Midnight Rollover In The Big Hot Tub

- Got a late night call about a rollover on Hells Revenge Trail at the Big Hot Tub. Justin and I went out to see what we could do about getting them out. Couldn't wait till morning since I had a play date planned the following day with Lilli. So we headed out with lights to try and record what we could. By the time we got there the customer had stabilized the vehicle with a winch line. After assessing the situation upon arrival we rerigged the jeep holding it and used the wreckers side winch to help pull the wheels back under the vehicle. It ended up being a controlled righting process and managed to do no additional damage to the vehicle. After hauling the vehicle back to the shop, the customer pulled the intake and cleaned oil out of it and started it up and ended up driving it home the following day. And what did we learn not to do? Nothing, keep wheeling :o) Everyday is an adventure! (How much did it smoke on startup?)
A lot of people would be nervous driving this trail in daylight, but to go out there and do a successful recovery in the middle of the night takes a special type of expertise. You and your truck never fail to impress. Thanks Rory.

Since I’m certain that you can drive all these trails blindfolded, the night time aspect of this recovery isn’t the impressive part. Hell, I think the TrailMater could do these trails even without a driver! What made me gawk in awe (again!) was the utterly simple solution you applied to get that jeep out. Your intuitive understanding of the physics involved in such a recovery is mind-blowingly admirable…
Wow o wow Rory what a job you did on this night recovery! Trail Mater did the work as usual and no more damage was done. I did miss Shawn and Mike but better to let them sleep so they can open the garage in the morning! Good job 👍

A few things to take note of during this recovery... 1)The mechanical sympathy Rory has towards his rig and the customer's. Really impressive!
2)Only 1 guy in charge during the actual recovery and winching. Shows a tremendous amount of experience and ability!
3)Rory is as calm and collected day or night regardless of the situation.
4)Rory and Trailmater could have done this without lights. The lights was for us... Thanks for that!

Rory, what amazes me is how much you enjoy your work. Nothing ever phases you. You never lose your cool. I appreciate that you worked on this video so that I could have a great start to my day watching another unique recovery.
Rory eats rugged terrain for a midnight snack is a much better title. There is no stopping this man and his machines.
I am so impressed by Rory’s use of rigid body mechanics, geometry, and trigonometry. Oh what the common man could teach academia about the practical use of physics and mathematics. Bravo!
I hope they bring some math teachers to ride along at the offroad wrecker olympics.
He should be brought in as an honorary lecturer for physics and mathematics at Utah state university.

@@kevinwalters7615 I didn’t forget about Eric, when it comes mud he definitely has the experience, but his rig is closer to stock than anyone else’s, he lacks approach and departure compared to everyone’s modified rig, with Matt creating from scratch. I have commented on another channel that it will depend on terrain ( rock,sand or mud), static ( winching) or dynamic (rope). Matt and Rory do full time recovery with Rory having the advantage of more difficult recovers. They are all mechanically sound but to me Rory and Paul have the best Macgyver skills and with welders and air onboard. So it will all come down to the variety and difficulty of the events with the winner being us the viewers
Wish we could have watched this in daylight I bet you did aswell. Setting that Jeep down so gently with a lot of engineering and physics was amazing to watch, then flat tow it out of the bath tub. Best you tube channel out there.Tow truck rodeo will be about who comes second. First is already determined

I love the fact that you never resort to throwing throttle at a situation..I don’t think I’ve ever heard the wrecker much above idle .

I've never worked as a tow operator but I've done a HUGE amount of rigging and moving stuff. Even with all that experience I'm sure I would learn more everyday. Folks, never stop learning. Always something new around the corner.

I really enjoy hearing the Trailmater engine running at just the right rpm to deliver the powerful torque. You've really got this rig's power train perfectly dialed in. Great night time lighting as well. Awesome work guys!
He will pull dead cars and idle up inclines most vehicles struggle with.
Experience with operating the machine is going to make all the difference in the tow truck Olympics I believe nothing beats being familiar with what's going to happen when you do certain things and some people won't be able to have that coming in with new equipment
I agree. Though I haven't seen near a many of Rorys videos compared to the the other 2, I see that Rory completely knows his rig. The Good and the bad if there is one. Unless Matt and Paul take a lot of time to test theirs out, they'll not beat the advantage.

