Hey Tom, interesting job and great idea to stiffen the bar. Great to see how you can go outside the box to adapt and overcome. 👍

Thanks Matty. It certainly worked pretty well for what I was throwing at it.

    Hello Tom,
Somewhat challenging job I imagine... I think it would be a breeze when the boring mill.
    Take care.

Hey Paul. It was a bit taxing. The Boring mill would have made this job so much easier.

Nice job on a tough piece, I keep a van Norman portable cylinder boring bar for jobs just like that but it’s slow going as well

My thoughts were along the same thoughts as Steve's, but having the Horz mill up and going will be sweet for the next job like this (@@)! Were finally above 32 dw here in Tx, but another front to hit this weekend 😞. Stay warm, and keep on keeping on, Bear.

The sheppered dog I had years ago absolutely loved the snow. It was great fun. I know i'ts off topic, but still... :)
And indeed, the double boring bar was a very good idea.

Our other Sheppard dog "Copper" loves the snow. Khaos is more concerned about me throwing his toy than playing in the snow. 😀

Great idea with the double boring bar Tom, i was holding my breath when you were pressing in the bush in, seemed to be very tight, on camera anyway.
You've certainly got incentive now to get the Borer up and running.
Great video Tom, bye the way can you keep that snow over there, i hate the stuff when we get it🥶🥶🤣🤣👍👍👍👍

I will do my best with the snow. It was a tighter press than I would have liked. I did hone out the bore so it would be a smoother slip in on the sides.

Your boring bar looks like it is for negative rake inserts. You can't always use that style in a bore because the clearance angle is negative. On a lathe you can set the cutting edge below center to accomadate the lack of rake. On a boring head it is by nature on center and I think this rubbing caused a lot of your chatter issues.

Hello Tom. It's the shits when you have the right equipment for the job but it's not running yet. I had my HBM in my shop for two years before I was able to use it. Many jobs came and went during that time that the HBM would have been perfect for. I will offer one piece of advice when you do get it up and running. Make yourself a bar (or several, different sizes) that you can mount to the milling spindle. Make it a solid bar (say 2" diameter) and then mount a cutting tool in the end of it (either carbide or HSS) and adjust your size of cut by moving the cutting tool outward using a dial indicator (similar to line boring size adjustments). It sounds clumsy and slow but the increase in rigidity over a boring head with 3/4" or 1" bars allows deep cuts and high feeds that more than make up for the slower adjusting time. I did this for my machine because I had a number of frames to machine that had a 3" hole that was effectively 8" deep. I was able to take interupted cuts that were .200" deep at a .010"/rev feed rate, including through weld buld up. I show this set up in my video th-cam.com/video/Rwyym13cLNo/w-d-xo.html . I think you have seen this video as you left a comment on it. Looking at the job you did in this video I would estimate that on my boring mill with the bar I made I could have bored the welded hole to size in probably less than half an hour. (obviously some of that can be attributed to the greater rigidity of an HBM over a vertical turret mill). I got this advice from HBM guys on Practical Machinist while reading about boring on HBM's. I took the advice and it has worked out fantastic. I think you will really enjoy using your HBM once you get it running. Ken

Hey Ken good to hear from you and thanks for the pointers. I have been acquiring 1 3/4" round bars to make boring bars with. That is the bore size of my tailstock bushing.

Very interesting video Tom. Such a clever and creative idea on the double boring bar. I'm sure your customer will appreciate the hard work. So far we've had mo snow were we live. Great to have a friend like Khaos to keep you company in the workshop. Keep well and warm, both of you. Cheers Nobby

Good job Tom... and Kaos. Yep, it would have been easier on the horizontal boring machine but you nailed it anyway. Pressing the bush in was tough... You could have placed the bush in the snow for an hour to shrink it first, making it easier to press in.

I see you are back to running a kerosene heater. I also noticed a wood burning stove not being used. Have you considered purchasing a Hot Dawg style propane heater and hang it from the ceiling, with a tank outside? I have a 150,000 one that heats my 30x60 with 13 feet high ceilings. Thanks for sharing the video.

I have been using the wood stove. It does a great job of warming up the shop. I use the kerosene heater to take the chill out while the wood stove is getting going.

It sure sounded hard on the mill. My horizontal mill has a 1 1/4 inch boring bar. Do you think that would have worked better? I'm not sure if the table has six inches of travel. I will check that. Good one Tom. Get that horizontal mill working.

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131

Hey there Randy. Yeah it was working my mill harder than I would have liked. Not enough travel on my Y axis for me to do it on my other mill.

I've only seen that doubled up boring bar one other time. I take it the Jet lathe doesn't have enough swing for something like that? At least you have the room for a boring mill, it'll be nice when that is up and running.

    • @hilltopmachineworks2131
      @hilltopmachineworks2131  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hey Greg. Yeah not enough swing room even with the gap removed it was going to hit the ways. Not to mention it probably would have been pretty scary having all that weight to one side of the chuck out of balance.
