I think 'Dave' the engineer who re-engineered the capstan and manufactured most of the new components required deserves a round of applause for doing a cracking job. To do this without actually seeing and measuring it directly and getting it so close that Kieth's life wasn't made unduly difficult in putting it all together is outstanding engineering. Take a bow sir. We the viewers salute you.
I agree wholeheartedly. The ultimate test is, when this is put into service under real life conditions, and survives. Potentially, the safety of the ship and crew relies on this piece. This has to work, not just be visually impressive.
@@SunnnyDay i have no doubt that all of this is going to work. All the work on and around Tally Ho is of the highest standard. Have trust in Leo, Keith, and all others of the teams involved. Even the camera work and reporting is excellent.
What a beautiful restoration, you should be very proud of your work Dave.. congratulations on being part of this.. the first guy that put this together we will never know, but you will be part of this wonderful project forever..
Thank you so VERY MUCH for all your hard work for tally ho. They should name you Honorary Admiral of the boat for the tremendous amount of work you put into the capstan!!
I'm amazed at the amount of work you've put into this project. Those of us who have followed Leo over the years can't thank you, and all the others, enough!
I'm wondering if Keith has kept any sort of record of the hours and hours devoted to this project? As well as the time spent in the shop working on this, there will be many hours, and perhaps some sleepless nights, spent thinking things through and designing his "game plan" for each stage in the process. It must be truly huge, and I only hope that the YT reward system is sufficient to account for all that time and effort. I'll now be a devoted follower of this great teacher and machinist.
At first I was like "Ugh, just use a small engine cylinder hone to clearance that gear hole", because I'm a mechanic. Then I saw what you did with the homemade flap sander. That's a damned neat idea, and did a perfectly good job. Well done.
The astonishing level of craftsmanship routinely displayed on the Tally Ho build is displayed here by Keith Rucker! This capstan is going to sit proud on the deck of that beautiful ship!
Keith is so patient never getting upset just undoing , adjusting and putting it back together as many times as it takes. Some people I know would put a sledge hammer to it and be done with it. I am a wood guy , I got here from Tally Ho, I never thought I would be fascinated buy a piece of metal on a mill.I love these videos Thanks for sharing.
I’ve followed this project as a link from Tally Ho and have found your channel to be superbly instructive. You have very good attention to detail and an excellent teaching style - which makes your channel so addictive. I shall be staying tuned even when the capstan is wrapped up. 👍
I’m impressed by how the new parts have been ‘married’ to the old unit without them looking ‘foreign’. When you consider that there’s a hundred years between the technologies, that’s amazing!!
Dear Mr Rucker , Thank you for your time and attention. The skill, patience and care taken in the recovery and up grade of the capstan bears no rational motive other than the salvage of a forlorn capstan. Truly magnificent and brilliantly done . I am amazed the job isn't just a diatribe of expletives with the fight it has given you. You have prevailed and credit to you and the master craftsmen involved, the designer, patternmaker , foundry man and yourself the machinist. I congratulate you for a top quality job and a master class of professionalism. Best wishes JcW
I don’t know which impresses me more, the quality of your workmanship or your problem-solving skills. Both are highly admirable and, for me, informative and entertaining. Thanks!
I think every traditional, large wooden boat should have a capstan. I know it's probably a pipe dream, but it'd be really cool to see all the minds behind this project come together to put these puppies back into production.
As a Tally Ho fan that's hopped across to watch. Congratulations Keith on a wonderful job and an entertaining and informative series. Much admiration and respect.👏👏👏👏
I'm sure Leo will be very happy and grateful that you're putting his capstan together and making sure everything works. It's not just the presence of your machine shop that's important, you know more about this project than anyone in the U.S.
Almost ready to ship. Following this Capstan project has been of great interest to me. Today's honing of the bore with the die grinder and emery cloth is the only operation of this whole project that I could have done with the tools in my shop. Thanks to your skilled description of the steps you are doing, I have been able to understand and follow everything that has been done.
Fitment of parts and exactitude of dimensions is the province of workmanship in any trade, craft and manufacturing. Kudos to Keith for all of that you do to contribute to that spirit of craftsmanship. There are many of us all over the world appreciative and inspired by your efforts.
I saw that boring operation a mile off and figured out exactly what you were going to do. Less of a bore and more of a honing operation wouldn't you say?
I am so excited to see the progress! I watch Tally Ho every episode with the same happiness as watching you do all this work for the same project. It has to be the highlight of my 'entertainment' I can't wait to see the capstan on the boat, and see Leo smile when he drops anchor. GREAT WORK