How Hot Wheels haven't picked up on Trail Mater and made a model is beyond me! Skills beyond mortal man Rory.
I was dispatcher at a towing company for short time and went on a few calls. What i have seen you do in just two videos I have watched, is flat out nerve-wracking! Looks exciting and absolutely terrifying! I would never go where you go, but I think I will live vicariously through your videos! You appear to know what you are doing!

You know what’s going to be crazy, when all those guys that are building wreckers start doing recoveries like Rory. Sherman’s Rat Rod tow truck is the only other rig I’ve seen with a boom that can make it where these guys go. I can’t wait to see them all finished and compete in the Tow truck olympics.

That is such a badass tow rig the man is a genius he knows his business good job brother.
Amazeeng! Daylight affords all types of views and angles to effect a recovery. Skill, knowhow, experience & past dues enables Rory to pull off a difficult "release' and then "escape" of the turned over vehicle. The owner is a lucky fellow, his vehicle not that seriously damaged & he got pulled out by a recovery master that knows what he's doing.
You wrecker has an incredible torque and you have great skills to use it ! Amazing !

Looks like Mater could benefit from some better, brighter off-road floodlights for nighttime recoveries like this, especially in the forward direction, that way when you're driving out over obstacles at night you can see better, ahead of any potential issues!

You amaze so many of us. Some of those trails will always be beyond our reach and yet you know them like the back of your hand and can do a trip in there safely at night. Wow!! Justin did a great job filming, not sure other posts really ever caught and reinforced how important it is for the weight on the front of Trailmater as you have said. This one did….!!! Seeing those front wheels come up like that. Again, you just proved to all the naysayers you might know what you are doing!! And I say that with the greatest admiration!

Rory your skills are impeccable you got the upside down jeep out without more damage out of hells kitchen.. Its fricken amazing & blind at night. How many winches does Trailmater have ? I know MATTS new monster rig he keeps saying he's going to have winches all over like you. I love your videos & my money is on you when the tow truck bonanza happens. I love Paul's FABRATS & MATTS RECOVERY but MATER is The master ! No question that trailmater is ultra capable. But Rory, you are the secret sauce. As the saying goes, "it's the indian, not the arrow", I'm sure no matter what vehicle you use, it would be used to the fullest. incredible too that you did that at night, running around there like you were on autopilot. Great video!

That is one impressive rescue Rory. That looked like a textbook rescue that of course isn't in any textbook. Sometimes Jeeps get tired and try to nap. Looks like the owner did a nice job helping with the recovery as well.

This stuff is fun to watch. Where else can you watch wheelies in a rock crawlin tow truck. Scary in the dark Rory.
Having worked in the dark myself everything is different with artificial light. So many shadows and loss of death perception. Job well done! Good thing you know those trails like the back of your hand Rory. Navigating them in the dark otherwise would be a scary proposition.
On a positive note ,the sun is down and a lot cooler , and it’s a good thing you know your area , most of us would be lost driving at night there. 👏 great job.

That would have been an amazing recovery in the daytime Rory but to achieve it in the night without incurring any additional damage to the vehicle was outstanding. This is why you are the best in the business. When those front wheels of Trail Mater lifted off one side after the other looked scary as hell in the night-time video. Really good video for night time and the position the vehicle was in/in the bathtub! But the part I like best, you saved for after the “thanks for watching” phrase, and that was when it was pulling on three wheels and one wheel was riding in the sky, unbelievable! I love the chain stirrups AND the big M on the fenders is neat, but what really takes the cake is the whole TRAIL MATER name on that metal shaft underneath the wrecker.. too cool....I mean who has that!!!!!

I watched this thinking about how exciting it would feel navigating those trails at night in my Jeep, and marveling at Rory doing it carrying a Jeep on the boom. Always impressed watching.
Its impressive to watch you pull a vehicle out of what seems to be an impossible situation but your knowledge of what the wenches and tie straps are capable of are key to success. That and just plain working in the moment and making the necessary adjustments as you go along. Keep up the great work and videos!
