, but you don't understand what it's saying. If there's to be an emotional content delivered, you aren't sure how it should make you feel.
With many genres of music one comes to, one has to learn the language if one wants to appreciate it. You don't have to learn it, of course... but I, for one, think it's worth it to learn every musical language you can. I think it's interesting that you ARE in the middle of learning a bit more of the metal language (certain screamers, for instance, you're finding more palatable than others, and as you learn those, the others slowly become more palatable, etc.)
Another really difficult genre of music, for example, is chamber music. Took me quite a while to grasp that... but interestingly it was learning things like Jazz and foreign musical styles that made it easier to learn chamber music. That is, as you learn more musical languages, you learn how to learn faster. Or at least that's what happened for me, and others I've talked to.

You’re absolutely correct, and that’s why I have been refusing to give up on certain genres, even though people keep telling me to lol. I’m enjoying the discovery, and I’m finding stuff all the time that’s challenging me and exciting me!

I agree with you... Snarky Puppy ALWAYS comes across some much better than other bands like this. They are so amazing! and the bassist is a killer composer! His interviews have so much insight.

I agree that full appreciation of "Lingus" requires one's attention. It isn't elevator music, and I imagine if I was actually trying to concentrate on something else I might find it annoying. That said, it seems to me to have more heart than say, Polyphia's work. For a group (a trio) that combines outstanding musicianship with poppy hooks and serious jazz fusion chops -- may I recommend the Swedish group 'Dirty Loops?' You might start perhaps with "Rock You," or one from their great collaboration with Cory Wong -- say, "Follow the Light."

The first time I listened to Lingus, I had it on in the background while I did something else. I did NOT like it. I zoned out for the beginning, and zoned back in during the keyboard solo. Without the beginning to anchor me, I felt lost in a sea of chaos. You are right, this is not a song to passively listen to for mood, nor a background music.
I like their collaboration with Jacob Collier on "Don't You Know" better. The ensemble work is just as good.
Collier is a musical genius in so many ways that musicians tend to like him better than no matter what genre or what size band he is in anyway. He has tons of solo work and with his own band as well as collaborations with full orchestras. I couldn't search here to see if you'd ever reacted to him or heard of him. I hadn't until recently even though he's won 5 Grammys. Here are 3:

One of the big dog puppies is Larnell Lewis, the drummer. I understand he does tutoring videos on Drumeo. I've seen vids of him playing the most insane songs after one listen through (including Enter Sandman, although I don't know how he avoided hearing this until that point). @@markabusireactions

First time subscriber to your reactions, really enjoying them mate. This was the one that drew me in, long-time SP fan, yet to see them live as I live in that forgotten land down under (maybe one day). Just picked up on your early comment about whether the pieces are pre-written etc and was reminded of this short but totally enjoyable documentary about the making of this very album. Not a reaction suggestion but well worth a watch if you need some background to the band and particularly to this track. You have to flow with the music and not get caught up with the details a appreciate it for what it is. You've got a good ear, but sometimes just turn off the technical side and flow with it.
The song was losing me for a while. The keyboard solo, mostly.
This seems like the other side of the coin of Polyphia, where they have more technique than taste, but instead of technique wankery, it's structural wankery. Like, it's cool that you can do all that, but you forgot to make a bunch of it sound good.
Bloodbath seemed bad because the vocals didn't match the music at all, but I think Polyphia at least sounds pleasant generally.