Keith you are a real craftsman! It is amazing what you are doing for me as a carpenter. Keep up the good work. And I am looking forward to the next video. Greetings from The Netherlands
That's a good trick with the emery cloth poor-man's flap wheel, because you wind up removing small amounts of material concentrically. I hope I remember that to bail out of similar jams.
Wow! Would like to see an estimate of the number of hours that have gone into the remaking and modifying of this device from everyone involved beginning to end. Learned a lot about the challenges thar have to be met when the project becomes ever more demanding and complicated! Looking forward to it weighing anchor!
If all the machine work we've watched you perform didn't cement in our minds that you're a master of your craft.... The fact that you could apply all that anti-seize without ending up painted with it from head to toe or tracking it home reminds us of our place in the pecking order, lol.
What a great job on the Capstan, wow big job! But you persevered!!! Thanks for sharing! A great job by all. I;m sure Leo is pleased. Looking forward to the installation.
i recently got to see some of the videos from the Tally Ho with the newly rebuilt capstan in action. It was very satisfying to see it being used as intended and with the added power drive. Great work. I don't remember Keith referring me to those videos I just stumbled across them and was pleased that I did.
Todays video is a tribute to the value of precision. Keith’s work has been precise, to drawing and so has Webster’s. That the assembly went so well , even if none too fast, shows that whoever prepared the original drawings that went to the UK, were good too. There are a lot of very able people who have worked very hard to make this happen.. a very hearty well done all round.
Hi Keith, as usual mr wonderful. Once bitten twice shy, the fitting is what it is all about, and you are right no point of sending out a bag of bolts, quality is the name of the game.and that is what you send.
For the purposes of reducing dead air only, I often find myself wishing you would motorize your gantry operations. Watching the impossibly slow progress for each pull on those chains, as much as I appreciate the mechanical advantage involved, is worse than watching grass grow. Paint drying is a pleasure in comparison.
I have watched a ton of your videos, but this series fascinates me. If my shop teacher had been as patient and clear as you are, I might have spent my life another way. Thank you sir!
So satisfying to see this transatlantic partnership working out so well. The worrying whether the motor upgrade will fit together properly is finally over. That gear mechanism tweaking was a thing of beauty. Well done, Keith and David!
Not only was it made in two workshops. Also in two countries, with England measuring in millimeters and the US in inches. The risk of mismatching parts is high. But it looks like everything fits or can be adjusted. Excellent work.
Straight Millwright work !! Whilst I was raised on " neversieze " the new and better thing is " moly" we used spray molybdenum on some 5" Dia coupling bolts on a hydro turbin , took them in and out several times never galled. The turbin was at Bonneville dam on the Columbia River in oregon. When we tore it apart it was assembled with white lead , which was also superior to neversieze but very toxic if not handled properly. Anyway a little wisdom passed down. God bless you always
As I came to the issue with the bore on the gear hole I was thinking in my experience us millwrights in the field would have used a adjustable reamer to open a couple thousandths with the emery cloth being the last resort. Anyway it worked !!
Well done Keith! I've followed the TallyHo project since the beginning. It's what brought me here, but what you do is fascinating, and I will continue to follow your channel as well.
22:03 Great job fitting all this together Keith!! .. They say every hour in the shop? You can expect it to save up to FIVE hours on site! .. The crew assembling this on the ship itself, will thank you heartily whe it all bolts together!! :) Great episode! Oh and love the Made in England, mechanism to raise and lower the gear too! .. works great and look great!!
What an amazing piece of equipment. As usual your work is first rate. I look forward to your videos. Keep up the fantastic work and I am sure I am not alone in my gratitude for all your efforts.
I have learned so much from watching your videos! The attention to detail is what makes you a craftsman. I have so much enjoyed this whole series, and seeing Tally Ho rebuild has integrated this whole process.
Masterful, Keith - I’ve learned a lot from your capstan project videos - nothing harder than a complex project with design and mechanical engineering and fabrications happening in different countries. You are a hero - great work!
I'm impressed by your patience, as well as your foresight in proceeding in such a way that you can make minor adjustments when necessary. The skill you've demonstrated is inspiring and very instructive. Excellent work, Keith!
Just a little fine tuning to make sure everything is working perfectly between two different assemblies made by two different machine shops. Of course they both mesh together as they should, I’m sure that the designing engineer is smiling watching this video thinking this is just as I planned. Well done everyone!
Dear Mr. Rucker. 👍👌👏 A lot of fiddly work masterfully finished. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular.
1/1000th of an inch clearance, from across the Atlantic, on vintage machine tools. Pretty darn impressive! Well done gentlemen!! Exacting tolerance and fitment deserving of the Leo and Tally Ho!!

All parties involved deserve praise for how well it has gone together so far.
A bit of fettling, but minimal really.
@@SunnnyDay i have no doubt that all of this is going to work. All the work on and around Tally Ho is of the highest standard. Have trust in Leo, Keith, and all others of the teams involved. Even the camera work and reporting is excellent.
Absolutely! I followed Keith since long before Tally Ho so i had no doubths whatsoewer. 😀 Yes, hats off to the British guys too!
Any ideas of what the final weight is gonna be?
A fascinating marriage of 19th and 21st century technology. A trans-Atlantic collaboration. Excellent work.
Keith Rucker. National treasure.
Now that's the truth!
What a beautiful restoration, you should be very proud of your work Dave.. congratulations on being part of this.. the first guy that put this together we will never know, but you will be part of this wonderful project forever..

A Craftsman and a Gentleman
AMAZING collaboration between Keith and Dave - and with an ocean between them. It is very exciting to see it all coming together.
Right info. Right tools. Right parts. Add adaptability based on solid experience…
Perfection. Thank you for showing this.
I'm amazed at the amount of work you've put into this project. Those of us who have followed Leo over the years can't thank you, and all the others, enough!

I'm A Mechanic And All I Could Think Was A Ball Hone Or 3 Stone Hone Would Be My Go To For Such A Thing!!!
Rock On Brother!!!
Jobs like this need specific precise and perfectionistic personalities with a mathematical approach to machining and mechanics
Brilliant craftsmanship Keith. Your attention to detail pays off in the end. Tally ho is blessed with this piece of art.
8:26 - I'm just 44 years old and seeing Keith on his knees crouched over like that makes me wince.
😂 Me too!
If I could go back in time I'd yell out my younger self to baby them joints!
Me three, or perhaps 42 !!!!
I'm 74. Piece of cake if you are regularly getting under, over, around, and through your projects and with usually no help to "hold up the other end".
At 72 and injuring both knees at 18, I feel every squat he performs 😂

Thank you so much for making these videos and contributing to the Tally Ho story.

Webster did amazing work.. That lift mechanism is beautiful
Couldn’t agree more. That chain gypsy is a thing of beauty!

Everything stops when these videos drop.
Noooooooooo, I have to wait for another video! I bet Dave and Leo watch your videos with great interest.
What a team to work across the Atlantic and match ir to function correctly. Looking forward to the next step. Tks Keith.

You will be included in the history book of Tally Ho. Time is what we are given and all what we can give
You've almost got it, my friend. Soon this "obsolete" antique machine will be back doing its job for another century.
That's a good trick with the emery cloth poor-man's flap wheel, because you wind up removing small amounts of material concentrically. I hope I remember that to bail out of similar jams.

Spin up the Drum! (Expanse) can't wait to see this on the boat.
If Leo had to pay for this, it would probably be the most expensive capstan ever constructed. Nice work.
I'm sure he is paying for it. These folks probably don't do this stuff for free.

Such beautiful work. A joy to watch.
You are so relaxing yet interesting to watch. Awesome project
Keith, you have great patience.
I swear you must have a second set of hands under that apron. You frequently end up doing a 2 person job alone. Much respect.

This bloke could make a video about anything and I would give it a like before I even watched it! 😊brilliant work!!!
I work in an aerospace machine shop and you would be surprised how often we have to manually buff .0005 out of a bore
You just have to make sure no one is looking before you do it

Thanks for the video Keith. Getting closer, alway a few unknowns in a project.
Good call on the use of the emery spinner sander 😊👍
The old meets the new! So cool ...
Holy heck that thing is a beast! Leo will be able to use it as a salvage winch if he wants to. I've enjoyed your build series Keith. Well done!
We love your work and skills Keith!
I'm going to check my work 🤯 we need more of you
Always loved fitting up Assemblies and ,making them work correctly it's really one of the best parts of the job 👍🇦🇺
Nice work Keith. You're definitely the best man for the job.
Have not watched. I bet it works perfectly. Such talent is a privilege to witness. A1
Well done Keith! I've followed the TallyHo project since the beginning. It's what brought me here, but what you do is fascinating, and I will continue to follow your channel as well.
Excellent work of all who have worked on this Tally Ho capstan project.
Slow and steady wins the race
Nothing you do is boring, Keith! You don't have to skip filming anything you don't want to skip!

Fine skills good old school work
What an amazing piece of equipment. As usual your work is first rate. I look forward to your videos. Keep up the fantastic work and I am sure I am not alone in my gratitude for all your efforts.
Very, very, COOL!! A tip of my hat to whomever drew the Blueprints!!

Good morning Keith! Thanks for the videos. Have a great weekend!
Great job Keith in making one’s theory into practice.
A great example of Anglo-American engineering co-operation
I watched this with my grandfather and he found it very interesting. He appreciated your patience to take the time to do the job right
I hope Leo has left plenty of space under-deck. Looking forward to seeing it installed on Tally Ho.
I'm looking forward to the install and the wiring so the motor can be operated from the deck. Leo's systems engineer is top notch.
Some good measuring and planning up front is resulting in a great restoration of this winch. Great work as always Keith.
Thanks for sharing.
Gosh it’s quite the hardware for that small boat. Can’t wait to see it spitting chain.
I'm impressed by your patience, as well as your foresight in proceeding in such a way that you can make minor adjustments when necessary. The skill you've demonstrated is inspiring and very instructive. Excellent work, Keith!
Brilliant project with great engineering!

Well done everyone!
Wonderful work on the capstan - it’s a joy watching a real master at work!
A fantastic mechanical puzzle coming to fruition!
For a lump of iron, you wouldn't think there was so much detail to make it work, but you've done a great job.
More exciting to see if it all goes together than a Netflix action film.
Lookin' Good, Keith! This is the most satisfying capstan clip yet!
(Maybe besides the one where the casting finally came out right!)
It MATCHES UP REALLY NICE ! Wow MATE JUST FLAMIN PRECISION !! 👍🇦🇺👍
Dear Mr. Rucker.
👍👌👏 A lot of fiddly work masterfully finished.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
